TRIP DESCRIPTION

The volcanic Canary Islands offer a sunny climate even in the winter, with glorious flowers, balmy temperatures and majestic scenery. The mini continent of Gran Canaria, so called because of its diversity of landscape, from lush green forests and valleys, towering mountains, desert like dunes and white sandy beaches. La Palma, nicknamed La Isla Bonita (the pretty Isle), is smaller and again features a vast amount of diverse scenery, from dense cloud forest to volcanic landscapes with twisted rock formations and black sand beaches.

On this 7 night holiday you experience the best of both islands and the diversity of the incredible landscapes. In Gran Canaria, you walk through evergreen canyons with jungle-like vegetation, citrus groves with heady scents of lemons and oranges and explore the pretty town of Firgas with its stepped promenade waterfall. Discover the peaks of Gran Canaria with magnificent views all around and the Roque Nublo, an enormous monolith known as an emblem of the island before descending through pine forests filled with local broom.

After your flight to La Palma, you can take a short walk in the dense prehistoric laurel forest and on your full days walking in La Palma, the routes are all about the volcanos and of course, the views. Your walks ascend and descend around the volcanic landscape with magnificent views over the Caldera craters and pass through volcanic ash fields and pine forests. Walk towards the centre of the crater; the Caldera de Taburiente, passing ancient tobacco plantations as you descend to the Playa de Taburiente, perhaps take the opportunity to catch your breath before continuing along the Angustias gorge. From the highest point on the island the Roque de Muchachos you'll descend along the Caldera rim with imposing cliffs and more spectacular views passing the impressive basaltic dam; Pared de Roberto and Degollada de Franceses with lookouts over both sides of the island.

Perfectly located to explore the capital cities of each island, on this twin centre holiday. In Gran Canaria your hotel is ideally situated to explore the cosmopolitan capital city of the island; Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, your 3* hotel is located just a two minute walk from Las Canteras beach and with excellent local facilities nearby. In the capital of La Palma; Santa Cruz de la Palma, your hotel sits on the beachfront just a short walk from the city centre with its centuries old architecture, cobbled streets and busy port.

Please note routes may vary dependent on the recent volcanic activity on the island.

REVIEWS

Overall it was a good trip with the exception of the 1st walk Firgas to Firgas - see my earlier comments under Health and Safety. This route needs clearing and the paths in the canyon need clearer marking. This was of course the first days walking of the trip and using the new and unfamiliar navigation. I'm an experienced walker and found this excessively challenging, I would be concerned for an inexperienced walker following this route as it is at the moment. As I said earlier, I lost so much time fighting through the dense and overgrown valley floor, plus going wrong from time to time, I was unable to complete the route and had to just follow the road back to Firgas for the taxi pick-up. Plus I, and my gear was covered with mud and scratches right from the beginning of the trip.

My experience on La Palma was much happier. I thought it a lovely island. The walks were very good and the way marking was very clear. The Crater Rim walk from Roque los Muchachos was a particular highlight.
