ITINERARY

TERRAIN

This walking route from Burgos to Leon follows the heart of the Camino Frances across the vast Meseta Plateau. The terrain is mostly flat to gently undulating, with long, open stretches along well-marked dirt paths, farm tracks, and quiet rural lanes. Walkers experience wide horizons, expansive skies, and a peaceful rhythm through traditional villages and farmland. While less hilly than earlier stages, the openness of the land, and its exposure to natural elements, offers a reflective and contemplative part of the wider Camino de Santiago journey.

Day 1: Arrive in Burgos

Arrive in Burgos and settle into your accommodation before exploring this historic city. From the Church of San Lesmes and the Arco de San Sebastian to the iconic Gothic Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city offers a meaningful introduction to this stage of the Camino.

YOUR ACCOMMODATION

To reflect the spirit of the Pilgrimage, we carefully select welcoming, simple accommodation along the route. We offer stays in hotels and guest houses. While these stays may not offer the same level of luxury as our classic Headwater holidays, they provide genuine hospitality and a warm, friendly atmosphere.

You will enjoy private rooms and private bathrooms wherever possible, ensuring a restful night after a full day of walking the Camino Frances. On the rare occasions when this cannot be arranged, we will let you know in advance.

Most of the properties we work with are small and family-run, and availability varies depending on how early you book. Full details of your stays will be provided closer to your departure date.

Day 2: Burgos to Castrojeriz (20km/12.4mi)

After a short transfer to Rabe de las Calzadas, you will begin your day's walk through the heart of the Meseta. Along the way, you will pass through the historic village of Hornillos del Camino, an historic village that has long served as a key resting point for pilgrims crossing the plateau. Continue in the direction of Castrojeriz.

Day 3: Castrojeriz to Fromista (26km/16.2mi)

Leaving Castrojeriz, the path guides you through fields of wheat and stretches of poppies, with broad views characteristic of the Castilian plain. Romanesque architecture, a hallmark of the region's rich history, lines your path as you cross the Pisuerga River via the Puente Fitero and follow the tranquil towpath of the Canal de Castilla into Fromista, to the remarkable Romanesque Church of San Martin.

Day 4: Fromista to Carrion de los Condes (21km/13.0mi)

Surrounded by endless wheat fields in what's often called the 'breadbasket of Spain', you will make your way to the historic town of Carrion de los Condes. Once there, don't miss the impressive San Zoilo Monastery, a 10th century site that reflects the deep spiritual and architectural heritage of the Camino.

Day 5: Carrion de los Condes to Terradillos de los Templarios (25km/15.5mi)

Today, you will follow the historic Calzada de los Peregrinos, the Pilgrims' Road, towards Terradillos de los Templarios. Silence, peace, and solitude will accompany your journey, with the highlight of the day being Calzadilla de la Cueza, a village known for its traditional houses built from sun dried mud bricks.

Day 6: Terradillos de los Templarios to Sahagun (14km/8.7mi)

Continue your Camino from Terradillos de los Templarios, crossing the peaceful Meseta as you pass through the quiet villages of Moratinos and San Nicolas del Real Camino. Follow the gentle country paths into Sahagun, often regarded as the 'Heart of the Camino Frances,' recognised for its rich Mudejar architecture and long pilgrim traditions.

Day 7: Sahagun to El Burgo (18km/11.2mi)

Continue your Camino from Sahagun to El Burgo Ranero with a peaceful and easy stage along the flat Meseta landscape of Castilla y Leon. The route follows straight paths lined with poplar trees, offering open views and a steady pace. Services are available in small villages along the way, and the day ends in El Burgo Ranero, a quiet stop known for its welcoming atmosphere.

Day 8: El Burgo to Mansilla de las Mulas (19km/11.8mi)

Today, the peaceful, bucolic landscapes of the Canada de las Merinas, once an ancient transhumance route known as 'the flow of the sheep', will guide you on your way to Mansilla de las Mulas. Once there, take time to explore and reflect in the town's rich history through its well preserved ruins, including sections of the medieval city walls, defensive towers, and the impressive eastern gate.

Day 9: Mansilla to Leon (19km/11.8mi)

As you approach Leon, the quiet landscapes of the Meseta gradually give way to the life of the city. Once in Leon, you may wish to visit its majestic Gothic Cathedral, the Church of San Isidoro - once a royal pantheon and the historic Hostal de San Marcos. Then, unwind with a well earned rest in the lively Plaza Mayor. Enjoy the rest of your day exploring the city.

Day 10: Departure

Leave Leon and onward travels.

Enjoy the rest of your day exploring the town, and consider booking an extra night before heading home.

The booking process, over the phone, was quick and efficient. The representative was very friendly and helpful. Any spoken details were very quickly sent on as a series of e mails. I have felt fully informed at all stages.

The booking staff are always so helpful. The phone is answered promptly. The staff know the products very well and bend over backwards to accommodate all requests relating to any trip. I have travelled with Headwater a few times and have always been impressed with the booking service.

Patrick, 20 May 2025

Our agent found the right Lapland Hotel with ski hire etc for December 2025 so we went ahead and booked with him straight away. So now we count down the months to go deep into the Arctic Circle and do proper Finnish cross country skiing amongst the silence and herds of reindeer, with their Sami owners.

Plus a bit of snowmobiling too for good measure!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pilgrimage walking holiday?
A pilgrimage walking holiday is more than just a journey, it’s a chance to slow down, reflect, and immerse yourself in centuries of history and culture. Traditionally, pilgrimages were spiritual routes, but today they appeal to anyone seeking meaningful travel. You will usually follow well-trodden paths through charming villages, rolling countryside, and vibrant towns, connecting with local traditions along the way. It’s about walking with purpose, enjoying the rhythm of the trail, and discovering the stories that shape these iconic routes.
Do I need a pilgrim Camino passport?
Yes, if you’d like to collect stamps along the way and receive the official Compostela certificate in Santiago. The pilgrim passport, or credencial, is a wonderful keepsake of your journey, it’s stamped at churches, cafés, and hotels as you progress. Even if you’re not walking for religious reasons, it adds a lovely sense of occasion and helps you access pilgrim menus and accommodation.
How long is Camino Frances to walk?
The full Camino Frances stretches around 780 km (485 miles) from St. Jean Pied de Port in France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Most walkers take about 30–35 days to complete the entire route, averaging 20–25 km per day. If you’re short on time, you can choose to complete only a section—many opt for the final 100 km from Sarria to Santiago, which takes roughly a week.
When is the best time to walk the Camino Frances?
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are ideal. You will enjoy mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and landscapes at their most beautiful, think wildflowers in spring and golden vineyards in autumn. Summer is popular but can be hot and busy.
What is the recommended Camino Frances packing list?
Pack light, comfort is key! Essentials include: Lightweight, breathable clothing for layering Sturdy walking boots (well broken-in) Rain jacket and quick-dry gear Reusable water bottle Basic first aid kit (blister care is a must) Small daypack with good support Repelent for ticks and insects Remember, laundry facilities are common along the route, so less is more.
Is there any luggage restriction on Camino Frances?
If you have luggage transfers booked, the service is limited to one item per person. Please restrict the weight of each piece of luggage to no more than 20kg. There may be an additional charges should you bring more luggage, please advise us prior to departure so any extra luggage services can be arranged. At your first hotel, please mark your bags with the Surname of the lead booker and number each bag (1 of 2, 2 of 2 etc.). Please also ensure that where possible you lock your bags and leave nothing valuable in them. Please note we cannot be held responsible for any damage. Please have your bags ready for collection by 8am. We make every effort to deliver your luggage to the next hotel by 6pm, please contact us locally if your luggage has not arrived by this time.
What type of Camino Frances accommodation is provided?
On a Headwater holiday, you’ll stay in handpicked, characterful hotels and guesthouses, chosen for their comfort and local charm. You will be greeted by welcoming hosts, hearty regional meals, and peaceful night’s of sleep after a day on the trail. It’s a step up from the traditional pilgrim albergues, perfect if you want the Camino experience with a little extra comfort.
