Malta is one of the smallest countries in Europe, but don't let that deceive you. With one of our adventure holidays, you'll discover an intriguing land filled with spectacular natural landscapes, uncover millenniums worth of history, and embrace an eclectic and vibrant culture.

With its unique positioning in the Mediterranean Sea, Malta has been a melting pot for European, African and Middle Eastern cultures over the centuries. The country is made up of three islands, of which the largest is Malta. It's home to the small, walled capital city of Valletta while neighbouring Gozo boasts some of the world's oldest free-standing structures. The little island of Comino sits between them but also has its own story to tell.

Malta has enough to fascinate all travellers, but its year-round sunshine means it's the perfect place for a range of activity holidays. Pristine coastlines, ancient historic sites and charming villages make for idyllic backdrops as you venture from place to place at your own pace.

Our adventure holidays in Malta are conveniently arranged, with hand-picked accommodations and expertly crafted itineraries to guide you. But they also give you the freedom to find your own way if you'd prefer. See all our adventures below for an unforgettable holiday in Malta.

What to do on an adventure holiday in Malta?

Malta lends itself to a range of outdoor activities, with diving, climbing and hiking enthusiasts flocking to its islands every year. Our activity holidays focus on self-guided walking tours , giving you the chance to create your own story in gorgeous Malta.

Guided by the Headwater Navigation App, you'll meander through the sun-drenched Maltese islands, taking in all the fascinating sights and unspoilt Mediterranean landscapes on offer. Our adventure holidays allow you to see many of Malta's highlights and hidden secrets, including:

Valletta

Malta's capital city is the smallest in the EU and boasts UNESCO World Heritage status. This gives you a glimpse into how fascinating Valletta is, but you'll have to experience its narrow, cobbled streets, ancient city walls, and Grand Harbour for yourself.

Valletta's history alone makes it worth a visit, with 320 monuments telling the story of life under the rule of the Greeks, Romans, British and many more. Exploring the city on foot is the best way to see everything it has to offer.

Gozo

As unspoilt islands in the Mediterranean go, Gozo has to be high up on the list. At just 14km by 7km and with a plethora of walking routes available, it's the perfect size to explore on foot.

Malta's second largest island has an intriguing blend of spectacular coastal paths and rock formations, sleepy fishing villages filled with character, and remnants of history and prehistoric times. The Inland Sea is a natural seawater pool which offers a stunning spot for a swim.

Gozo is also fantastic for wildlife lovers, with a wide array of flora and fauna on offer.

Megalithic Temples of Malta

Malta is home to seven megalithic temples which are UNESCO World Heritage sites and some of the oldest freestanding stone buildings in the world.

Gozo's most famous attraction is the Ggantija Archaeological Park, home to prehistoric tombs on the Xaghra plateau. These structures were built between c.3600 and c.3200 BC. The megalithic structures on the island of Malta, including Hagar Qim and Mnajdra, are equally as extraordinary and well worth a visit.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to go to Malta?

Malta's location, east of Tunisia and south of Sicily, means it offers some much-needed Mediterranean sunshine almost all year round. Our activity holidays in Malta are available from March to December, so there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy it.

If you're looking to avoid the heat, we would recommend the spring or autumn months. Temperatures should still be pleasant and you'll encounter fewer tourists, but you'll also see the best that Malta's landscapes have to offer. For those looking to enjoy some scorching summer weather, July and August see temperatures consistently around the 32 degrees Celsius mark.

What should I pack for my activity holiday in Malta?

Your packing list for a Malta adventure holiday should reflect the activities you'll be doing and the time of year you're going. If you're looking forward to one of our packages, we'd suggest these essentials:

  • Comfortable and supportive footwear for walking
  • Short and long-sleeve activewear tops
  • Activewear trousers and shorts
  • Small backpack
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Water-resistant, high-SPF sun protection
  • Sun hat and sunglasses
  • Light jacket
  • Portable charging packs

How many days do you need in Malta?

How long you should spend in Malta depends on what you want to see and do. Many stay on the island of Malta itself, which has plenty to offer, but it's certainly worth making some time to explore Gozo and potentially Comino too. We offer 4 and 7-night adventure holidays in Malta, which give you the option of an extended stay to see and do more.

What is the most beautiful part of Malta?

For those who enjoy magnificent cities bustling with culture and history, it's difficult to look past Valletta. Malta's capital is gorgeous from the outside and within. However, some prefer the tranquillity and rural feel of Gozo, with its unspoilt natural scenery and local fishing villages. As one of the smallest countries in Europe, you might be able to see almost everywhere to make your own judgement!

How expensive is it to go to Malta?

Compared to some of Europe's premier destinations, Malta is relatively affordable. Of course, prices may differ depending on where you are and what you're doing, but you can definitely have a memorable trip without breaking the bank. Breakfast and dinner are included in some of our activity holidays in Malta, so you may just find yourself spending a little here and there.
