Self guided cycling holidays

Self guided cycling

On an independent cycling holiday you're free to explore at your own pace. So, whether it's a long lazy lunch or a visit to an ancient chateau, the choice is yours! To help you find your way from A to B we provide detailed maps and our own comprehensive route notes and, to help you choose a cycling holiday that best suits your level of fitness our cycling holidays are graded using our bike rating system.

Self guided cycling holidays

You move between hotels typically every two days, using our detailed maps and comprehensive route notes as your guide. You cycle at your own pace and have plenty of opportunities for detours to places of interest en-route. While you're cycling from hotel-to-hotel our free bag moving service takes care of your luggage - simply leave your bags packed in the morning and they'll be waiting for you at your next hotel at the end of the afternoon. In between your cycling days you've time to explore the local area - we provide lots of ideas in your notes booklet - or maybe just unwind by the pool!

The cycling briefing

Before you set off on your first day our staff meet you and fit you out with a bikes sized specially to suit you. They'll also go through the route notes with you to point out any last minute alterations and to provide advice on things to do and places to visit. Each of our bikes is equipped with a puncture repair kit and the cycling briefing includes a practical demonstration in case you're unlucky enough to get a flat.

Our top quality bikes

We believe our bikes to be the best on the market. They feature straight handlebars and a gel saddle for a comfortable riding position. 21-speed Shimano gears, quick indexed gearshift and a lightweight frame make it easier on those hilly sections - and strong V-brakes take care of the downhill freewheel! Each is fitted with large panniers for picnics, sun cream etc. and we've also fitted a handlebar map holder for your maps or route notes.

As our staff spend 40 minutes cleaning and checking every Headwater bike before they are used on our cycling holidays, and because they provide a briefing at the start of the tour, we don't expect many problems. If however anything does go wrong, our friendly and experienced staff will come out to your hotel and put it right.

E-bike options

We now offer E-bikes as an option on many of our holidays. They provide all the benefits of a normal bike - gentle exercise, fresh open air, no experience needed, interaction with nature and other cyclists - PLUS they have the added bonus of making light work of longer rides with the occasional climb and uphill section! They are the perfect solution for people wanting to share holiday experiences, but who don't necessarily share the same levels of fitness.

The Headwater wine service

Over the years, many of our customers have told us stories of beautiful vineyards in lush valleys which produce exquisite wines. Having sampled the wines on offer they are then faced with the problem of how to get their favourite bottles (or cases) to the next hotel if they're cycling! That's not a problem for Headwater guests as we provide a free wine pick-up service in many of our regions (shown on the individual holiday pages). You simply order as much wine as you want and our rep will pick it up and take it to your final destination ready for you to take home at the end of your holiday.
