TERRAIN

The terrain on this cycling holiday is generally varied, combining gentle riverside and coastal paths with quiet country roads and occasional undulating sections through villages and rural countryside. Overall, it’s a scenic, mixed terrain ride that’s manageable for cyclists with some experience but not aimed at complete beginners. Please note: Cycling helmets are a legal requirement in Spain.

They were very friendly and helpful. It did take a few days to finalise the package, but as this was just after New Year we can understand why.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Galicia weather like?
Galicia has a mild, Atlantic climate that sets it apart from much of Spain. Summers are generally warm rather than hot, with temperatures averaging 20–25°C. Rain is common throughout the year, particularly in autumn and winter, which gives the region its famously green landscapes. The most pleasant weather is usually between May and September, when rainfall is lower and days are longer. July and August are the driest and warmest months, ideal for coastal walks and beach visits, while late spring and early autumn offer comfortable temperatures with fewer crowds.
Where in Spain is Galicia?
Galicia is located in the far north-west of Spain, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and north, Portugal to the south, and the Spanish regions of Asturias and Castile and León to the east. Its rugged coastline, known as the Rías, and its rolling inland hills give the region a distinct character that feels very different from southern Spain.
Which Galicia food should I try when visiting?
Galician cuisine is deeply rooted in the sea and countryside, with simple recipes that highlight high-quality local produce. One of the most famous dishes is pulpo a la gallega (Galician-style octopus), typically served with potatoes, olive oil and paprika. Seafood lovers should also try fresh clams, mussels and scallops, often prepared with minimal seasoning to let the natural flavours shine. From the land, empanada gallega,a savoury pie filled with tuna, meat or vegetables, is a regional staple. To finish, tarta de Santiago, an almond cake marked with the Cross of St James, is a must. Galicia is also known for excellent white wines, particularly Albariño, which pairs perfectly with the local seafood.
What are the Parador Hotels?
Paradores are a unique network of Spanish hotels often housed in historic or architecturally significant buildings such as castles, monasteries, palaces and manor houses. In Galicia, staying in a Parador is an opportunity to experience the region’s history first-hand, with properties set in dramatic coastal locations or historic city centres. Examples include the Parador de Santiago de Compostela, located beside the cathedral and considered one of the oldest hotels in the world, and the Parador de Baiona, a fortified medieval castle overlooking the Atlantic. Paradores combine traditional character with modern comfort and are particularly popular with travellers seeking culture, heritage and a sense of place.
When is the best time to visit Galicia?
The best time to visit Galicia is generally from May to September. Late spring and early summer offer mild temperatures, lush scenery and fewer visitors, while July and August provide the best beach weather and lively local festivals. September is also an excellent choice, combining warm seas, harvest season and a more relaxed atmosphere after the summer peak.
What is a recommended Galicia packing list?
A practical packing list for Galicia should reflect its changeable weather. Bring lightweight layers, a waterproof jacket and comfortable walking shoes, particularly if you plan to explore coastal paths or historic towns. Even in summer, evenings can be cool, so a jumper is advisable. An umbrella or compact raincoat is useful year-round, and sunscreen is recommended for sunnier days by the coast. If visiting churches or historic sites, modest clothing is helpful, and food lovers may want to leave space in their luggage for local delicacies to take home.
