TERRAIN
Vesuvius - The length of the walk is around 4km in total. The maximum altitude you will reach is approximately 1,175m with 170-250m of elevation. The ground will be uneven so sturdy walking shoes are highly recommended.

It's just 50 minutes on the train to the ancient town of Herculaneum, a remarkably well-preserved site buried by the same eruption that also destroyed Pompeii. Smaller than its famous neighbour, you can join a tour (payable locally) where the guide offers a deeper, more detailed look into daily Roman life. Walk past elegant villas and ancient baths, many with their original mosaics, wooden structures and frescoes still intact.

It's tempting to relax on the hotel's private pebble beach and drink in the sea views over to Mount Vesuvius, but it would be a shame not to explore the island of Ischia, which is only 50 minutes away on the hydrofoil. Explore the Old Town and bustling fishing harbour at Ischia Ponte, overlooked by its imposing Aragonese castle - it's the perfect spot for a panoramic lunch.
