Imagine a mountain landscape that beckons to outdoor enthusiasts, a place where the crisp alpine air mingles with the warmth of unmatched hospitality. Here, in villages like Neustift im Stubaital, encased by pine forested slopes, nature lovers find their haven. The village, one of the Tyrol's most picturesque, offers exceptional walking trails and a fantastic network of public transport, ensuring easy-going walks without compromising on breathtaking views.

Your adventure includes a visit to the majestic Stubai Glacier, fondly called the 'Top of Tyrol' at 3,210m. From here, gaze upon commanding views of the Italian Dolomites and beyond, a sight that captures the essence of Alpine grandeur. With the included 'Stubai Super Card', embark on explorations-whether it's wandering the historic streets of Innsbruck with its Gothic and Baroque architecture or savouring local delights.

Speaking of delights, Tyrolean cuisine is a treat for the senses. Indulge in Buchteln, soft buns filled with sweet jams or curds, embodying the heartiness of Austrian baking. Try Fiakergulasch, a savoury delight made of diced beef in a rich sauce, a culinary adventure that tantalises taste buds. Finish your day with a sip of traditional Marillenschnaps, a fruit brandy distilled from apricots, a delightful endnote to your culinary journey.

Your stay is a blend of comfort and tranquillity. Nestled amidst nature, your 4* hotel in Neustift offers a retreat just minutes away from the village centre. Explore the Stubai Alps with ease, thanks to nearby bus stops and cable car stations. After your daily walk, indulge in the hotel's panoramic pool, outdoor jacuzzi, and natural bathing pond. Rejuvenate in the sauna and relish delectable Tyrolean cuisine at the exceptional hotel restaurant.

Day 2: Elfer Bergstation Circular (12km/7.5mi)

Begin your day with a cable car up to Elfer Mountain where you’ll find the biggest sundial sculpture of the European Alps. Encircled by a two-metre-wide footbridge, this is a spectacular viewing platform where you can enjoy panoramic views of the Stubai Valley. From here, the trail leads to Autenalm farm where you’ll have the option to detour to Zindegg summit – the views are worth the climb! Continue with wonderful scenes of the imposing Elfer massif as you descend to Pinnistal before returning to Elfer Mountain.

Day 3: Scenic Nature Walk - Kartnall (6km/3.7mi)

This gentle walk begins in Neustift and leads to Kartnall where in the 13th century, farmers deemed this a profitable 'quarter' of land. To this day, the cows, sheep, and goats keep the family farms alive with their milk producing butter, grey cheese, and curd cheese. With benches dotted along the trail, there's plenty of places to enjoy the valley views and mountains above. Return to Neustift following the Ruetz river.

Day 4: Stubai Glacier Trail (2km/1.2mi)

Take the bus from Neustift to Mutterbergalm (30mins), then the cable car to Eisgrat for your visit to Stubai Glacier. Fondly known as the 'Top of Tyrol' at 3,210m, Stubai Glacier is well worth a visit with its commanding views of the Italian Dolomites and beyond. Hike across the glacier, stopping at Austria's highest mountain restaurant with breath-taking mountain views ever present. The summit platform protrudes nine metres beyond the cliff edge, regarded as one of the most beautiful viewing platforms in the world.

elevation

Day 5: Scenic Nature Walk - Gratzengrubel (15km/9.3mi)

Beginning at Elfer Mountain cable car station, you’ll steadily climb to Elferhutte Restaurant with spectacular views over to Elferspitze. On one side of the mountain, the rugged and bright rock limestone towers on the Serles ridge offer a unique contrast to the prehistoric rock of the Stubai mountains on the other side. Fantastic panoramic views accompany you past mountain huts and small eateries before your final descent into Neustift.

elevation

Day 6: Elfer - One of the Seven Summits (8km/5.0mi)

Take a cable car from Neustift up to Elferhutte before embarking on this fantastic walk. Every day at 11am, the sun lights up the back of Elferspitze (translates as “Eleven Peak”), shining in its spotlight from Neustift. Thereafter, you must walk up the Elfer to capture all its beauty. With impressive rocky towers and spikes, these blunt Dolomite rocks are certainly reminiscent of the Dolomites as they stand proud commanding all the attention. The summit cross at the eastern Elfer tower stands at 2,499m whereas the highest point, known as Elferkofel, sits humbly at 2,505m.

elevation

Day 7: Alpine Pastures in Schlick 2000 (8km/5.0mi)

Start at the Schlick 2000 cable car station with a lovely restaurant and viewing platform. This gentle walk takes you along forest trails to Schlickerlalm Hutte, surrounded by fine panoramas. Continue to the beautiful Panoramasee Lake embedded in fantastic alpine scenery. This is a great spot to relax on the loungers before returning to the cable car station.

Day 8: Depart Neustift

REVIEWS

This is an excellent holiday with varied walking. All the walks are easily accessible from the hotel. Local hospitality is impressive.

David Atkins, 20 Jul 2024

Neustift is a lovely village in a beautiful setting. The Hotel Alpeiner is one of the best we have stayed in on a Headwater holiday. We had single rooms but they were 'normal' doubles, not the smallest rooms. The rooms were very good. The outdoor pool is great and we used it most days. Hotel staff were friendly and helpful.

This was a lovely holiday, our only caveat being that we found one of the walks more difficult than Headwater's instructions suggested, the Elfer Summit walk. In addition, the walk which Headwater suggests at the Stubai Glacier is closed and it doesn't appear on the local walking trail maps. The Ice Cave there is also permanently closed. The Glacier is still very well worth the trip, especially the 'Top of the Tyrol' viewpoint and the short walk to the chapel up at the same level. We'd recommend reading the information pack supplied by the hotel as there are other very enjoyable walks in that, particularly Stage 1 of the Wilder Wasser Weg. We had a great week.

Overall another very good experience, thank you.

John Lambert, 18 Jun 2024

Everyone was very helpful throughout the whole process of deciding on the trip, answering my endless list of questions, completing the booking, providing updates and information between time of booking and act trip

Elizabeth Spencer, 8 Jun 2024

Our holiday in the Stubai valley was excellent. There were plenty of amazing walks to do and the hotel itself was first class. While it didn’t affect the enjoyment of the holiday, we didn’t find the Headwater app useful and didn’t think the itinerary offered by Headwater was necessarily the best one. However, the hotel offered many amazing trips and information which more than compensated for this

Cecilia Walker, 4 Jun 2024

Overall, an enjoyable experience. This was my first walking holiday, and i will certainly do more in the future.

Michael Morton, 4 Jun 2024

Really impressed with Headwater. Great holiday in Austria and discovered a new holiday destination that we would return to. Thank you.

Stuart Pettet, 12 Sep 2023

Had the pleasure of dealing with very friendly and informative members of the Headwater team who were always able

to offer expert advice and answer queries immediately .

David Edwards, 9 Sep 2023

It was a great holiday, the app was useful but the itinerary was too difficult for us. The general info was ok. We used the trail information at the resorts and used their leaflets instead as it suggested a choice of trails and the grading instead of one trail only. We loved the resort and the hotel but not the room. Would recommend the area to friends.

Lisa Mackay, 12 Aug 2023

An outstanding hotel in a great setting, with easy access to the mountains and the Stubai Valley
