Salzburg & the Lakes Short Break Cycling

  • Start in Salzburg and finish on Lake Mondsee
  • Exceptional lake and riverside routes
  • Vibrant green meadows, postcard pretty villages and beautiful mountain scenery

This 4 night cycle route really packs a punch as it takes you from the heart of Salzburg city, with its wealth of beautiful old buildings, including cathedrals, palaces and a fortress, through lovely meadows and villages into the beautiful Austrian Lake District. You will cycle alongside four of the Lakes in the area and have some amazing views of the beautiful mountain scenery.

Although you only have time for a small taste of this stunning area, you will experience majestic Bad Ischl, where Kaiser Franz Josef and his family spent their summers, pretty St Gilgen, where Mozart's mother was born and not forgetting Mondsee with its beautiful Basilika, made famous by appearing in the wedding scene in 'The Sound of Music'.

Day 1: Arrive in Salzburg

Day 2: Salzburg to Mondsee 37km/23.5mi

For today's ride out of Salzburg, you will mostly follow the Mozart cycle route on dedicated cycle paths but with some of the route on minor back roads. The cycle path first heads north, following the river Salzach, before turning off to go through the outskirts of Salzburg and then up through vibrant green meadows, passing villages, following the route of the former Ischlerbahn railway line to Unzing (near Eugendorf). Continue on the Mozart cycle route to Thalgau and then out onto St Lorenz plain, where you will have impressive views of the Drachenwand rock wall on your way into Mondsee.

Day 3: Mondsee to Bad Ischl 41km/26mi

A lovely route today, following the scenic shore of Mondsee with views across to the Drachenwand, an amazing rock face that towers above the lake. You might then choose to take a little detour to pretty Unterach, which was a favourite of Gustav Klimts, and where he drew his inspiration for many of his paintings. Your route then takes you along the shores of stunning Attersee, the largest lake in the area. From there follow alongside the stream up through the beautiful wooded valley with glimpses of the impressive Hollengebirge mountains, to Mitterweibenbach. Here you follow the cycle route, with a short downhill section on road, before riding alongside the river on a cycle path into Bad Ischl.

Day 4: Bad Ischl to Mondsee 43km/27mi

Today's route takes you west along the river, on quiet inland roads to the lovely lakeside village of Strobl. Here you can extend the day by taking an optional 9km detour along the northern edge of the lake to St Wolfgang, an historic pilgrim's town, renowned for its beautiful 15th century church. From Strobl, a dedicated cycle path next to Lake Wolfgang takes you to St Gilgen, an attractive town famed for being the birthplace of Mozart's mother. From there continue on the cycle route to pass the beautiful little lake Krottensee, then alongside the shore of Mondsee back to Mondsee itself.

Day 5: Depart
