A solo walking holiday is a great way to explore a new place on foot and meet new people. Experience the sense of adventure that comes from travelling solo while also potentially making some new friends. You'll get the best of both worlds!
Your experience will be shaped by the location that you choose, and we've certainly got plenty of options for you! We try to pack in lots of sightseeing highlights into all our solo walking holidays, so that you'll come away feeling that you got the most out of your trip.
For example, on our self-guided tour of the Maltese Islands, you'll cover lots of stunning beaches and fishing villages, the UNESCO World Heritage city of Valetta and the medieval citadel in Gozo's capital, Victoria.
And if you go gourmet walking in Burgundy's vineyards and you'll hike through quiet French villages and medieval towns, wine-tasting and lunching as you go along.
Accommodation is typically included in your solo walking holiday. You'll need to check the individual terms of each deal to see how many of your meals are included.
This depends on how much you want to socialise while you're on your holiday.
On a guided solo walking holiday, you will typically be placed in a small group and led by a local guide for the duration of your trip, and you'll have a chance to get to know the other walkers.
On a self-guided walking tour, you'll be given a route to follow along with relevant information, but it will be up to you to get yourself to each point.
If you're going on a solo walking holiday, you'll want to be prepared! If your routes involve hiking up mountainous terrain or if you're going to be in the country at a cooler time of year, don't forget to bring plenty of layers.
For warmer climates, clothing made of lightweight, wicking fabrics is advised. These will draw moisture away from your body and dry quickly. Make sure that you pack sun protection for any parts of your body that will be exposed to the sun - including your face, where the most sensitive skin on the body is located.
Walking boots are a must for all walking travellers. Break in your boots before you travel so that you can enjoy all the sights comfortably. If you'll be walking in a warm climate, choose thinner socks, as your feet are likely to swell slightly. If in any doubt, we recommend that you bring a handy supply of blister plasters, just in case!
If you'll be walking in a remote area, you're likely to need more than one bottle of water! Water purification tablets can come in handy, too, as a backup option.
