Begin your journey in the heart of the Rioja region, where scenic walking trails lead you through rolling vineyards, fertile farmland and historic medieval towns. This unforgettable walking holiday immerses you in the rich cultural heritage of northern Spain, with stops in the charming towns of Navarrete, Najera, and Santo Domingo de la Calzada. As you continue through Montes de Oca, each step brings you closer to Santiago de Compostela, following in the footsteps of countless pilgrims on the iconic Camino de Santiago.
TERRAIN
This walking route from Logrono to Burgos continues along the Camino Frances through a varied landscape of vineyards, open plains, and gentle rolling hills. The terrain is generally moderate, with a mix of well-maintained paths, farm tracks, and quiet country roads. Walkers will enjoy the changing scenery from the fertile Rioja wine region to the expansive fields of Castille, with a few gradual climbs leading to panoramic views before descending into the historic city of Burgos.
Arrive in Logrono and check in to your accommodation. If time allows, take a leisurely stroll through the historic town centre or enjoy a scenic walk along the Ebro River.
YOUR ACCOMMODATION
To reflect the spirit of the Pilgrimage, we carefully select welcoming, simple accommodation along the route. We offer stays in hotels and guest houses. While these stays may not offer the same level of luxury as our classic Headwater holidays, they provide genuine hospitality and a warm, friendly atmosphere.
You will enjoy private rooms and private bathrooms wherever possible, ensuring a restful night after a full day of walking. On the rare occasions when this cannot be arranged, we will let you know in advance.
Most of the properties we work with are small and family-run, and availability varies depending on how early you book. Full details of your stays will be provided closer to your departure date.
Today's walk follows sections of the N120, weaving through scenic vineyards and rolling fields in the heart of the Rioja wine region. You will pass through Granjera Park, a peaceful nature reserve, before arriving in the medieval town of Navarrete, founded in the 12th century. Your day ends in the historic town of Najera, where a poem dedicated to pilgrims welcomes you on arrival.
Continuing your journey along the Camino de Santiago, today you will walk through agricultural landscapes between Najera and Santo Domingo de la Calzada. This peaceful stretch offers a slower pace and time for reflection. On arrival, take time to explore the historic town, especially the Cathedral of Santo Domingo de la Calzada and its legendary chickens, an enduring symbol of one of the Camino's most famous miracles.
Today's stage of the Camino de Santiago offers the option of a more scenic and pleasant route between Santo Domingo de la Calzada and Granon, with paths that occasionally run close to the N120. Along the way, you will pass through picturesque villages such as Redecilla del Camino, Castildelgado, and Villamayor del Rio. On arrival in Belorado, be sure to visit the Church of San Juan Bautista, a designated National Monument, and take time to relax in the charming Plaza Mayor.
This stretch of the Camino de Santiago takes you closer to the Montes de Oca, through peaceful moorland, dense forests and quiet rural hamlets. Your destination is the historic village of San Juan de Ortega, renowned for its ancient monastery and impressive Romanesque church, both recognised as National Monuments. Rich in culinary tradition, this small village offers a warm welcome to pilgrims. After your visit, you will be transferred to nearby Atapuerca for your overnight stay.
Your final stage on the Camino de Santiago leads you through the valley of the Rio San Juan, passing forests and quiet villages. As you near Burgos, the rural scenery gives way to one of the Camino Frances' most historic cities.
Burgos is home to the magnificent Gothic Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with landmarks such as the Plaza San Juan and the Arco de San Sebastian. Here, surrounded by medieval splendour, your Camino journey ends.
