Striking active volcanoes, black beaches, thermal springs, and a stunning cobalt sea make the Aeolians Islands a unique must-see destination. Exploring the varied landscape by boat and on foot is without doubt the best way to take in the natural beauty and contrasts of this part of Sicily. During the week we trek on the archipelago’s best islands: Lipari, with its archaeological ruins and lively harbour, Vulcano, with its craters and famous fumaroles, and fiery Stromboli, which will hopefully greet us with spectacular shows of its explosive activity. The trip culminates with a memorable trek on the famous Mount Etna, the highest and most active volcano in Europe.

REVIEWS

Beautiful islands and luckily we had some good volcanic activity, especially on Etna which made up for not being able to climb to the top of any of the volcanoes Vulcano, Stromboli or Etna, however I do feel the itinerary could be improved.

Excellent guide and great sites, especially Stromboli. Watching volcanic activity after dark along with a fabulous sunset.

Will be an unforgettable trip for me..watching. the live volcanoes was out of this world...while I knew it was a volcanoes trip rightly or wrongly I didn't expect that we'd see live volcanoes (thought it would be a big bonus if we did)..and of course the Gods had it all planned for us as Etna erupted too while we were there!.

A wonderful journey through north east Sicily and four Aeolian islands, mired only by some poor weather conditions at key stages of the trip. Our group of 15 got on well throughout and were unfazed by the challenges set by the weather.

A great trip with some interesting hikes and lots of volcano information topped by the fantastic hike to Stromboli summit. After the quite tough trek we were rewarded with an amazing display from the old crater looking down onto the current active craters.

Unfortunately we could not go to the summit of Etna due to bad weather and the lower level trek seemed a disappointment after Stromboli.

Quite a lot of time to rest and sample local life between walks.

Hotels were good apart from Catania which was poor and would have been better to be based in Lipari town as nothing was open on a Monday night in May in Cantena.

Unreal trip. First ever trekking holiday I have been on and it was perfect. Literally can’t say a bad word about this trip. From the amazing scenery, challenging walks, watching active volcanos do its thing to the culture and history of Sicily itself, couldn’t have asked for a better trip.

The group were inspirational, Benoit our guide, knowledgeable and passionate about showing us all the highlights possible and making sure we were having a great time.

Perfect intro into trekking and hiking.

Great trip, good variety while sticking to the Volcano theme, great food. As a new walker I had some concerns about the walking but the pace was well measured and the support and preparation guide excellent.

Greatly structured trip, with a lot of varied trips and sights. Genny, our guide, was amazing - superb customer service!

Excellent brake saw lots great experiance

If you are not already in awe of the power of nature this trip will remind you who is in charge.

Getting close to these amazing natural features, feeling the heat and smelling the sulphur is an experience well worth the effort.

Beautiful with stunning scenery, history and geology - and that was just the group!.

This was a great holiday with a good size group (10 people). I wouldn't have liked many more. Marco our guide was excellent. The trip notes were good but could perhaps be more accurate abound the difficulty leve and the need to sign safety waivers for Stromboli and Etna. We had group members who I think expected that they would be able to do the climbs but realised after Vulcan that it was beyond them. Also we had a couple who were not experienced trekkers and were a bit taken aback at the difficulty level although they persevered and made the climbs.

My husband and I are from the other side of the world and our primary reason for being in Europe during June was to go cycling. When my husband suggested we follow our cycling holiday up with a walking trip to see the Sicilian volcanoes my first thought was - meh (shoulder shrug and lack of interest). How wrong I was. I really enjoyed the trip. It was my favourite week or our four week holiday. The trip was extremely well organised; the volcanoes fascinating, the accommodation good value and the walks varied and interesting. We also had a nice group of fellow travellers. We developed a good camaraderie over the week and that added to our enjoyment of the trip.

This was a great trip. Everyone got on well, the hotels and food were very good and the weather very kind. The walking was quite strenuous in the heat but an attentive leader made sure everyone was ok. The trip was especially interesting for anyone interested in geology (like me). Vulcano and Stromboli were excellent destinations to see volcanic action. Etna was a little disappointing because of low cloud and I ducked the summit trek which proved to be a wise move as the alternative walk on the lava flows was very interesting. Stromboli's summit was very atmospheric (literally) with plenty of smoke, fire and dust. But well worth the effort.

This was a very good well organised trip. Saw a lot in a short time. Some of the walks can be strenuous in the heat so look at the time of year you go

The flights to Catania were late both ways going out to scicily this had a massive impact as we didn’t get to the hotel until the early hours, up after 4 hours sleep onto a ferry then walking up Vulcano in the midday sun was hard work.

The hotels were all very good , lots to eat at breakfast to set you up for the day. The only hotel with limited breakfast was the last one very basic but the location makes up for it

The hotel in Catania for the last evening was very well situated however booking out was at 1030 but the return flight is not until late evening that meant about 11 hours to kill which was a bit draining to say the least. You’re allowed to leave your luggage but exodus should consider arranging earlier flights. Home .

Had a fantastic time. Great guide, very knowledgable and very competent, lovely group and some good challenging activities.

Accommodation and food was good to excellent.

Had the most fabulous meal at the home of an Sicilian family; all produce from garden, including home made wine.

What an action packed week!

A perfectly planned trip......it went like clockwork but with enough rest and recovery times.

Accurate trip notes ensured that we were prepared with fitness levels and correct equipment.

We found the food rather bland however - but the carbs came in handy for the hikes!

I would highly recommend this trip to anyone who has an interest in volcanoes and likes steep unique walks.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time on the Exodus tour to Sicily and the Aeolian islands. This was my first ever tour with Exodus and was therefore not quite sure what to expect. Our guides Federica and Marco met us at the airport and were very friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgable. I enjoyed all of our day trips to the different sites included in the itinerary for this tour. In particular, Stromboli, Vulcano and Etna. All three of these volcanos are different from each other and were all worth visiting in my opinion.

The food, accommodation and transport throughout the trip were all fantastic and well organised by the company and our tour guides. As a result, the trip around Sicily and the Aeolian islands ran very smoothly. Our group got on very well and we enjoyed wining and dining together during the evenings.

All in all, I had a wonderful time in Sicily and the Aeolian islands and would like to thank Federica and Marco for such an amazing holiday! I would thoroughly recommend people who are interested in this part of the world and volcanos to consider this trip. You will be warmly welcomed by the guides and will thoroughly enjoy yourself!

Travelling early in the season it was too windy to visit Stromboli on the hydrofoil and Etna had fog/hail and snow so we all walked with our guide Genny on the lower option as the vulcanologist couldn't guarantee us reaching the summit. This was disappointing but on the plus side we loved our trip to Vulcano with a walk through the flumerols around the crater and a very smelly optional dip in the mudbaths and sea. The islands are stunningly beautiful and well worth a visit. Our walk on the western side of Lipari was stunning. Genny, our guide, saved the day given our longer stay on Lipari - she organised extra walks, with stunning views of the islands and a lunch with a local sicilian family which was amazing. Her love of the island and its people really shone through. The downside was three nights in Canneto rather than Lipari town in more of an apartment than a hotel (reception was closed most of the time and there was no evening meal available and a limited breakfast). Canneto was very quiet with a limited choice of restaurants and shops but to compensate for not visiting Stromboli Exodus organised an extra meal in a fish restaurant in Lipari town which was fun, we easily caught a local bus into Lipari town and came back in a taxi and the walk in one morning was quite easy and interesting. It's worth exploring the old town, really quaint and unspoilt. Genny's knowledge of the geology, flora and fauna as well as her friendly manner made the holiday, as did the lovely group we walked with. Etna was bleak and I'd suggest this trip was too early in the season for much chance of reaching the summit with the vulcanologist. Back at Catania I'd strongly recommend a taxi to Acitrezza to see the basalt columns. We took a boat trip around the rock formations here, visited the castle and had an excellent lunch - it's a gorgeous town with a farmers' market on a Sunday and we found this a great way to finish our holiday.

A brilliant trip, full of interest and topped off with a marvellous night view of the fireworks of Stromboli.

An excellent week; plenty of variety, walking, both easy and more challenging, sea swimming, boat trips and down time if you wanted it. Lots of options to suit everyone.

There really aren't words for the experience of standing on the rim of an active volcano at night and watching it explosively erupt. It is a full frontal assault on all of the senses. It starts with a brilliant flash of orange light followed closely by a boom that you feel as much in your chest as you hear with your ears. Then the pyrotechnic fountain of lava congeals into bombs that pound into the ground around the crater with a resounding chorus of heavy thuds. This is followed shortly by a shower of ash and a wafting cloud of sulfurous vapors. To say it is awe inspiring does the experience a serious misjustice. I can't recommend this trip highly enough. Our guide was excellent, the treks were well paced, and sights were magnificent.

This was a great trip and I'd strongly recommend it. A reasonable level of fitness is required as the Stromboli night trek is quite tough but it was truly memorable and a great experience to sit around the crater in the dark watching the eruptions.

An enjoyable way to see Sicily. The walks on Stromboli and to the top of Etna were the highlights. Other walks were quite easy. A fair amount of free time which could be difficult to fill in small villages.

A great week touring and trekking the main volcanoes on Vulcano,Stromboli and Etna. The week was really well organised from start to finish and all our family including our daughters of 18 and 21 enjoyed it tremendously.

Our group of fellow travellers were diverse and great fun and this made the trip even better.

We packed so much in to the week we did not have time to worry about tired legs.

Exodus have put together a great trip here.

The tour guide Nicoletta was superb. Worked hard to ensure the rooms were allocated at the end of each day. Well organised meals out and extra excursions available for those who wanted to do something else. The tickets were organised for the bus and hydrofoil so transport was seamless. The only hitch was with the occasional member of the group not being available for boarding when required. Hotel rooms were great along with the breakfast. The only breakfast that was limited was the hotel on Stromboli. Rooms should have had air conditioning as I found it very hot and hard to sleep after coming from the cooler English temperatures. There was a prominence of preserved meat and bread where I was looking forward to fish and vegetables which I was surprised to find were hard to acquire in the islands. The food was over all very good.

Great trips, nice pace, well organised and the volcanos were amazing!

Most memorable but strenuous.

A well-organised and fun tour.

Really enjoyed this holiday. Very varied, with excellent walking experiences, combined with plenty of downtime, and the chance to sample the local cuisine.

A trip worth considering because of the landscape and the food.

This trip takes you island hopping to experience the best of the volcanic activity in Sicily and the Aeolian Islands. There are opportunities to walk round craters, bathe in warm mud, dig your hands through warm sand and, most spectacularly, to watch the firework display that Stromboli puts on after sunset every evening. The hotels are comfortable and welcoming, and the sea view from our bedroom balcony in Lipari was fabulous.

This was an excellent trip, not too strenuous (except the ascent of Stromboli) with spectacular volcanic sights and views. There was plenty of time for leisure and to sample the local cuisine. It was all too short.

This was a most enjoyable trip- a very congenial group of fellow travellers,a fabulous guide & getting up close to some volcanoes in the stunning Aeolian islands

A truly excellent trip with something for everyone. The walking is strenuous on a couple of days and relaxed on others, but there is a wealth of experience to be gained with the variety of walks, culture, and especially the unique experience of being up close and personal with real live volcanoes!

A very enjoyable trip with a variety of volcanic activity. The fumaroles on Vulcano, Stromboli putting on a good show with it's puffs of smoke and fiery lava bursts, and the vast black site of Etna, part covered with snow, with it's many craters, giving a broody, bleak appearance. This alongside the charm of being on islands. There was a good bunch of people to enjoy the holiday with and we were also lucky with the weather.

Great combination of hiking, enjoying the relaxed atmosphere on the islands and the Sicilian cuisine.

Walking, Boating and enjoying the coastal Islands off Sicily.

Incredible week in the Aeolian Islands of Sicily. Hiking was incredibly beautiful and quite challenging at times. The views were extraordinary. Each meal was better than the last. Trip was incredibly organized and well-planned. Sicilian wine is so delicious, and the pizza and eggplant was outstanding.

This trip is a 'once in a lifetime' experience. You can see and feel the energy of the sea and the active volcanoes. Add the food and wine experience. It becomes the perfect combination of challenge and pleasure. Je n'oublierai jamais ce voyage qui m'a permis de voir des volcans en action tout en profitant de l'Italie a son meilleur.

I went specifically for the volcanoes to Sicily and I'm certainly not disappointed. It truly was an amazing trip. I recommend this trip to everyone!

Although the volcanoes are the focus of this trip, it also includes beautiful islands, great beaches and good food. The volcanoes are not predictable but whether they perform or not there is still lots to see.

Comprehensive schedule covering the Aoelian Islands and northern Sicily, including some good walks around the volcanoes.

A great group, guide, weather and location. An excellent itinerary with a mixture of contrasting activities and locations, from hiking and swimming on the peaceful Aeolian islands, to climbing the moonscape of Etna, whilst there is still free time to do other things.

Very good trip...great location, impressive volcanoes, good group, friendly and helpful guide, amazing photos. Only complaint was not having enough time on Stomboli to fit in. trek and a boat trip (there are lava flows to the sea at the moment so the night time boat trip is a must). Would have rather had one less day on Lipari and one extra day on Stromboli

An excellently devised and run holiday week. Our guide was special and all the logistics were in place. Stromboli by night was awe-inspiring, and Etna in its colossal size as well.

A great trip exploring the beautiful Aeolian islands on foot. A good mix of structured activities and freetime with lots of sicilian food, wine and culture and amazing volcanic activity.

Really enjoyed this trip, lots of variety from chaotic Catania to the tranquility and clear blue seas of the volcanic islands and the mars scape at the top of Etna. Walking was not too hard or too easy (it pays to be a bit fit though)

Used for over 15 years, great choice of holidays, reliable friendly staff and good to react to any issues

I had a query relating to an online techniical issue , probably relating to my credit card website. It was on a Sunday - I emailed and they rang on the Monday . They couldn’t get through but I range back when I could - the person who answered understood the issue and could help me immediately . So refreshing!
