Stockholm Archipelago Island Hopping

  • Island-hopping in the Stockholm archipelago
  • UNESCO Skogskyrkogarden, a 20th Century cemetery that blends vegetation and architectural elements
  • Immerse yourself in nature, with barren cliffs, soft sandy beaches, green meadows and deep forests

The Stockholm archipelago is the largest archipelago in Sweden, and the second-largest archipelago in the Baltic Sea with over 30,000 islands. Over the summer months it rarely gets dark during the nights, and the weather is pleasantly warm.

During this bike tour you experience the well-known Scandinavian air of the Swedish capital city and explore its beautiful archipelago. Vaxholm - the capital city of the archipelago, and also the charming islands of Rindo, Varmdo and Sandhamn are fascinating places to explore. This cycling holiday offers the perfect mix of metropolis and archipelago - air, culinary highlights and nature as far as the eye can see.

Explore the city of Stockholm, itself made up of 14 islands, the old town, Gamla Stan is built on the central island and worth a visit before using ferries to get between the islands where you'll cycle on bike paths and gravel roads as well as forest tracks and side roads with less traffic through typical Swedish nature.

You stay in 4* well-appointed hotels, with breakfast included throughout.

Day 1: Arrive in Stockholm

Take a first stroll through Sweden's capital and explore some of the many sights and tourist attractions.

In the evening you will receive your bikes.
You stay at Hotel Birger Jarl

Day 2: Stockholm to Vaxholm (27km/16.8mi or 46km/28.6mi)

After breakfast you start your tour across Djurgarden, the green island of Stockholm and along the coast to Djursholm. The suburb is popular for local craftsmanship, you will recognise this in many, beautiful houses. For the shorter option, take the ferry to the Bogesund nature reserve (tickets not included, 30 min). Visit Bogesund Castle (optional, not included) before ending in Vaxholm, the capital city of the archipelago, with its grand fortress from the 16th century. Your route is mostly flat with slight hills. If you opt for the longer route (without ferry), there is 4KM along a busier road.
You stay at Waxholms Hotell (Breakfast)

Day 3: Vaxholm to Varmdo (33km/20.5mi)

In the morning you take the ferry to the island of Rindo (20 mins, not included) and after a short time exploring Rindo, you take another ferry to Varmdo (30 mins, not included). It is well worth a visit to see the stone church from the 14th century with its magnificent altar and paintings by the well-known painter Bernt Notke. You are now in the middle of the archipelago - look forward to small villages and plenty of nature. You finally reach your hotel, via the impressive Djurobron (bridge). The route is mostly flat, and the last 8km section is on the main road through the island.
You stay at Hotell Fågelbrohus (Breakfast)

Day 4: At Varmdo (31km/19.3mi)

Today also starts with a ferry; from Stavsnas to the popular island of Sandhamn (approx. 55mins, not included). This is a true summer paradise with bright summer villas, small streets and nice opportunities for rest stops. Explore the small island or take a swim, ending the afternoon with some relaxation, before returning to Stavsnas by ferry.
You stay at Hotell Fågelbrohus (Breakfast)

Day 5: Varmdo to Saltsjobaden (47km/29.2mi)

This route is flat to slightly hilly. Via Fagelbrolandet you cycle to the village of Gustavsberg. Not far away you have the possibility to visit the Artipelag, a modern art museum with impressive art and sculptures on approx. 10.000m2. Via Skurusund bridge, you reach Saltsjobaden. The idyllic small town is a very popular recreation area for the locals.

A few more kms later you arrive back in Stockholm, via the islands of Sodermalm and Langholmen.
