TRIP DESCRIPTION

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most dramatic and beautiful coastlines in Europe. Mountains rise steeply out of the Mediterranean far below and picturesque towns nestle neatly in isolated coves. This self-guided walking holiday sees you descend from your quiet base in Agerola, following mule tracks and old paths through hillside villages, lemon groves and beautiful deep gorges to towns with narrow streets, whitewashed buildings and fascinating churches, monasteries and cathedrals.

Away from the trails there is plenty of time to partake in the traditional Amalfi pastimes of sampling incredible food and wine, as well as enjoying the Mediterranean climate. A highlight of the tour is one of the world's greatest walks, trekking on the 'Path of the Gods'. A visit to the Bay of Naples would not be complete without seeing the incredible Roman remains of Pompeii beneath the volcanic cone of Vesuvius.

Terrain

This holiday follows stone steps, coastal paths and some forest trails, some of which are rocky and uneven in places. You need to be a fit and confident walker, as the frequent ascents and descents, particularly on the coastal paths, are steep in places and make this a more demanding holiday than the distances suggest. On the Path of the Gods, guests with a fear of heights may have problems with certain sections. Walkers with knee problems may have difficulty descending the stone steps and walking poles are strongly recommended.

Run by the Acampora family, the Hotel Due Torri provides a welcoming and cosy atmosphere. Panoramic views capture the cultural and natural beauty of the Mediterranean palm trees of the Amalfi bay and views over the Lattari Mountains, whilst allowing easy access to the Amalfi and Sorrento Coast, Herculaneum, Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii.

There are 30 modern and comfortable rooms. Each room has air-conditioning, TV, telephone and bath or shower facilities.

The Hotel Due Torri’s restaurant is reputable for their local and authentic dishes. They serve homemade pasta dishes and fresh seafood washed down with traditional local wines.

Please note that if the Hotel Due Torri does not have availability for your requested departure date, you will be allocated a room in either the comfortable Artemide apartment next to the hotel, the well appointed Andromeda apartment opposite the hotel or at the Canto delle Sirene B&B, a short walk from the Hotel Due Torri. Meals will still be taken at the hotel.

You will be advised at time of booking confirmation if you are affected.

Extra nights: Please contact us for details.

Day 2: Amalfi (9km/5.6mi)

After breakfast, start your walk to Amalfi and the glorious coast. Today has a downhill bias as you follow the path down from Bomerano at 700m to the shores of the Mediterranean and the town of Amalfi. Wonderful views of the Amalfi Coast accompany you as you follow the trail. There are sections of steps today (approx. 2000 in total).

Amalfi itself has been popular with the British since Edwardian times when the upper classes favoured the town as a pleasant place to spend their winters. The large Duomo (Cathedral) dominates the town with its bright coloured tiles so typical of the region. You will arrive in time to explore the town, take a swim or enjoy a well-earned ice cream before returning to Bomerano by bus.

Day 3: Monte Tre Calli Walk (10km/6.2mi)

From the front door of the hotel it's a short stroll to the village square (or in the case of Bomerano, a triangle) and the start of your walk. Following a mixture of paths and tracks you ascend to the top of Monte Tre Calli, where you are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of the coastline and the sea. The Agerola Plain and the village of Bomerano is laid out below you and looking west on a clear day you can see the famous island of Capri at the westernmost tip of the Sorrento Peninsula.

Day 4: Free day; optional trip to Pompeii or Capri

For your first free day you may choose to visit the amazing city of Pompeii which, during the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius spanning two days in AD 79, was completely buried in ash and pumice. Lost for 1700 years, Pompeii's perfectly preserved remains give us an amazing insight into the life of a Roman city. You may also wish to add on a trip to Mount Vesuvius and walk up to the volcano crater. Depending on the weather conditions, you may choose to be led by a specialist Volcano guide through one of the many incredible walks around the crater of Vesuvius. Private transfers to these sites are bookable locally. Alternatively you could enjoy a boat ride along the coast from Amalfi (available from Easter to October), visit the majestic island of Capri, or spend the day relaxing by the hotel pool!

Day 5: Path of the Gods' to Positano (10km/6.2mi)

Today you may enjoy one of the world's finest day walks. Leaving from your front door step it's a short stroll through the quiet village of Bomerano before beginning the Walk of the Gods. The route follows the contours of the land for the majority of the day with amazing views of the Amalfi Coastline far below. In season the hillside is carpeted with flowers and the coastal waters teem with cruisers and pleasure boats. Your destination today is Positano, an almost vertical town of colourful buildings reached by a network of ancient paths and tracks. On the way there is plenty of time to admire one of the most beautiful views of the Amalfi Coast before descending a long series of steps into Positano. You will have time to explore before returning in the late afternoon; you may even choose to take a boat trip back to Amalfi.

elevation

Day 6: Valle delle Ferriere (9km/5.6mi)

A more difficult walk today to the Vale delle Ferriere National Park. Follow the hillside through the groves to a stunning viewpoint then descend along a rocky path, passing through aromatic woodland filled with wild flowers, to a beautiful moss-clad waterfall with a lush gorge.

elevation

Day 7: Amalfi to Ravello (7km/4.3mi)

Ravello is home to one of the most classic views of the Amalfi Coast. Take the bus down to Amalfi where your walk begins. Passing through the village of Atrani, you will make your way up through the cobbled streets and alleyways before arriving in Ravello.

REVIEWS

We stayed in the Artemide apartment, which was only a few yards from the hotel reception; the staff at the hotel were lovely, the food excellent; we enjoyed participating in the visits to the kitchens for the pizza, pasta and tiramisu making and socialising with the other hotel guests.

We really enjoyed our holiday despite the changeable weather and the towns & bus services becoming very overcrowded later in the week. We experienced wonderful views on all our walks, from the paths high above the coast, from the top of Tre Colli and the waterfalls in the nature reserve at Valle delle Ferriere (we did this walk to/from the reserve starting from the village of Pontone), on our free day we did a walk through the lemon groves to Maiori. Be aware that there a lot of stone steps on the downhill walks; we used local buses to avoid where we could (eg from Montepertuso to Positano and from Pontone to Amalfi).

Michael Gilmore, 20 Apr 2024

The transfers were excellent and we really enjoyed the family run hotel, the service was great and food very good. I think we’re found the walks quite strenuous but that’s probably because we ourselves weren’t really fit enough but we thoroughly enjoyed them nonetheless! The views were amazing. Everything was very well organised, the flight was diverted for refuelling but that was obviously nothing to do with Headwater! So we were on the plane for 7 hours whereas it should have been 2 hrs 40.

Helen Parkinson, 23 Sep 2023

My first walking holiday with Headwater. Fabulous-from start to finish. The walking, food & stunning views.

We were self guided but it was lovely in the evenings to be asked if we wanted to join a group in the kitchen to see our meal being cooked, included in bbq.

But had our own table etc. ( you need to enjoy local food & not expect to eat early)

Other benefit being with like minded people- they are there for the walking, socialising, food, wine but comfort of a clean bedroom, hot shower & not late noisy nights🤣

Susan Fewell, 16 Sep 2023

The holiday was well-organised and the walk descriptions were easy to follow. The walks were perhaps more strenuous than we had expected. The only thing that spoiled the holiday was that one of our suitcases did not arrive and still has not arrived. We would appreciate more help from Headwater with this.

Stephen Arnold, 9 Sep 2023

A great walking holiday in a great location .

Francois Loudwig, 9 Sep 2023

Excellent holiday wonderful scenery with a variety of well planned walks. All staff helpful friendly and attentive. Difficult to find fault

Andrew Gray, 2 Sep 2023

We had a really good week, even though the weather was variable. That’s life. The hotel was very comfy and food was good. We enjoyed the walks -especially the path of the gods.

The walking app was very good and saved a lot of time and effort looking at a map, or instructions.

Buses were a nightmare, especially with the road from Agerola to Amalfi being closed for half the week. This obviously restricted our movements.

The bus in Priano (to Amalfi) didn’t stop at bus stop 5.

The trip to Vesuvius and Pompei was excellent, with great guides at both locations.

As self guided walkers we missed out on some information such as the bbq evenin (until it happened), and receiving info about our transfer from the hotel back to the airport. We were not on the drivers list!

Carmen was very helpful.

Martin Ashcroft, 26 Aug 2023

Wonderful holiday and really well organised Thank you very much and look forward to our next holiday.

Patrick Curran, 5 Aug 2023

Accomadation and food very good . Hotel staff very helpful. Headwater staff very helpful organising the holiday

Andrea Frame, 8 Jul 2023

This is a great holiday for people who have a good fitness level. The walks take longer than stated as the scenery is so magical

HUNT, 20 May 2023

An enjoyable holiday with stunning scenery but the walks were somewhat more difficult than indicated due to the number and height of the steps involved. We particularly enjoyed the Tre Calle walk. Trying to use local buses was often impossible and we had to resort to taxis on a couple of occasions. The hotel was very good but is dominated by large groups if you are on a self guided holiday.

MICKEL, 20 May 2023

Amalfi Coast is overcrowded so be aware of this.

COUSTICK, 13 May 2023

A lovely hotel with excellent staff who were both helpful and knowledgeable. We really enjoyed the walks as they were interesting and varied. The Headwater app was brilliant at keeping us on track. We visited both Pompeii and Herculaneum because we visited the latter on our way to the airport - it would have been helpful to have known that that was a possibility when we booked.

Mrs Clark, 1 Apr 2023

We had a great time - lovely area, comfortable hotel and amazing walks. It was great to stay in an authentic Italian village free from tourist traps.

Mrs Stanley-Adams, 1 Oct 2022

Very enjoyable overall. The hotel was excellent apart from their billing system which conflated my bill with another couple. The scenery was beautiful but the difficulty of the walks was understated and we did not find the App helpful. More guidance is need on how to deal with an emergency situation whilst walking as access would be difficult. The written walk notes were very detailed and accurate, except for the walk from Amalfi to Ravello.

Ms Stewart, 3 Sep 2022

For a walking holiday, be very sure you are a strong, able walker. The walk grading is very misleading.

Mrs Young, 3 Sep 2022

Great place to visit with nice walks and places to visit - would particularly recommend Ravello. Food was varied and good in hotel and Geraldo looked after us very well.

Mr Williams, 4 Jun 2022

Excellent walking holiday, but be prepared for lots of steps! I would recommend to use the private transfer as there is a limited train service on a Saturday. The Hotel Due Torri was excellent and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful.

Ms TURNER, 14 May 2022

Headwater arranged our train travel from London to Naples. Whilst we have arranged journeys like that before, it was much easier having them do it. The app was great for our self-guided walks. The thing that really made our activities work so well was the advice from Gerardo in the hotel. He advised which day to go where according to the weather and also the May 1st Public Holiday. He helped us organise a trip to Paestum (really recommend that). The hotel was very comfortable and staff were both friendly and efficient.

The slight downside to our trip was buses. Although we were very happy to stay just off the coast, getting the bus back to Bomerano each day is quite difficult. There were days when not everyone got on. We often had to stand on a very crowded bus - not easy when waiting for a hip replacement. We were asked if we would share out transfer to Naples. We were happy to do this but were then told the time would change to suit the others as we had over 2 hours at the station.

Mrs Day, 30 Apr 2022

Beautiful location, very welcoming family run hotel, great walking area. Level 2 for activity is right but guests should know several walks include long periods of ascent/descent using steps rather than paths. It is very hard on the knees.

Mrs Hunter, 12 Mar 2022

The hotel is a good, friendly, little family hotel. It's in a town so the views are more of surrounding buildings than of the distant hills [a top floor room might have been better]. The scenery on the walks is wonderful. Weather in February was mixed. It was a perfect walking temperature but there were a couple of days when there was a fair bit of mist, and one very rainy day. Overall I'm very glad that we went.

Mr Ridges, 12 Feb 2022

The trip was well organised and instructions clear.
