TRIP DESCRIPTION

This 7-night, self-guided holiday is excellent for relaxation and exploration of the Amalfi Coast at your own pace.

Based in the sleepy village of Bomerano, perfectly positioned between Positano and Amalfi, and the starting point of the region's most famous walk, the Path of the Gods, it's the perfect setting for a week's walking, away from the bustle of its more famous neighbours.

We offer a selection of walks with superb coastal vistas daily, as you make your way through scented lemon groves and terraced vineyards to the whitewashed houses of Amalfi, ascend Monte Calli to one of the best vantage points on the coast for incredible 360 degree views and wind your way though atmospheric cobbled streets and alleyways to enchanting Ravello, with its exotic formal gardens framing the glittering Mediterranean beyond.

The highlight of the week is the Path of the Gods, where you traverse the ancient hillside along an impossibly panoramic trail to Positano's chic pastel houses and enticing pebble beach.

Staying in 4* comfort at the welcoming, family run Hotel le Rocce in central Bomerano, there is time for a longer excursion to the island of Capri, or just to relax by the glittering pool and drink in those amazing views from the hotel's terrace. For your evening meals you can choose to sample the hotel's specialities or select one of the enticing restaurants in the village (all payable locally).

Terrain

This holiday follows stone steps, coastal paths and some forest trails, some of which are rocky and uneven in places. You need to be a fit and confident walker, as the frequent ascents and descents, particularly on the coastal paths, are steep in places and make this a more demanding holiday than the distances suggest. On the Path of the Gods, guests with a fear of heights may have problems with certain sections. Walkers with knee problems may have difficulty descending the stone steps and walking poles are strongly recommended.

Day 2: Amalfi (9km/5.6mi)

From your hotel, it's a steady descent past vine terraces and rugged cliffs, with a constant and impressive backdrop of impossibly azure seas, to seaside Amalfi. Wander its narrow alleyways, discover its compact marina and quaint shops packed with local produce and admire its 9th century Duomo.

Day 3: Praiano (10km/6.2mi)

Start the day on the Path of the Gods, making your way to the spectacular view point at Colle Serra, before branching off and descending on a coastal path to the charming village of Praiano. A panoramic lunch perhaps, before returning by bus via Amalfi or heading uphill back to Bomerano via the Convent di San Domenico - your reward on a clear day are truly spectacular views of the village of Vettica Maggiore, Positano, Capri and Li Galli.

Day 4: Monte Tre Calli Walk (10km/6.2mi)

Head for the mountains today towards the highest peaks of the Amalfi Coast, blessed with arguably the most far-reaching vistas. From the outskirts of Bomerano, follow an uphill path through chestnut woods towards the summit of Monte Tre Calli with its unrivalled 360-degree views of the rugged coastline and azure seas beyond, and the island of Capri visible in the distance. It's a scenic walk along the ridge, through grassland and woodland to a natural rock formation known as Il Fungo, 'The Mushroom', before you descend back to Bomerano via the Belvedere di Paipo, with its magical views.

Day 5: Free Day

It's tempting to spend the day relaxing by the hotel's pool but it would be a shame not to explore further afield. Options today include heading to Amalfi and hopping on a hydrofoil to the elegant island of Capri.

Day 6: Amalfi to Ravello (7km/4.3mi)

Take the bus to Amalfi then follow the path that hugs the coastline to perfectly preserved Atrani, a charming little town with narrow lanes and a serene town square. Then it's uphill through a warren of tiny streets to Ravello and the 11th century Villa Rufolo, once a papal residence and later the home of Richard Wagner, and Villa Cimbrone, a sumptuous 19th century mansion with fabulous gardens and unequalled views over the Gulf of Salerno. Return via the Torre dello Zirro to Amalfi and bus back to Bomerano.

Day 7: Path of the Gods to Positano (10km/6.2mi)

Set off from Bomerano along the Path of the Gods, the highlight of the week's trekking and the region's most famous walk, offering views all the way along the peninsula, with Capri's famous Faraglioni cliffs marking 'land's end'. There's a choice of picnic spots with stunning views of glittering seas dotted with pleasure boats as you continue onwards past lemon groves and brigands' treasure troves to the mountain village of Nocelle. Then it's down through lush terraces to the steep, narrow streets of pastel-coloured Positano.

Day 8: Leave Bomerano
