TRIP DESCRIPTION

Set on an archipelago of fourteen islands, connected by 53 bridges, Stockholm is aptly nicknamed 'Venice of the North'. Wherever you look you are bound to find water. Over the summer months it rarely gets dark during the nights, and the weather is pleasantly warm.

During this single centred bike tour you head out each day from your base to experience the Swedish capital city and explore its beautiful archipelago. Discover World Cultural Heritage, nature, a broad variety of museums and culinary highlights with visits to Vaxholm, Drottningholm Palace, Saltsjobaden and Djurgarden.

Terrain

You cycle mostly on bike paths and gravel roads as well as forest tracks and side roads with less traffic through typical Swedish nature. To some extent there are simpler trail conditions with raw gravel. Flat to slightly hilly tour course.

Day 2: Drottningholm Palace (50km/31.1mi)

Along Lake Malar, Sweden's third largest lake you cycle to UNESCO world cultural heritage Drottningholm Palace. Here, on the shore of the lake, the royal family grew up. Take your time to explore the beautiful palace as well as the Chinese Pavilion dating from the 18th century. You continue your tour across bridges on to the island of Sodermalm. You also pass the old town of Stockholm, Gamla Stan with its cobblestone alleys and inviting coffee shops and the island of Skeppsholmen with an impressive modern art sculpture garden.

Day 3: Vaxholm (35km/21.7mi)

A stay in Stockholm should include a visit to the archipelago. Therefore today's bike tour brings you to Vaxholm, the idyllic small town which is also known as 'capital of the archipelago'. Look forward to nice restaurants, small shops, an impressive fortress from the 16th century as well as a lively boating culture. The ferry back to Stockholm (not included) departs regularly and takes about an hour.

Day 4: Saltsjobaden (45km/28.0mi)

Today's tour leads you to Skogskyrkogarden (woodland cemetery), which according to UNESCO is an outstanding example for the merge of architecture and landscape. Learn more about the cemetery in the visitor centre or book a guided tour (not included). Your goal is the idyllic bathing village of Saltsjobaden before you return to Stockholm.

Day 5: Stockholm National City Park (45km/28.0mi)

Look forward to nature as far as the eye can see! In the morning a diversified choice of museums is awaiting you on the island of Djurgarden. Visit the Nordic museum or Vasa museum, those who prefer it more interactive pass by at Junibacken (the Astrid Lindgren museum) or the ABBA museum. You will also pass Skansen, the world's oldest open-air museum as well as art museum Prinz Eugens Waldemarsudde. Afterwards you continue your bike tour to the North where Palace Ulriksdal is awaiting you.

The sales staff go above and beyond to organise the holiday you want. We have just booked our 4th Headwater holiday and nothing was too much for Megan, looking at different start days, adding extra nights and finding the best price flights. Brilliant!

Mark Stead, 25 Oct 2023

Stephanie was very responsive and thought about the experience that our family wanted to have and made suggestions to enhance the holiday as a result. I can't wait!
