TRIP DETAILS

Set on an archipelago of fourteen islands, connected by 53 bridges, Stockholm is aptly nicknamed 'Venice of the North'. Wherever you look you are bound to find water. Over the summer months it rarely gets dark during the nights, and the weather is pleasantly warm.

During this single centred bike tour you head out each day from your base to experience the Swedish capital city and explore its beautiful archipelago. Discover World Cultural Heritage, nature, a broad variety of museums and culinary highlights with visits to Vaxholm, Drottningholm Palace, Saltsjobaden and Djurgarden.

ITINERARY

TERRAIN

You cycle mostly on bike paths and gravel roads as well as forest tracks and side roads with less traffic through typical Swedish nature. To some extent there are simpler trail conditions with raw gravel. Flat to slightly hilly tour course.

Day 1: Arrive in Stockholm

Take a first stroll through Sweden's capital and explore some of the many sights and tourist attractions.

In the evening you will get your bike.

Hotel Birger Jarl is a hotel in Vasastan with 271 modern rooms and suites, including a gym and other amenities. Their comfortable rooms have private bathrooms, equipped with shower or bathtub. Day 2: Drottningholm Palace (52km/32.3mi)

Along Lake Malar, Sweden's third largest lake you cycle to UNESCO world cultural heritage Drottningholm Palace. Here, on the shore of the lake, the royal family grew up. Take your time to explore the beautiful palace as well as the Chinese Pavilion dating from the 18th century. You continue your tour across bridges on to the island of Sodermalm. You also pass the old town of Stockholm, Gamla Stan with its cobblestone alleys and inviting coffee shops and the island of Skeppsholmen with an impressive modern art sculpture garden.

Day 3: Vaxholm (26km/16.2mi or 46km/28.6mi)

A stay in Stockholm should include a visit to the archipelago. Therefore today's bike tour brings you to Vaxholm, the idyllic small town which is also known as 'capital of the archipelago'. Look forward to nice restaurants, small shops, an impressive fortress from the 16th century as well as a lively boating culture. The ferry back to Stockholm (not included) departs regularly and takes about an hour.

Day 4: Saltsjobaden (57km/35.4mi)

Your goal today is the idyllic bathing village of Saltsjobaden before you return to Stockholm via Skogskyrkogarden (woodland cemetery), which according to UNESCO is an outstanding example for the merge of architecture and landscape. Learn more about the cemetery in the visitor centre or book a guided tour (not included).

Day 5: Stockholm National City Park (40km/24.9mi)

Today you'll have a mix of greenery and museums and palaces as you head to Djurgarden island and the Royal National City Park were you can visit the Vasa museum. Continue to the north of the city where Ulriksdal Palace awaits for a stroll in the palace gardens. Next stop is the Haga Parkmuseum before passing in front of Karlsberg Palace, now home to Sweden's Military Academy.
