Follow the final stage of the Camino de Santiago to Cape Finisterre, a legendary route once believed to lead to the very edge of the world. Leaving behind the spires of Santiago, you'll walk through peaceful Galician countryside, past eucalyptus forests, stone villages, and ancient chapels. As the Atlantic breeze grows stronger, the Camino Finisterre walk guides you towards the ocean at Finisterre, where pilgrims have long come to reflect and celebrate the journey's end.
TERRAIN
The route from Santiago to Finisterre is well marked and follows a mix of forest paths, quiet country lanes, and coastal tracks. The terrain is generally moderate, with a few short climbs and descents as you approach the Atlantic. The final day's walk along sandy beaches towards Cape Finisterre is especially memorable. This is a comfortable walking holiday for those with reasonable fitness, offering a peaceful and varied finish to the Camino experience.
Arrive in Santiago de Compostela and check into your accommodation before spending the afternoon soaking up the atmosphere of the old town, discovering the Plaza del Obradoiro and the magnificent cathedral, home to the relics of St. James.
YOUR ACCOMMODATION
To reflect the spirit of the Pilgrimage, we carefully select welcoming, simple accommodation along the route. We offer stays in hotels and guest houses. While these stays may not offer the same level of luxury as our classic Headwater holidays, they provide genuine hospitality and a warm, friendly atmosphere.
You will enjoy private rooms and private bathrooms wherever possible, ensuring a restful night after a full day of walking. On the rare occasions when this cannot be arranged, we will let you know in advance.
Most of the properties we work with are small and family-run, and availability varies depending on how early you book. Full details of your stays will be provided closer to your departure date.
Leaving the city behind, you can look back for a superb view of the city and its cathedral before heading towards Ponte Maceira, a riverside village on the Rio Tambre. With its medieval bridge, old mill and granite houses, it's certain to be a highlight that marks the first stage of your walk to Negreira.
Today's walk follows an old royal path through quiet woodland and scattered hamlets. Along the way you will see the church of San Xian, the ancient Calvary of Zas, and megalithic remains, as well as traditional granite horreos, Galicia's distinctive stone granaries, that line the route before your walk ends in A Picota.
As you walk towards the coast, the scenery begins to change. Chapels and crosses give way to sea views, as you gradually approach the harbour town of Cee on the Ria de Corcubion. Explore the waterfront, or visit the town's Gothic sanctuary before settling in for the night.
Your final walk begins across moorlands and mossy stone walls, with sweeping views of the Atlantic beside you. As you near the end of this stage, the route passes along beautiful sandy beaches such as Estorde, Sardineiro and Langosteira before reaching the fishing town of Finisterre. A short climb then takes you to Cape Finisterre and its historic lighthouse, where a statue of Santiago marks your arrival at the legendary 'End of the world.'
Leave Finisterre and onward travels.
Enjoy the rest of your day exploring the town, and consider booking an extra night before heading home.
