Discovering the Ebro Delta by bike

On this 7 night single centre holiday you'll discover the lush wetlands of the Ebro Delta, offering you a wonderful insight into the waterways and natural habitats of this region - one of the most important of its kind in Europe. We've put together a diverse week's cycling offering lots of choice and flexibility, all from your base in the charming whitewashed town of Poble Nou del Delta. You'll travel along traffic-free routes, with a mixture of quiet roads and riverside trails, the Montsia Mountains providing a spectacular backdrop.

You'll take in impressive bird-filled lagoons, home to beautiful, scented sea lavender and Zygophyllum Album (only to be found here and on some of the Greek Islands) and visit peaceful nature reserves, including a freshwater reserve, home to delicate lilies, toothcarps, sticklebacks and newts; you may also spot turtles and birds including herons, egrets and European bee-eaters to name but three! Visit the beautiful, unspoilt beaches of Illa de Buda, Sant Carles de la Rapita (with its sweeping promenade) and Riumar; you can also soak up some Roman history in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Tarragona, overlooking the sea.

Your base for the week is the charming family-run Hotel L'Algadir, a boutique hotel in the quaint town of Poble Nou del Delta. You'll appreciate its lovely relaxed atmosphere, outdoor swimming pool and terrace, and the restaurant serving excellent locally grown food; be sure to try the exquisite, freshly caught seafood. Chef Alex is very proud of his menu and is often seen wandering the restaurant chatting with customers!

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive in Poble Nou del Delta

Arrive at Hotel L'Algadir - your base for the next 7 nights.

Day 2 - Birdwatching around the lagoons 27km/17mi

Today’s circular cycle takes you first towards the beach before heading inland to the most impressive lagoons for birdlife in Europe – La Tancada and L’Encanyissada. Between the two you have the chance to stop off and visit the Casa de Fusta, an old hunting lodge which now houses an exhibition all about the lagoons of the Ebro Delta. It’s then back to the hotel for a drink on the terrace before dinner.

Day 3 - The Ebro and Illa de Buda 42km/26.5mi or 50km/31.5mi

It’s a totally different day today as you head through the paddy fields to Sant Jaume d’Enveja where you get your first glimpses of the River Ebro; why not stop for a drink on the riverfront? Enjoy a cycle alongside the river - watch out for cranes, grebes and terns - to Illa de Buda overlooking the original mouth of the Ebro. From here you have a choice: visit the long sandy beach and the coastline (add 10km to your cycling day) or return to the hotel for a dip in the pool.

Day 4 - Sant Carles de la Ràpita 22km/14mi

The refined coastal town of Sant Carles de la Ràpita is your destination today. Lock up your bikes and wander along its sweeping promenade before lunch at one of its many restaurants overlooking the beach. In the afternoon either relax on the beach, visit the statue of Christ towering above the town or take a boat trip across the bay (payable locally).

Day 5 - The mouth of the river and Deltebre 50km/31.5mi or 54km/34mi

Our route today crosses the River Ebro and takes us through Deltebre, the capital of the Delta - a visit to the Ecomuseum perhaps? It’s then on to Riumar, a perfect place for lunch and one of the nicest beaches in the area. Take time to relax before heading to the viewing tower - the Mirador Passeig Garxal - where the river meets the sea, affording superb views over the Delta.

Day 6 - Visit Roman Tarragona

It’s a day off from the bikes today. Take a taxi (payable locally) to Aldea and then a train to Roman Tarragona. This impressive UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts Roman walls, a forum, a necropolis and an impressive amphitheatre complete with sea views; the historic centre also has a good choice of bars and restaurants. Tonight you’ll eat out in Poble Nou del Delta; with its hacienda feel, this charming town has a great atmosphere and offers many bars and restaurants for you to choose from.

Day 7 - Along the Ebro to Amposta 37km/23.5mi

Today you head to the old port city of Amposta with its daily food market – why not purchase your picnic supplies for later? Explore the narrow streets and spend time people-watching in the main square. Don’t miss the Ebro museum which details the history of the Delta over the centuries. It’s then onward to the freshwater nature reserve at Ullals de Baltasar before a final drink at your favourite bar in Poble Nou before dinner.

Day 8 - Leave Poble Nou del Delta

Please note that cycling helmets are compulsory in Spain for all customers. As we are unable to provide these, we strongly recommend that you bring your own.

A wonderfully relaxed but interesting holiday with good food and a comfy bed, a highlight was when we saw a Heron catch a snake and fly off with it in it's beak, as we were cycling along by the side of it!
