Set on a high mountain plateau 18km from Lillehammer, Sjusjoen is widely celebrated as one of Europe's finest cross-country ski destinations and is your base for this 7 night holiday self-guided holiday. With pristine snow, expansive views, and an unrivalled trail network stretching for hundreds of kilometres, it is a true winter haven for all levels of cross-country skiers.
Sjusjoen offers the perfect blend of tranquillity, quality, and authentic Norwegian winter atmosphere with traditional log cabins and a magnificent mountain church built in stone and wood. As your trip is self guided, your days are flexible with a local trail map provided to help you choose whether to weave from the snow dusted houses in the village to follow gentle lakeside tours or long, flowing routes across open highlands.
Your base for the week is the Hotel Rustad, a family-run hotel since 1935, now in its 4th generation. Overlooking the frozen Lake Sjusjoen the hotel offers the perfect balance of Scandinavian charm and peaceful mountain comfort with roaring log fires in cosy and intimate sitting rooms. Well-known for its food, guests are treated to a sumptuous buffet breakfast each morning, from which you can also take lunch supplies for a day on the trails. In the evening a 3 course meal is served, showcasing traditional, locally sourced Norwegian food from duck breast served with crispy coleslaw to pork braised in local ale to fried halibut on pumpkin puree.
Visit the on-site ski stall to get kitted out with your boots, poles and skis and to pick up some local knowledge about the best trails and wind down in the evenings with a sauna.
Arrive in Sjusjoen in time for dinner.

Hotel Rustad has been in the Rustad family since 1935 and offers a comfortable, cozy stay. Located 830 metres above sea level on the shore of Lake Sjusjoen the hotel also has a table tennis table, billiard table, two saunas (male and female, open 16:00-18:00), a drying room and a large, modern skiroom.
After collecting your ski equipment and trail map head out to enjoy some of the 350km of groomed trails. Each day brings something different; follow a loop around Lake Sjusjoen or head through the trees out of the village to the east and then along the base of the three dominating peaks of the region; the Snerrvillen, Moste and Sollen. To the west is the old village of Nordseter with some of the trails having unforgettable views of the high plateau above the Gudbrandsdalen Valley and the Rondane and Jotunheimen peaks in the distance. As you glide along the trails lookout for animal tracks (fox, elk and reindeer).
For a change of scenery visit the nearby Olympic town of Lillehammer which is easily reached by bus, or for the more adventurous ski there and take the bus back.
If you would like any tuition, private cross-country skiing lessons with a local ski school are also available. We'd recommend booking these in advance directly with the ski school.
Take the train back to Oslo.

The Hotel Cecil is a modern 3 star hotel situated next to the parliament and is in an ideal location for exploring the city centre. All rooms are light and airy with full en-suite facilities. They also come equipped with direct dial telephone, cable television and air-conditioning. Breakfast is buffet style and there is a selection of restaurants within walking distance for your evening meal.
