We're here to help

If you've any questions about this holiday call our sales team on 1-800-567-6286 , or email info@breakaway-adventures.com

Exploring the stunning wild countryside of the Galway/Mayo regions of western Ireland, where very little has changed over the centuries, Connemara's haunting landscapes will capture your imagination just as they have done many artists'. On this 8-night trip you'll discover a mystical land of loughs, bogs and beautiful lakes, as well as one of the islands, Inishbofin, which sits remote and wonderful in the wild and windswept Atlantic.

Starting in Westport along the Western Way, you'll pass shimmering loughs, waterfalls and Ireland's only true fjord, Killary Harbour. Enjoy scenic walks through forests and mountain views as you walk beneath the Maumturks mountains and Ben Gorm. Then, spend two nights on Inishbofin Island, where history and heritage combine to create a tranquil yet busy atmosphere. Although around only 180 people live there, arts and music is frequent throughout the year, and there is always a festival of some sort to attend. And with some great looped walks, it's the perfect opportunity to take some fantastic photographs of the wild Atlantic scenery, award-winning beaches and fascinating birdlife.

Food is fast becoming an attraction in the area, with rich local produce and delicious freshly-caught seafood. Try the wonderful large mussels and river-caught trout and salmon, or the exquisite lamb. Over the first weekend of October, Inishbofin has its own food festival, Bia Bo Finne. Of course, Guinness is everywhere, but local craft beers, gins and whiskies are also becoming increasingly popular.

We stay in a nice mix of hotels; a *** charming town hotel, a fjord-side spa hotel, a former grand fishing lodge and a relaxing island hotel, complete with spa.

Day-by-day itinerary

Walking information

Walks are well marked paths, with a mix of gravel, stone, forest and hard packed earth. Walking boots are essential especially for sections that can at times be muddy.

Day 1 Arrive in Westport

Check in to the centrally-located hotel and pick from one of the many restaurants or even the chic bistro of the hotel for dinner (payable locally). (Staying at the Clew Bay Hotel, Breakfast only)

Day 2 Westport to Leenane 15km/9.5mi/5hr

Set off along the Western Way. Enjoy stunning views as you pass Lough Lugacolliwee, shimmering Lough Tawnyard, and follow a riverside trail through the valley. Arrive at the rushing Aasleagh Falls then continue into Leenane, sitting on the bay of Killary Harbour (Ireland's fjord) and your hotel. (Staying at the Leenane Hotel, Half Board)

Day 3 At Leenane

The little village sits at the bay on the fjord, perhaps take a lift up to the harbour and take a cruise on the fjord, or jump on the bus to Kylemore Abbey or Connemara National Park to walk the impressive Diamond Hill. Before dinner, maybe try a seaweed bath in the hotel. (Staying at the Leenane Hotel, Half Board)

Day 4 Leenane to Lough Inagh 17km/11mi/5.5hr

Follow a shepherds' trail above the fjord for stunning views out to sea, before dropping down on through a forest trail. A stunning path opens out as you dissect the Maumturks mountains and Ben Gorm, one of the Twelve Bens. (Staying at Lough Inagh Lodge, Half Board)

Day 5 At Lough Inagh

From your beautiful lodge, pick a short or longer loop walk along the lough, or walk up Mamean, a local pilgrimage trail, to a pretty mountain chapel. Tonight we leave you to decide between the 4-course menu or to sample the bar menu at the hotel (payable locally). (Staying at Lough Inagh Lodge, Breakfast only)

Day 6 Lough Inagh to Inishbofin Island 8km/5mi/2hr

Today we transfer you to the little harbour at Cleggan to take the 30-minute ferry to beautiful Inishbofin. After checking in, you could walk the west end loop to see the impressive stags and enjoy fantastic views over the smaller island. (Staying at the Inishbofin House Hotel & Marine Spa, Half Board)

Day 7 At Inishbofin Island 14km/9mi/4hr

Head to the east of the island today, where small lanes take you to a stunning shepherds' trail that crosses a lunar-esque landscape, passing tiny loughs and with beautiful views of the Atlantic. Heading north, you can visit Inishturk and Clare Island. You can also walk to Cromwell's ruined castle or take a kayak trip around the harbour. Inishbofin is beautiful, and has less than 200 inhabitants. In October, the island holds its own food festival too! (Staying at the Inishbofin House Hotel & Marine Spa, Breakfast only)

Day 8 Inishbofin to Westport

Take the lunch-time boat after walking the mid island loop, which takes you to the island's highest point. We meet you at Cleggan to transfer you to Westport; from here you can follow the trail along the river to Westport Quay for great views of Clew Bay, before heading out to eat in one of Westport's many restaurants (payable locally). (Staying at the Clew Bay Hotel, Breakfast only)

Day 9 Leave Westport

Leave Westport, or perhaps have a couple of extra nights in the lively town. There is beautiful greenway that runs from Achill Island.
