Swedish Activity Week

  • Multi-activity adventure in Swedish Lapland
  • Snowmobile excursion on frozen sea
  • Northern lights snowshoe walk
  • Dogsledding through pristine forests
  • Candle light dinner in remote Aurora Hideaway

On the frozen shores of the Lulea Archipelago in the Gulf of Bothnia, lies Pine Bay Lodge, our home for a week of exciting winter activities. Our premium accommodation is a small boutique hotel in the classic Swedish Red Cottage style.

In this region of Sweden the sea can freeze up to a metre thick, while the tidal currents of the Baltic Sea creates an exciting backdrop of broken pack ice, sometimes several metres high. During the week we will travel by snowmobile out into the bay to experience this amazing natural phenomenon. On other days we enjoy more traditional, Arctic activities including ice-fishing, a husky safari through the forest, and a snowshoe hike through pristine forests in search of the awe-inspiring northern lights.

This is a perfect week of activities for those looking to get into a remote corner of this beautiful region of Sweden.

Weather: Temperatures should remain below 0°C for the whole season, however recent years have had some unexpected fluctuations, both warmer and colder. The lowest temperature in 2008 was -40°C and the warmest was +8°C, just a few weeks apart. Generally, you should expect much colder temperatures in December and January, around -35°C to -25°C. As the days get longer the temperatures rise to around freezing point by April.

Daylight hours: As we are inside the Arctic Circle, from 01 December to 07 January the sun remains just below the horizon during the day. But it is not dark - there is plenty of reflection from the snow - expect 4-5 hours of daylight. At the end of January daylight hours increase to 6-7. In February there are 10 hours and in March, 15 hours.

Northern Lights: The stunning Aurora Borealis are one of nature's most awe-inspiring sights, and seeing them hover above us on a cold winter's night is an experience never to be forgotten. Scientists will tell you the Northern Lights occur 'when solar wind particles collide with air molecules in the earth's atmosphere, transferring their energy into light. The 'season' runs from October to March. Within this window, the slightly better months are October, February and March. During periods of high solar activity (not forecastable) they can often be seen every night, but the sky has to be clear of cloud cover, and you need to be away from other light sources. Displays can vary in intensity - from a greenish-yellow glow moving gently around the sky, to a spectacular multi-coloured show dancing across the heavens. Sightings not only vary in intensity but in duration too, from just minutes to sometimes hours.

Day 2: Nordic winter skills

Winter in Swedish Lapland is made comfortable by learning how to dress and behave in the cold Sub-arctic climate. You will be provided with warm outdoor clothing and strap on snowshoes. Our guides will take you on a 3 hour journey into the nearby forests and lead you through an adventurous and educational excursion. Here you will learn how to make a fire and cook some coffee, before heading deeper into the forest to learn about the nature around us. We finish with a typical wilderness lunch in a traditional Sami tent.

The afternoon is free for an optional excursion or you may choose to relax back at the lodge after a busy start to our trip.

Day 3: Snowmobile, free afternoon, aurora hideaway dinner

Winter in Swedish Lapland is made comfortable by learning how to dress and behave in the cold Sub-arctic climate. You will be provided with warm outdoor clothing and strap on snowshoes. Our guides will take you on a 3-hour journey into the nearby forests and lead you through an adventurous and educational excursion. Here you will learn how to make a fire and cook some coffee, before heading deeper into the forest to learn about the nature around us. We finish with a barbecue lunch near the lake.

The afternoon is free for an optional excursion or you may choose to relax back at the lodge after a busy start to our trip.

Day 4: Dogsledding

Today we drive out to a local husky kennel for a fantastic adventure with these beautiful dogs. First we learn to control the husky team (as they are known) before driving them out into the forest and across the frozen lakes. You will drive the sledge yourself swapping with a partner halfway.

We return to the lodge around 1pm for lunch followed by some free time for an optional excursion, before hopefully seeing the Northern Lights right outside. In the evening we also visit a local astronomer and will learn of his passion for stargazing and photography.

Day 5: Icefishing

With a reindeer-hide over your shoulder we head out together on the big snowmobile with our guide for two hours of ice-fishing on the frozen sea near Pine Bay Lodge. We drill a hole in the ice, which is sometimes over a metre thick! We then start fishing, a normal catch would be perch or sometimes pike. Lunch is also included, but don't worry we'll provide extra if you don't catch 'the big one'!

The afternoon is free for some optional excursions or some relaxation at the lodge and sauna.

Day 6: Free Day

Today is free for you to enjoy one of the longer excursions such as the popular Hovercraft Pack Ice Tour which involves a journey across the ice-covered landscape with the goal to reach the pack ice fields of the outer archipelago. Alternatively you may choose to relax at the lodge and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of this beautiful setting.

In the evening, after dinner, we head out on snowshoes to try and catch the Northern Lights one last time; stopping for a hot beverage along the way to warm up.

Day 7: Leave Lulea

Transfer to Lulea After breakfast we will be transferred back to Lulea Airport. Flight time permitting, we will make a quick stop in Gammelstad Church Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, consisting of 424 wood built houses dating back to the 15th century. Flights to London are via Stockholm.

Notes: A mixed activity week for adults, with a good selection of guided activities and free time for independent excursion or relaxation. None of the activities require previous experience. A reasonable level of fitness is required for this trip. Temperatures in this part of Sweden can drop as low as -30 degrees centigrade. You should come prepared for such extremes - although winter clothing for activities is provided, you are expected to come well prepared for it to be very cold.
