Highlights of the Lycian Coast

General information:

This is a 2 boot independent holiday.

The ascents and descents are not that severe, although the walking isn’t that easy. Where the walks are harder it is because they are long rather than strenuous. Some paths are rocky underfoot and care must be taken, but the majority of trails and paths are clear and well marked, and there are no particularly vertiginous parts.

High limestone mountains fall steeply into the sea all the way along this coast. The lower slopes are all pine forest that line the valleys and ravines, some of them stepped with ancient terraces full of olive trees and small fields of vines and chillies. Villagers along the way still work in the countryside and walkers are a bit of a special treat for them – they are always greeted very warmly.

Although the mountains are high here, the walks don’t go over the top of them, but rather follow contours of the coastline.

Walking details:

Walks are on dirst or rocky paths and tracks. Some sections of day 6 are loose and rocky underfoot. Walkers should be fit and sure footed. Some walks pass beehives - the threat of being stung is very remote, however, if you are severly alergic to stings, we suggest you choose a different holiday. Walking boots are essential, walking poles are recommended.

This holiday takes you to some of the prettiest sections of the Turquoise Coast, and includes varied walks through fascinating abandoned villages leading to lovely lagoons, and through seemingly-impassable gorges.

The combination of ancient history - the Roman, Greek and Lycian Empires flourished here - and beautiful countryside is especially impressive. Gorgeous picnic spots and amazing viewpoints are a particular feature of this holiday, and we suggest how to make the most of the day in the introductions to each day’s walk.

The people of the villages that you pass through are incredibly friendly. It is definitely worth picking up a few phrases to use when you are there, as the welcome you receive is just wonderful, and locals love it if you stop to chat, however poor your language skills!
