The exquisite Dalmatian Islands lie just off the Croatian coastline, resting atop the inviting waters of the Mediterranean Sea. These unique islands offer those who visit a diverse experience with pockets of discovery to relish in, whilst the coastal air supplies a fresh breeze to compliment the blissful Croatian sun, perfect for walking! We feature the islands of Brač and Hvar, renowned for their relaxed ambience, fantastic local cuisine and wine, intriguing historic cities and towns, and some of the most scenically dramatic walking in Europe. These Dalmatian Islands are the picture-perfect destination for a keen walker searching for spectacular natural beauty.
Your journey begins in the exuberant city of Split, known for mastering the ideal balance between tradition and modernity. Founded by the Romans, Split's famous UNESCO Diocletian's Palace was once the Emperor's retirement home. Today its warren of narrow alleys houses the town's cathedral, while its cavernous cellars are used as art galleries. A scenic ferry journey brings you to your first Dalmatian Island, Brač encompassing an extensive and fascinating history which provides an excellent window into authentic Croatian Island life.
Another beautiful ferry crossing brings you to your second Dalmatian Island, Hvar, where vast vineyards, olive groves and lavender fields are abundant. There are copious amounts of interesting museums, castles and Roman remains to explore on your journey as well as many swimming opportunities in the incredible clear blue sea. The last of your ferry rides brings you back to Split where you may wish to add extra nights to truly appreciate the culture and architecture of this exciting city, where enticing fresh seafood and local wines can be found around every corner.
We have included three nights in Split and four nights in Hvar, allowing plenty of time to explore the history and nature at your own pace.
The route is mostly along tracks or rural roads; sometimes on paths (some can be rocky due to characteristic limestone). Paths are generally easy to follow and sometimes waymarked and/or signposted however this is variable.
Arrive in Split
You stay at Residence Stine.
Located in the heart of Split, near the beach and in an area with good shopping. Gregory of Nin Statue and Cathedral of Saint Domnius are notable landmarks, and the area's natural beauty can be seen at Bacvice Beach and Split Riva. Croatian Maritime Museum and Natural History Museum are also worth visiting. The rooms are spacious with pleasantly furnished interior.
This varied circular walk takes you into the hills south of Supetar to walk through olive groves and for views back to Split. Then following the coastline there are several swimming opportunities to enjoy in the vivid clear blue water as you make your way back to the lovely town of Supetar, before the ferry back to Split.
An early morning ferry takes you to Hvar where you spend the next four nights. From Hvar Town walk up to the so-called Napoleon Fortress, now an astronomical observatory of the University of Zagreb. Here you'll have a great view over Hvar and beyond. From here walk through olive groves and vineyards to return to Hvar town.
You stay at Villa Nora.
Hotel Villa Nora Hvar is a new hotel situated in the middle of Hvar old town. The ancient Palace, built in the XIV century, once the rich and magnificent residence of the aristocratic family Gazzari, has been now completely restored as the elegant and refined Hotel Villa Nora, one of the most beautiful in Dalmatia. The rooms are modern and elegant.
Take a water taxi (payable locally) to the largest of the Pakleni islands, Sveti Klement and follow a shady, rocky path to the hamlet of Vlaka. There are plenty of coves and beaches to stop at today before taking the water taxi back to Hvar.
Today your walk takes you through the hills where you will see olive groves and lavender fields to the abandoned village of Malo Grablje. The route back down takes you to Milna, on the coast, where you can stop for a swim before following an inland route through vineyards back to Hvar town.
Take the bus to Stari Grad to enjoy a circular walk of two halves. Firstly, you walk through olive groves, vineyards and villages in the hills south of the plain, and secondly through the famous cultivated land on the Stari Grad plain. This area was laid out by the Greeks in the 4th century BC and has been in continuous use for growing olives and vines ever since. Interpretive panels along the way provide information. If possible, we suggest you allow yourself some time to explore Stari Grad, which translates as 'Old City' before taking the bus back to Hvar town.
Take the morning ferry back to Split, spend time exploring the city and visiting the Diocletian Palace, and take a walk around Marjan Park, a wooded headland with magnificent views.
Leave Split.
