Cycling around the River Ebro

Experience idyllic, rural Spain at its very best on this six night holiday in the Terres de l'Ebre area of Catalunya. You'll cycle a wonderful mix of rural, riverside and coastal trails, getting close to nature in the Ebro Delta, one of the most important delta regions of its kind in Europe and home to over 160 species of birds. The whole area is rich in birdlife, wetlands and rice fields, yet is also home to some beautiful beaches and charming historic towns and villages.

Your holiday starts amidst charming villages and sweet-smelling orange groves, as you make your way to the crusader city of Tortosa. The narrow streets of this beautiful city are filled with Roman and Spanish Civil War history, with particular highlights being the imposing Cathedral of Santa Maria, and Suda Castle with its stunning 360° views over the city. After crossing the Ebro River you have the option to cycle past an impressive freshwater reserve, home to toothcarps, sticklebacks, newts and lilies; you may even spot egrets and herons to name just two of the many species here! The coastal town of Sant Carles de la Rapita makes a good choice for your free day - relax on the wide sandy beaches and treat yourself to some excellent seafood. You finish your week's cycling along peaceful trails past rice paddies and across the Ebro, heading to the bustling fishermen's town of L'Ampolla. This is where the Mediterranean meets the Ebro and the town is home to a series of small, sandy beaches dotted between the coves - unique on the Catalan coast.

We've chosen some great hotels for you to relax in each night, all with swimming pools. The Hotel Flamingo sits on the edge of lively L'Ampolla, boasting sea views and an indoor and outdoor pool; the Parador de Tortosa, which is situated within the spectacular, C10 Suda Castle, affords wonderful panoramic views of the Ebro Valley; while the charming, family-run Hotel L'Algadir in the quiet town of Poble Nou del Delta offers superb hosts, excellent food and a lovely outdoor terrace.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive in L’Ampolla

Arrive at your hotel where you'll stay in a sea view room. Eat at the hotel tonight or explore the lively town and choose from one of its seafront restaurants.

Day 2 - L'Ampolla to Tortosa 35km/22mi

Today you’ll leave the coast behind you as you cycle past rustic, working villages towards the small town of Aldea. Stop off here for a spot of lunch and visit the hermitage which dates back to the C12. Then it’s on through orchards and olive groves, and meandering canalside paths affording you wonderful glimpses of the Ebro. You’ll cycle through vines and past beautifully scented orange trees, before arriving at historic Tortosa and your C10 castle for the next two nights.

Day 3 - At Tortosa

Spend today in the impressive, Templar city of Tortosa, which dates back 2000 years. Walk around the ancient walls and monuments, discover the Gothic Cathedral of Santa Maria, see the superbly restored old quarter or visit the open-air sculpture museum. If you fancy going further afield, take a train to Tarragona where you can wander a maze of cobbled streets and marvel at the stunning amphitheatre overlooking the sea. Or perhaps opt for a cycle along the Vine Cutter railway line, a fabulous traffic-free cycle track cut through the vines.

Day 4 - Tortosa to Poble Nou del Delta 36km/22.5mi or 45km/28.5mi

Leaving Tortosa you’ll cross the Ebro River today and follow a canalside path, enjoying views of the Els Ports mountain range. Pass the impressive Torre de la Carrova and arrive in Amposta, a former port town of the river, which now houses an interesting museum all about the Ebro River and its valley. You then have two options: follow a tranquil riverside trail along the Ebro or cycle past the freshwater nature reserve of Ullals de Baltasar, making your way to Poble Nou del Delta and the welcoming Hotel L’Algadir. Perhaps sit out on the terrace this evening and enjoy one of the Ebro’s signature sunsets.

Day 5 - At Poble Nou del Delta

This charming whitewashed town, with its hacienda feel, sits within the Ebro Delta and offers many possibilities for your free day. Visit the coastal town of Sant Carles de la Ràpita and stroll along the promenade, enjoy a day on the beach at Playa Eucaliptus or follow one of the many circular cycle trails available, the most impressive of which circles two bird reserves which host more than 160 species of birds including crested coots, skylarks, herons and moorhens to name but a few – the flamingos are a real highlight!

Day 6 - Poble Nou del Delta to L'Ampolla 38km/24mi

Today you leave Poble Nou del Delta and head to the coast. You’ll cycle past the Tancada nature reserve – the best place to enjoy the flamingos – and on through rice fields, before meeting the River Ebro. A riverside path takes you to a bridge where you’ll cross the river between the towns of Sant Jaume and the capital of the Delta, Deltebre – from the bridge you’ll enjoy idyllic views of the coast, mountains and lush vegetation. Head back to L’Ampolla to relax on the beach or enjoy a dip in the sea before your journey home tomorrow.

Day 7 - Leave L’Ampolla

Please note that cycling helmets are compulsory in Spain for all customers. As we are unable to provide these, we strongly recommend that you bring your own.

The region was flat for easy cycling, except for the climb up to the Parador Tortosa!! but it was fun trying. Allan made it to the top! All the hotels were great . A good mix of eating options.

Reviewed by Mr Moore on 07/10/2016

This particular holiday, cycling in the River Ebro region, offers the traveller a wonderful variety of scenery and opportunities to explore this relatively unspoiled part of Spain. Value is added by the extremely friendly and accommodating locals. The HW sourced accommodation was superb and the in-house dining second to none. Dining outside of the hotels was relatively cheap and of a very high standard. Sections of the route instructions contain inaccuracies which, for us, simply added to the fun, though they should perhaps be revisited as they could cause problems for the more diffident. Our reliable and extremely helpful representative in country did a wonderful job of making us feel welcome and we felt reassured that we could call on her any time in case of a crisis. Well done Triona!
