Greece

Cycling in the Peloponnese

  • Cycle from mountains to coast; traditional settlements, ancient cities, fishing villages and seaside towns
  • Important historical and archaeological sites of Mycenae, Epidaurus, Mantinea and Tegea
  • Ride varied landscapes stopping at cafes and tavernas for homemade local specialities and fresh seafood

The Peloponnese is the Greece of myth and legend. Hera bathed in the Carathus spring near Epidaurus, the attack against Troy was led from Mycenae and it was in Lerna that Hercules killed the Hydra, a mythical beast with many heads. Aside from being the cradle of Greek civilisation, it is also astoundingly beautiful. The mountainous region of Arcadia has thick pine forests and meadows alive to the scent of wild mint and the gently sloping lowlands towards the coast are a tangle of vineyards and citrus and olive groves, bright with oleander bushes.

The tour starts in Vytina, a small traditional village in the Mainalo mountain range, that played an important role during the Greek War of Independence in 1821. Cycle through the mountains passing through picturesque villages to reach Tripoli, the ancient capital of Arcadia in the heart of the Peloponnese peninsula. Visit the ancient settlements of Mantinea, Tegea and Eva before reaching the coast at the small fishing village of Paralio Astros. Follow the coast to Nafplio, the first capital of Greece, from where you visit Mycenae, the kingdom of mythical King Agamemnon and Epidaurus, the most important healing centre of antiquity.

Day 1: Arrive in Vytina

Arrive at your hotel in the central square of Vytina.
You stay at the Hotel Art Mainalon

Day 2: Vytina to Tripoli 38km/24mi

Your day starts with an uphill ride into the mountains to Alonistaina, a traditional settlement and one of the highest villages in the Peloponnese. Continue along fir-lined country roads to the village of Piana, important during the Greek War of Independence. Enjoy a rest in a kafeneio beside the church of Saint Georgios, built on a rock before starting the descent to Tripoli, capital of Arcadia region.
You stay at the Palatino Hotel (breakfast included)

Day 3: At Tripoli 47km/29.5mi

A circular route today starts with a cycle through vineyards and apple orchards to reach Mantineia, one of the most important ancient Greek cities where you can explore the preserved archaeological site. Opposite the site is the church of Agia Foteini, built in 1972 but which combines several architectural elements (Classical, Byzantine, and Minoan). Continue through fruit crops to Kapsia cave, a natural wonder of multi-coloured stalactites and stalagmites before returning on quiet country roads to Tripoli.
You stay at the Palatino Hotel (breakfast included)

Day 4: Tripoli to Paralio Astros 55km/34.5mi

Today you descend to the coast. First stop is the settlement of Tegea, where you can see history in layers with a 10th Century Byzantine church constructed over the ruins of an ancient theatre. Continue through olive groves and small villages to the ancient city of Eva. Arrive in Paralio Astros, a beautiful small fishing village. Wander along the harbour, visit the castle on top of the hill or have a dip in the sea before choosing where to eat from one of the tavernas offering fresh fish and local specialties.
You stay at the Ariadne Hotel (breakfast included)

Day 5: Paralio Astros to Nafplio 45km/28.5mi

Follow an amazing coastal route along the Argolic Gulf coastline to reach Mili, a small seaside resort and a good place to take a refreshement break. Visit the archaeological site of Ancient Lerna and Lernea Hydra where Hercules killed the beast of many heads before heading to his hometown and one of the oldest cicties in Greece, Argos. Visit the ancient theatre before continuing on to the seaside resort of Nafplio. Spend your final three nights here allowing plenty of time to explore its narrow old streets, marbled square and bustling harbour.
You stay at the Hotel Ippoliti (breakfast included)

Day 6: At Nafplio - Mycenae 51km/32mi

Cycle through beautiful countryside of orange and lemon groves via the huge castle remains at Tiryns, considered to be one of the most important centres in the Eastern Mediterranean, to reach Bronze Age Mycenae, the kingdom of mythical King Agamemnon. Marvel at the Lions Gate at the main entrance of the Acropolis before exploring the rest of this extensive site. Return to Nafplio.
You stay at the Hotel Ippoliti (breakfast included)

Day 7: At Nafplio - Epidaurus 42km/26.5mi

The day starts with a transfer to the ancient healing centre of Epidaurus. The ancient theatre here is well-preserved and still used in the summer to host plays. Along with the theatre you'll also discover temples, porticoes, houses, shops and spas of this city that is considered to be the birthplace of medicine. Cycle mostly downhill through mountainous landscape and through the vast pistachio growing region back to the coast.
You stay at the Hotel Ippoliti (breakfast included)

Day 8: Leave Nafplio

Reviews

Everyone who goes on a Headwater holiday will be emailed a link to our post-holiday questionnaire where they can give us an honest assessment of all aspects of their holiday - everything from how quickly we answer the phone to how clean the hotels were - plus an overall rating and comments about their holiday.

Any feedback collected is posted to our website, so that people can make an informed decision based on past experiences before heading off on holiday. We don’t edit the reviews, the only thing we do is proofread them and alter any typos, where necessary, to ensure they are easy to read for everyone. All reviews will be published (except in certain extreme circumstances), and a member of the Headwater team will respond to any constructive criticisms/comments under the reviews, at their discretion. So, for the real tales, twists and turns of our holidays, look no further than the reviews from our previous travellers.

HARRISON, 13/05/2023

Cycling was underated, the routes were amazing. The hotels were overated. EG: advertised outdoor pool and spa. There was no spa and the pool was green and unusable.

Mr Taylor, 29/04/2023

A good holiday to view Greek archaeology.

Mr Makin, 15/04/2023

Nice time of year to cycle although a little chilly in the evening. Cycle routes were good to excellent regarding scenery/road quality. Avoid Easter weekend as very few restaurants are open in Tripoli.

Mrs Mccutcheon, 12/03/2023

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip and loved to see the contrasts in scenery/season as you move down from the mountains to the coast. The archaeological sites were well worth visiting, some are really quite extensive. Hotels were all good with very friendly staff/owners and copious breakfasts and plenty of options in all places for getting meals in the evening. Local agent was great when setting us up with the bikes and letting us know about bag transfer arrangements. He also pre-warned us about loose dogs in some areas - these are very territorial but only for a very short distance so we kept our heads down and cycled through them - sometimes using the boost on our e-bikes to get through more quickly!
