Leaving behind the Castilian plateau, the path climbs into the Leon mountains where the landscape turns wild and the air cool and clear. Each day reveals something new, from Gaudi's striking Episcopal Palace in Astorga to the symbolic Cruz de Ferro, and the thatched pallozas of O Cebreiro that signal your arrival in Galicia. The walk ends in Sarria, a vibrant town that marks the gateway to the final stage of the Camino to Santiago.

Day 1: Arrival in Leon

Arrive in Leon and settle into your accommodation. This lively city is the perfect place to begin your Camino. If times allows, explore its Gothic cathedral, the Church of San Isidoro and the old quarter around the Plaza Mayor, a perfect place for an evening stroll. Its narrow streets and busy squares make it an atmospheric start to your journey.

YOUR ACCOMMODATION

To reflect the spirit of the Pilgrimage, we carefully select welcoming, simple accommodation along the route. We offer stays in hotels and guest houses. While these stays may not offer the same level of luxury as our classic Headwater holidays, they provide genuine hospitality and a warm, friendly atmosphere.

You will enjoy private rooms and private bathrooms wherever possible, ensuring a restful night after a full day of walking. On the rare occasions when this cannot be arranged, we will let you know in advance.

Most of the properties we work with are small and family-run, and availability varies depending on how early you book. Full details of your stays will be provided closer to your departure date.

Day 2: VIllar to Hospital de Orbigo 24km (24km/14.9mi)

After a transfer from Viergen del Cmaino, continue through farmland and quiet hamlets. By day's end you will reach Hospital de Orbigo, crossing its impressive twenty-arched medieval bridge, a highlight for many walkers on this stretch.

Day 3: Hospital de orbigo to Astorga 17km (17km/10.6mi)

You will have plenty of variety today, as the flatlands give way to gentle hills and peaceful oak groves. As your path continues, the spires of Astorga will gradually appear ahead. This lively town is rich in history, where the Camino Frances meets the Via de la Plata. Take time to explore Gaudi's Episcopal Palace, the cathedral, and the winding streets of the old quarter.

Day 4: Astorga to Rabanal del Camino (22km/13.7mi)

Today's walk leaves Astorga and climbs steadily into the Leon mountains passing through peaceful stone villages that have been brought back to life by the Camino. Step by step the views open up, and by late afternoon you will arrive in Rabanal del Camino, a once abandoned village now restored by pilgrims, its quiet lanes and traditional houses offering a calm place to rest.

Day 5: Rabanal to Acebo (17km/10.6mi)

The walk from Rabanal climbs into the Leon mountains to reach the Puerto de Irago, the highest point on this part of the Camino Frances. At the Cruz de Ferro, many walkers pause to place a stone brought from home, a simple tradition full of meaning. The route then descends through heather clad slopes to the small mountain village of Acebo.

Day 6: Acebo to Ponferrada (18km/11.2mi)

Today the path descends through moorland into the fertile Bierzo valley, a land of vineyards, orchards and soft rolling hills. The day ends in Ponferrada, where you can explore the impressive 13th-century Templar Castle and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of this welcoming town.

Day 7: Ponferrada to Villafranca del Bierzo (25km/15.5mi)

You continue west through the Bierzo valley, passing vineyards and the towns of Cacabelos and Camponaraya, known for their beautiful traditional architecture. On arrival in Villafranca del Bierzo, it is worth visiting the Church of Santiago, once a place of compassion where pilgrims too weary to go on were granted the same blessings as those who reached Santiago de Compostela. This tradition gives the town a lasting importance on the Camino.

Day 8: Villafranca del Bierzo to Ambasmestas (14km/8.7mi)

Leaving Villafranca del Bierzo, you will have a gentle day through lush valley, small villages and chestnut woods. The pace slows as the landscape begins to rise towards the Galician hills. Spend the night in Ambasmestas, a peaceful hamlet set at the foot of the climb to O Cebreiro.

Day 9: Ambasmesta to O Cebreiro (13km/8.1mi)

Today's walk is demanding but rewarding, bringing you to the emblematic village of O Cebreiro. Surrounded by rolling hills often touched by mist, the village is known for its Celtic atmosphere and distinctive pallozas, ancient thatched stone dwellings that feel unchanged by time. Reaching O Cebreiro is a highlight of the Camino, both for its beauty and its sense of tradition.

Day 10: O Cebreiro to Triacastela - (sleep in Samos) (21km/13.0mi)

From the hilltop village of O Cebreiro, your journey continues along a ridge with wide views across Galicia before beginning its long descent. This stage marks your first full day in Galicia. The trail continures to gradually descend through rolling green hillsides and hamlets that add to the Celtic character of the region. This penultimate stage finishes in Triacastela, a modest but welcoming town, before a short transfer to Samos, where you will spend the night.

Day 11: Triacastela to Sarria (19km/11.8mi)

A morning transfer takes you back to Triacastela to rejoin the Camino. From here, the trail leads through Galicia's rolling countryside and quiet hamlets, where you'll see the first horreos, the region's traditional stone granaries. The walk ends in Sarria, a lively town with a hillside medieval quarter and welcoming atmosphere. It's the perfect place to pause, reflect and enjoy the sense of arrival after your journey from Leon.

Day 12: Departure

Leave Santiago de Compostela and onward travels.

Enjoy the rest of your day exploring the town, and consider booking an extra night before heading home.
