Brenner Pass to Venice Cycling

  • Breathtaking views and variety of landscapes as you cycle from the mountains to the sea
  • Stay in Verona, the birthplace of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and Vicenza, renowned for classical Palladio architecture
  • Renaissance architecture and waterside palaces in Venice.

A wonderful bike tour through ever-changing scenery takes you from the mountainous Austrian border at the Brenner Pass to finish on the medieval streets of Venice on the Adriatic: your route starts mainly downhill through ancient villages and the green meadows of South Tyrol and continues along the Adige River into the Veneto region to arrive at the sparkling shores of Lake Garda. Further on you will discover Verona, the town of Romeo & Juliet, with its impressive Roman arena, and Vicenza full of classical Palladian architecture. Then you will reach the rolling Euganean Hills and their renowned thermal district, the largest in Europe; beautiful Padua, cradle of arts, will lead you to the Venetian lagoon.

There are plenty of opportunities for breaks along the way to explore Baroque castles, ornate cathedrals and mountain fortresses and stop for snacks amid beautiful scenery. Each of the medieval villages, historic market towns and cities you visit are different, from the 1100-year-old town of Bressanone with its cobbled streets and arcades to the wine village of Ora, surrounded by vineyards and apple orchards; the ancient Roman remains, museums and palazzi of Trento and Padua with its vast 13th Century Basilica of St Anthony, all culminating at the World Heritage city of Venice on the Adriatic coast.

Day 1: Arrive in Innsbruck

Arrive in Innsbruck, a city with elegant architecture and majestic alpine views.

Day 2: Brenner Pass to Bressanone (55km/34.2mi)

A transfer takes you to the Brenner Pass, on the border with Austria from where your cycle route starts. Cycle along an old train line into the green Isarco Valley and to the medieval village of Vipiteno. Continue through pretty villages and green meadows to Fortezza, where you will see the ancient fort, built at the time of the Austrian empire. Continue to Lake Varna, a protected nature reserve before reaching Bressanone, dominated by its ornate 18th century baroque cathedral.
Breakfast included

Day 3: Bressanone to Bolzano (45km/28.0mi)

The Isarco River leads you out of Bressanone. The cycle tracks today hug the river, at times you are almost above the river, as you meander along the edge. Take time to stop in impressive Chiusa, a medieval town with narrow streets and little art and craft shops. Standing above the town on a rocky-outcrop is the impressive Castel Sabbiona, a Benedictine monastery. Criss-cross the river on cycle tracks before heading into Bolzano.
Breakfast included

Day 4: Bolzano to Trento (65km/40.4mi or 70km/43.5mi)

Today you will mainly cycle alongside the Adige River, on the Wine Route through a landscape of orchards and vineyards. Stop on route in the villages of Ora, Egna and Salorno. Scenic pathways lead onward to Trento, set in a wide glacial valley guarded by the towering peaks of the Dolomites.
Breakfast included

Day 5: Trento to Lake Garda (50km/31.1mi)

Your route continues along the Adige to reach Rovereto. Ascend to the Passo di San Giovanni to enjoy fabulous views to Lake Garda, the largest lake in Italy. Descend towards the lake and take the ferry to the southern shore to stay in either Peschiera or Desenzano.
Breakfast included

Day 6: Lake Garda to Verona (35km/21.7mi)

Cycle through open countryside to reach today's destination, Verona. Visit the 1st century Roman Arena, one of the largest in Italy and which still hosts concerts and the Opera Festival. Stroll below Juliet's house with its honey coloured stone balcony and ascend the Torre dei Lamberti for views across the city.
Breakfast included

Day 7: Verona to Vicenza (35km/21.7mi or 70km/43.5mi)

Your route today takes you though vineyards and to the castle of Soave before reaching the Berici hills. Reach Vicenza where the old city centre is characterized by the beautiful private palaces and public buildings by Andrea Palladio, the famous 16th century architect. It is possible to shorten the stage by taking the train in San Bonifacio.
Breakfast included

Day 8: Vicenza to the Padua Thermal District (50km/31.1mi)

Leaving Vicenza you will come first to the Palladian Villa Rotonda and its gardens. Cycling along the Bacchiglione river, the route continues towards the scenic landscape of the Euganean hills, the biggest European thermal resort.
Breakfast included

Day 9: Padua Thermal District to Mestre/Venice (55km/34.2mi)

Pedal along the Battaglia Canal to Padua where the university dates to 1222. Follow the Piovego canal, and then the Brenta Canal past ancient villas to Mestre, Venice's mainland. Check-in to your hotel and then head out to visit the 'Floating City'.
Breakfast included

Day 10: Leave Mestre

Hotels, Italy

We use a variety of 3 and 4-star hotels and inns throughout with en-suite facilities. They may be located either in the towns themselves or in the surrounding countryside. Please note that the accommodation is usually located within walking distance to the centres of the towns (i.e. 15-20 mins walk). All prices are based on 2 persons sharing, so if there is an odd number of people travelling in your party or you are travelling alone, there will be a compulsory supplement for a single room for the tour duration. For a solo traveller there is an additional charge to cover transfer costs. Our hotels usually serve a continental breakfast with a varied buffet. However, in some hotels you may find the typical Italian breakfast, consisting of a hot drink (cappuccino, coffee or tea), fresh pastries such as cakes, croissants, or toast and jam.

Reviews

Everyone who goes on a Headwater holiday will be emailed a link to our post-holiday questionnaire where they can give us an honest assessment of all aspects of their holiday - everything from how quickly we answer the phone to how clean the hotels were - plus an overall rating and comments about their holiday.

Any feedback collected is posted to our website, so that people can make an informed decision based on past experiences before heading off on holiday. We don’t edit the reviews, the only thing we do is proofread them and alter any typos, where necessary, to ensure they are easy to read for everyone. All reviews will be published (except in certain extreme circumstances), and a member of the Headwater team will respond to any constructive criticisms/comments under the reviews, at their discretion. So, for the real tales, twists and turns of our holidays, look no further than the reviews from our previous travellers.

ANDERSON, 25/05/2023

Our holiday got off to a poor start with and a minibus driver who wanted to drop us off in the wrong place ! But once we got to Brenner we enjoyed some great cycling on smooth , traffic free cycle paths. The changing scenery from the Dolomites through to the Venetian plains was stunning with many miles along the River Adige, past vineyards in the Soave region and finally along canals and past magnificent villas as we approached Venice. There were many castles and other places of interest to visit en route and whilst the excellent guide book gave good descriptions of these there was no guidance in the 'Ride with GPS app' as to how to find them. All the cities we stayed at would have been worth spending longer in , but the guide book gave good descriptions of the highlights and useful tips on where to eat. The cycling was well described to help choose hillier or flatter options, but the hilly route from Verona to Vincenza was challenging. Overall a great trip.

RATHBONE, 18/05/2023

Our first time with Headwater and on E bikes, initially with trepidation, then after working out how to use the map app etc, we rarely got lost and really enjoyed the mix of exertion, scenery, culture, food and wine!
