From here we enjoy an excellent choice of routes with the opportunity to relax in comfort at the end of a day's walking. During the week, we venture into the Fanes-Sennes and Dolomiti di Sesto National Parks for great views of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Historically the front line between Italy and Austria-Hungary during the First World War, the trails take us through incredible open-air museums.

Day 1: Start Villabassa.

Start at the Hotel Adler in Villabassa. The leader will give a short briefing to give an overview of the week ahead and give you any useful information.

Day 2: Walk to the beautiful Lago di Braies (level 3 weeks)

The ideal start to visiting this vast area is a walk straight from the hotel through the very pretty, flower-filled Braies Valley. We walk through small villages and farmland until we reach the magnificent Lago di Braies, one of the 297 glacial lakes in the area. It is certainly one of the most beautiful thanks to being surrounded by jagged peaks that are reflected in the extraordinary mirror-like surface of the lake. We follow the route of 'SS hostages', the leaders of 19 countries who were freed after the First World War by the inhabitants of Villabassa.

Approx. distance 14km, 650m ascent, 255m descent.

Day 3: Walk from the Kreutzberg Pass to the Nemes Alm (level 3 weeks)

Today we explore high pastures and ridges along the Austrian border. We walk steadily exploring the meadows under the ridge of Knieberg. We have great views towards the Rotwand and Monte Popera. Later afternoon we visit Alpe Nemes hut where we could enjoy a drink and a home made apple strudel.

Approx distance 14-16km. 6-700m ascent, 6-700m descent.

Day 4: Walk amongst beautiful wildflowers during the climb up towards Strudelkopf (level 3 weeks)

We start the walk at 2000m altitude walking amongst beautiful wildflowers and ascends to the summit of Strudlekopf (2307m). We stop at the Durrenstein hut in the early afternoon to check the local Kaiserschmarren speciality. On a clear day, from the summit, we can enjoy views of the Tre Cime, Monte Piana and Monte Cristallo.Approx. distance 15km. 500m ascent, 1000m descent.

Day 5: A free day to relax or enjoy optional activities such as self-guided cycling or visit one of the local museums.

A free day to relax in the hotel's wellness centre or take a self-guided cycle ride around this wonderful area. Alternatively, you can make your way to Bolzano to visit a museum dedicated to Oetzi, the 5000 year-old 'iceman' whose remarkably well-preserved body was found in 1991 high on a glacier on the Austro-Italian frontier. Or you could journey to the attractive provincial capital of Lienz in Austria; or closer to the cosy town of Brunico.

Day 6: A memorable circuit around the famous 'three chimneys', Tre Cime di Lavaredo (level 3 weeks)

We enjoy a memorable walk under the famous 'Three Chimneys', or Tre Cime di Lavaredo (or Drei Zinnen in German). Set amid one of the classic mountain groups of this area, our walk around these impressive peaks is certainly a highlight of the week.

Approx distance 18km, 550m ascent, 1100 descent.

Day 7: Monte Piano (level 3 weeks)

To complete the week, we take the amazing estern approach route up Monte Piana. After 600m ascent we find ourselves upon the flat-topped mountain surrounded by some of the most impressive scenery in the Dolomites. It is the site of an open-air museum dedicated to the First World War where trenches, dugouts and shell craters can be seen amongst the many alpine flowers. On our return, we have time to spot the brilliant blue gentians, alpine white edelweiss and bright saffron that create a beautiful scene around Lake Misurina, thanks to the beautiful pink of the limestone rock.

Approx distance 15km, 700m ascent, 800m descent.

Day 8: End Villabassa.

End Villabassa.

Reviews

Here at Headwater we thrive on feedback from our customers. It's the only way we can continue to develop, and where necessary improve, our services and ensure our holidays continue to be the best they can be. As this is a relatively new holiday, we don't yet have any customer reviews available from our customers, but here are the comments that have been received from previous Exodus travellers.

What a great opportunity to escape the C-19 situation in UK & experience the stupendous Dolomites. The Exodus office staff were helpful and supportive in advising what trek was suitable within certain countries, within the time ‘window’ I had, given the different country restrictions.

Wow! Thank you for being consistently brilliant! This is my 4th Exodus trip, and it did not disappoint. From the start, the Hotel Adler was a great base with great food and facilities ( you can never really go wrong with Italian food, and the Austrian influence added nicely to the mix). We had a brilliant guide with Karl, who is not only fun to be around, but very well informed about many things, in an area that is not just a beautiful mountain range, but a WW1 battlefield and part time filmset (think Cliffhanger). I've been very fortunate to go to a number of mountain ranges around the world, including Alaska Range, Himalayas and the Andes - however the Dolomites hold their own and are right up there with the very best. Despite all that has happenned around the world with Covid this year, it's great to know that travel is still travel and that we can still visit these places. Do not change the formula - every day hiking got better and better!

This trip was inspirational. The scenery, the challenge and the group combined to make this one of the top trips provided by Exodus. Our leader was excellent. His knowledge, storytelling and ability to read the group was outstanding. It was an extremely diverse group but the leader pulled it all together admirably. I would highly recommend this trip.

We altogether delighted in the entire Dolomites experience. The staff were well disposed and productive. Food was in every case crisp and tempting. We were additionally satisfied with the way that we could make up and back our very own snacks from the morning meal buffet.

Having wanted to hike in the Dolomites for some years, I finally made a point of doing so, and it didn’t fail to impress. If you have an appreciation for spectacular mountain scenery and beautiful lakes, you won’t be disappointed. And when you couple this with exploring fascinating tunnels and trenches dating back to the First World War, explained by the knowledgable tour leader, together with stops to indulge in local delicacies such as apple strudel and kaiserschmarrn and the great hotel accommodation, it all adds up to a fantastic week.

A wonderful trip which exceeded our expectations. Although very day was different, each days walk was better than the day before. The TreCime walk was probably the best day hike of my life! Our guide Karl was a mine of information about the interesting history of the area this greatly added to our experience. I have no hesitation in thoroughly recommending this trip.

If you're looking for an expertly organized trip guaranteeing you laughter, new friendships and adventure, you simply MUST choose this trip to the Dolomites. Unbelievably, each day is better than the last. Your week will be filled with super fun hikes, spectacular scenery and lots of cultural experiences.

A blissful week of exhilarating trekking and comfortable lodging. The trees were of very reasonable length and level of difficulty. Every trek offered a different type of trek, terrain and views of the Dolomites. From finding am azure blue lake, to rolling hills of wild flowers, to wooded paths to raw limestone. Every day better than the previous. The hotel was stunning and very comfortable offering a plethora of food for all tastes and appetites. The quiet town allowed for a true escape and the opportunity to cycle on your free day.

Great leader, Liz Proctor, fabulous walks in great scenery. Good hotel with great food.

This was my first time to do a group travel 'adventure' and this Exodus trip exceeded my expectations. It was superb in every detail-the daily hikes were truly phenomenal; our leader had a wealth of outdoor and guiding experience, and shared many interesting hiking and history tidbits; our hotel was exceptional-staff, meals, extras -all such a treat! I can't wait to plan my next Exodus adventure!

Exodus provided a very well planned and executed trip. Communication with Exodus prior to the trip was easy, and they were very good about answering questions. The guide, Alex, was excellent. He was very well informed about the geological and historical history of Northern Italy, and he was eager to share this history with us. Alex would be an excellent professor! He always let us know what the next day's hike would be like, and he would describe the hikes by his estimated degree of 'spiciness' (one pepper, two peppers, etc.). The Hotel Adler was the perfect place to stay for the week. The Adler is family owned and staffed, as it has been for over 50 years. They were very friendly, warm and welcoming, and couldn't have been more helpful. The food was delicious and plentiful, and the menu varied every night. The small dining room staff of 3 or 4, were there for every meal, and were very friendly, helpful, and efficient. Of the 16 people on this trip, all but 3 or 4 of us had traveled with Exodus before multiple times. Not only was this trip very well planned, organized, and executed, it was also an extremely good value at half of the price of other companies we looked at for a similar itinerary. I will definitely travel with Exodus again.

We thoroughly enjoyed the whole Dolomites experience. We selected the challenging week and found that it was just the right level for us. The treks took us to different mountain peaks and we were always rewarded with the most fantastic breathtaking views. Alex our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. Hotel Adler was centrally located with shops, bars and cafes nearby. The staff were friendly and efficient. Food was always fresh and appetising. We were also very pleased with the fact that we could make up and back our own lunches from the breakfast buffet. We would recommend this trip for views and excellent value for money.

This was my first time travelling with Exodus, and will definitely travel with them again. It was really nice to stay in one hotel for the week. I loved not having to pack and unpack, and I don't think we missed anything by not moving to various locations throughout the trip. (If we did, we wouldn't know it- the trip was everything I expected.) The Dolomites were amazing!! The hikes were challenging, and it was nice to come back to the hotel for a shower and great dinner. Our guide was wonderful. I've been on hiking trips for years, and this was the first time I've had a guide give short lessons on how to hike over certain terrain.

I went away with a friend last week and we had an amazing trip with 15 other people in our group. Our leader Alex is a real credit to Exodus Travel, he was extremely approachable, helpful and knowledgeable and made our trip incredibly enjoyable across the entire week. The scenery and walks were all spectacular and every day very varied. The hotel we stayed in was also very good and the food extremely yummy.

It was a good holiday with an excellent guide (we came across Alex before in 2012 in Corsica) who shares his enthusiasm and knowledge of and for so many things. The group was large (16) but a good mixed bunch of people who gelled well. The walking varied and scenery stunning. The hotel was good however more choice at dinner for those of us who do not eat meat would be good - I did find myself eating the same thing several times/ having pasta for more than one course/ skipping a course (although I am sure the latter did me good!!). Breakfast was superb and being able to make our own lunch very helpful.

A week of exciting walking in the Dolomite mountains, technically in Italy but very much Austrian in character. Villabassa/Niederdorf was an excellent base to explore the South Tyrol. Check out my 2-minute video of the trip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Drm5Iqb9CVM [1] [1] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Drm5Iqb9CVM

An excellent week of good weather, good walking, excellent guiding and excellent company.

Late June was a brilliant time to go to the Dolomites. We had variable weather, but plenty of sun to admire the spectacular mountains. This was my first 'walking holiday', and exactly what I hoped it would be. The main draw was the mountain scenery, but I also enjoyed the hotel and its food service, which offered plenty of variety. There were 16 in our group, which meant the supper service dragged on quite long, but everyone was friendly and completed all the hikes.

The Dolomites, are stunning, at every step was a new spectacular view. The walking was challenging and rewarding. Hotel Adler was fabulous the hospitality absolutely splendid.

The walks were well chosen, giving us a good mix of the mountain ascents and panoramic views. I believe the leader provided good guidance on the walks however the largeness of the group and variable fitness of group members meant there were challenges for the leader keeping to the necessary timetable to meet connecting bus transfers etc. While generally the hotel was of a good standard, the formal set menus had restrictive choice and often had too many courses (up to 5). White table cloths and waiting staff in dinner suits seemed far too formal for a walking tour. Also waiting staff were run off their feet and worked extraordinaryly long hours. The evening where we ordered our meals provided the best meal of the stay. That said, every effort was made by staff to serve us as best they could. I also wish to highly commend the hotel staff for assisting with resolving a medical problem my partner suffered from in the early part of the week.

This was one of the best walking trips I have ever been on. This was the opinion of all on our trip and many were highly experienced walkers who had traveled the world. In terms of location it is hard to beat. Combine the stunning scenery on each walk with the excellent hotel, food, wines and facilities and this makes for a first class week.

Excellent trip, superb walks, stunning views. Hotel staff very friendly and welcoming and hotel fun and quirky.

This was the first Exodus trip i'd been on and it was my first solo trip. I had a brilliant time and felt well supported throughout the trip. Everything was organised for us, so all I had to do was to enjoy myself! The hotel is wonderful, with excellent food and a wonderful pool. I treated myself to a massage on the rest day which was excellent. The walks were absolutely phenomenal, every single day was different, some days we were climbing peaks, the next we were skirting ridges and the next exploring WW2 trenches! I literally savored every minute.

This was my first Exodus holiday and first trip on my own, so i didn't know what to expect. I need not have worried. the trip was absolutely first class five star. the Group leader was a real character, very knowledgeable about the area, the walks were very cleverly thought out and the views were spectacular. The Hotel Adler was very welcoming and the staff were very helpful, the food was delicious. and catered for vegetarians and food sensitivities.

This was a moderate walking holiday in the Dolomites, with Premium accommodation. The trip certainly lived up to its expectations - which, with Exodus, are always high! Fabulous walking that got more challenging and more rewarding as the week went on, great group, excellent leader and wonderful accommodation.

Great trip. Opportunity for two walks each day. I only did level 5 which were varied heights and terrain. Awesome views. Guide changed itinerary when we were hit with early snow. Beautiful views each day. Four seasons in one week!

We chose a grade 5 challenging week and it did not disappoint. This part of the Dolomites is incredibly beautiful, Tre Cime is one of the most beautiful places we have walked and we felt part of the landscape, almost swallowed by it's beauty and grandeur. Each day of walking brought something different and each was wonderful. Returning to the Hotel Adler each day made the trip very special as the facilities, the food, the accommodation and the staff are simply superb.

An excellent week of walking in the dolomites expertly led by Alex. Very comfortable hotel with wonderful food. Breakfasts and evening meals were all very good. The weather was cool and damp at times but Alex chose excellent routes to follow and the free day cycling to Bruneck was very good.

A great week away walking in the dolomites, weather was perfect.

This was my first European walking holiday and I was very impressed with the quality of the whole holiday from the Hotel Adler and its staff who were very accommodating to our guide Alex and also the team at the office. I did wonder about food on holiday as I am a picky eater but all the food provided was delicious and more than enough. There is nothing I could fault on this holiday even with rain for 2.5 days of our walks we managed to do all but the last day of the planned routes and in my opinion it added a chance to see the Dolomites in a dramatic scene as well as glorious sunshine.

An excellent trip which I would highly recommend to other walkers. Each day's walk takes you to a different part of the Dolomites to explore and enjoy. Alex, our group leader, had very good knowledge of the area and could adapt our walks based on the weather conditions and was able to share his historical information with us. The hotel, Hotel Alder, in Villabassa, was a treat to come home to every night - the food was superb and the staff were very friendly. There were 12 of us in the group and we all got on very well indeed which made for a very good week.

The Dolomites are spectacular. I did the moderate week and found it accurately rated and described. The Hotel Adler was just the cream on the cake with friendly staff, a good bar and outdoor seating area and really, really good meals.

A great week walking, seeing both lakes and peaks with fabulous views.

Alex our guide knew the area so well that he was able to make daily route adjustments to suit weather and ability. Above and beyond the call of duty. As usual the group was a great mix of personalitys. The landscape was truly exceptional. Don't forget your waterproof clothing though.

This was a great trip...Lots of physical activity that yielded great views. Food included with trip price was very good...and when you asked nicely, you were able to order items not on the group menu. Hotel Adler deserves it's 4 star rating. Good location and loved the wellness center. At the end of a day of hiking the steam rooms were most welcoming...Not to mention the comfort of the bar. Our room had a terrace so it was possible to sit outside of our room as well as hang our wet items out to dry...As it did rain and we did do wash. Chose this date because it fit with my touring in Slovenia as part of the same vacation. Thought it would also provide the best hiking weather...We had bright sun the first day, a couple days later it rained and the next day it snowed and then it was sunny again. What a special trip. I have taken several trips with Exodus and this is one of the best for hiking during the day and comfort after the hike. Plus it starts and ends in Venice which makes it easy to extend one's stay in Italy.

Great walking, great views, great location, great guide, great people. So putting that all together, it was a great holiday.

Excellent, good value trip. I had not visited South Tyrol before but the Dolomites had been on my bucket list for some time. I booked the regular trip not the more challenging departure but the walking was just right leaving at 9am and back to the hotel 5-6pm. I had looked at doing hut to hut treks but the real highlight was coming back to a base at Hotel Adler, using the pool and spa and loading up on local, delicious five course meals! Maybe less adventurous but an active holiday with maximum relaxation too.

A fantastic holiday,great location.Scenery was stunning.Hotel great,nice staff,very helpful.

great hotel, great walking and great food, what more could you want !

Just back from a very pleasant week trundling around the Dolomites. Bit of huff and puff especially in the heat of summer but without too much terrifying exposure. The awesome scenery and beautiful summer widlflowers were intoxicating. Hotel Adler was great as was it's spa facilities especially the refershing mint shower, the food was delicious, plentiful and beautifully presented and the bar was raided with great enthusiasm every night!

Excellent trip, beautiful views, lovely hotel with great facilities and last but not least a superb group leader

Fabulous holiday with spectacular vistas every day, just the right side of challenging with the added luxury of returning to the hotel to partake of the spa facilities before settling down to the 5 course dinner. Learnt so much about the area and its history from the very friendly and knowledgable guide. Each days walking gave a new prepective of the area with differing terrain and amazing views. The hotel was excellent with good facilities and very friendly helful staff nothing was too much trouble would definately reccomend the trip to anyone who enjoys the great outdoors and a little luxury

I did a C grade trip in september and spent an amazing week in the mountains under blue skies and sunshine. The views from the peaks were amazing, such incredible scenery! Really enjoyed all the walks which just got better each day. They were just the right side of challenging for me. If you've done the Slovenia Lakes and Mountains trip you will love this. The hotel was a really good family run one with friendly and helpful staff. Loads of choice for breakfast and 5 course dinners in the evenings. Also sauna, steam room, swimming pool and other facilities to use. .

5 days fantastic hiking in the Dolomites. You can have an idealistic view that the area is beautiful and yes this trip lived fully up to expectations.

A superb walking holiday with the benefit of staying at one hotel for the week. Couldn't fault the hotel:- room, food and pool, spa area were excellent and staff so friendly. Wonderful scenery, great walking and good bus / train links for free day all made this the best walking holiday I have done.

I so enjoyed the snowshoeing trip in February that I decided to revisit during a different season. This time I was travelling solo so I was slightly apprehensive as this was my first complete holiday on my own. I didn't need to worry though because as soon as I was met at the airport by the group leader I felt completely 'looked' after. The whole trip was very well organised with all walks being aimed at the overall physical ability of the group with additional walks offered for those who wished to exert themselves further. The views were spectacular - no words can really describe it, you need to visit for yourself.

A stunning part of Europe with really varied walking.

This was our first Exodus trip. It turned out to be even better than we expected. The scenery and was fantastic, the hotel was superb and the group was wonderful company. We definitely want to go an more Exodus trips.

Totally Awe inspiring. You get right into the heart of the mountains.

If it says not for those 'suffering vertigo' believe it. It means sheer drops, little protection and scree underfoot!

Beautiful place,  more Austrian/German than you expect of an Italian countryside.  Hotel was excellent, very friendly.  Would recommend both the hotel and countryside.

Just back from a very enjoyable week in the Dolomites.   Using Villabassa as a base was clever not only because of its location but also for the comfortable and well run Hotel Adler.    I  have been on other exodus trips and I have to say that it keeps getting better and better.  A Big Thanks to Carl our excellent leader and to Christian and Helene Pircher and staff at the Adler -purveyors of  everything that is good about Sudtirol.

A fab walking holiday, in a great hotel and with the added bonus of a lot of military history 'in them hills'!

A place to recommend!  Stunning scenery, a fantastic hotel with excellent food and facilities and the walking did not disappoint.

This particular trek provided a good balance between adventure and historical relevance. The physical setting is fabulous and the village atmosphere of Villabassa delightful.

Overall, an excellent trip. Highly recommended.

A brilliant way to spend a weeks annual leave, amazing scenery, fantastic food (and drink) and good company

Great friendly hotel, super but not too demanding walks in great mountain country led by a knowledable and competant guide with a sense of humour.  Pity it only lasted a week!

The scenery was even more spectacular than we expected. Villabassa is a good base with every amenity on the doorstep. It is a very picturesque and friendly town.

This walking tour surpassed all my expectations.  Apart from the spectacular scenery of the area, the whole trip was professionally arranged and caried out.  Our leader, Karl, was just brilliant and really made it for us all.  I would rate this trip as right up there and would love to see it all again in snow!  Thanks guys :)The hotel was second to none

Stunning scenery, a distinct Tyrolean ambience - picture wildflower meadows a la "sound of music", pretty churches, craggy tops.  Hotel : comfortable and quirky, fantastic cuisine.

Really enjoyable week in the Dolomites.  Nice hotel (ok rooms, lovely pool and spa, superb food and wine), great company and walking (C-grade week) that ranged from above average to outstanding.

Villabassa is situated in a most beautiful valley in the Dolomites. In early June the flowing streams, the spring flowers  butterflies and insects completed the picture witih the snow topped peaks

A totally enjoyable week in the Dolomites with great company and a simply fantastic leader!

awesome scenery , fantastic weather , everything went according to plan and exodus did what it said on the tin ... all I had to do was relax , walk and soak up the scenery .. which I did !Then there was the beatiful quirky spa and pool ... just hit the spot after a long days walk.

Excellent range of walks in a short period of time gives a taster for more and we are likely to return to the Dolomites. Good hotel accommodation with excellent variety of food and facilities.

The trip was brilliant - non-stop action from morning til night with not one drop of rain.  The hotel was excellent - fantastic breakfasts, picnic lunches and four course evening meals - even though it was opposite the church whose bells struck EVERY quarter, half and full hour ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT! We managed to drag ourselves to the wellness centre - pool, steam room, sauna, herbal shower - 3 of the nights in preference to having a pre-dinner beer in the bar.

- Location : Beautiful, magnificient views during the walk.
