No visit to this part of Brittany would be complete without seeing the beautiful medieval town of Dinan. This beautifully preserved ancient walled town, with riverfront port and picturesque half-timbered buildings, is an absolute gem. Wander round the marvellously restored ancient squares and ramparts, visit the imposing 13th century castle (with dungeon), admire the flamboyant Gothic basilica and stroll the lovely cobbled streets packed with authentic artisan workshops. Maybe take lunch in the bustling Place des Merciers, where pretty triangular-gabled houses are further examples of Dinan's exceptional architectural heritage.
We provide optional suggestions for every day of your stay, with a good mix of walking and cycling, usually at 1 or 1+ boot and 1-bike level. There's something for everyone, of every ability: there are short strolls to work up an appetite and rewarding day walks as well as the choice of easy bike rides from your doorstep on the voie verte cycle trail along the River Rance, which will enable you to get to know the area intimately.
It's a fantastically varied region with a landscape of peaceful river valleys, rugged coastal cliffs and secret coves, traditional Breton villages, and charming seaside resorts. Visit Dinard with its sandy beaches and Belle Epoque villas; take a short boat-hop to St-Malo to tour its famous ramparts. You could drive up to the coast for an unforgettable walk along the magnificent Cotes d'Armor trail that hugs the northern coast. For very little effort, you are rewarded with fabulous views, and highlights that include Cap Frehel and Fort La Latte. For a day out a little further afield, you could head over to iconic Mont St-Michel.
Stay at the 4 star Mercure Dinan Port le Jerzual hotel, located in a peaceful riverside setting at the Port de Dinan. There are 52 modern, en suite rooms, a bar and restaurant with delightful terrace overlooking the river, a seasonal heated outdoor pool, jacuzzi and fitness room.
Arrive at the 4 star Mercure Dinan Port le Jerzual. With its beautiful riverside location, watch the world go by from the bar and restaurant terrace. Below is our suggested itinerary for the week but you're free to pice and choose when and where you walk or cycle each day.
An easy walk to get to know Dinan and the Rance Valley. Amble along the river to Lehon, the 9th century Abbaye Saint Magloire and the ruins of its 11th to 13th century hilltop chateau. Then it's up into Dinan to explore this medieval gem.
This leisurely circuit takes you along the north side of the River Rance to the village of Taden with its restored church and the 14th century Manoir de la Grand' Cour. Choose to walk through peaceful woodlands and valley trails or cycle along the well-maintained cycle paths to the river marina at Lyvet/La Hisse and return along the old Dinard-Dinan railway line.
Explore the area around Dinan port or further afield. You can rent canoes or kayaks for guided tours or independent rental, or electric boats to head further upstream to Lehon or down-river to Lyvet. There are even boat trips as far as St Malo. (2.5hr each way).
Cycle south along the Rance to Lehon (as per the walk you might have already enjoyed). Then continue along the canal to Evran. Choose the same route back from Evran on the voie verte, or take to the backroads through countryside.
The options are almost endless, with coastal footpaths from Dinard (west or east) or around the headland at Cap Frehel to see Fort La Latte. Alternatively, take the bus to Dinard or the boat across to St Malo, to explore the ramparts and old town, or head even further afield to the iconic island commune of Mont-Saint-Michel.
Take a taxi to Moulin de Plouer (just east of Plouer-sur-Rance) and walk back to Dinan along the Natura 2000 trail. You stay along the River Rance, sometimes on its banks, at other times high above it and often with great views, especially at high tide on the more northerly section to Lyvet.
Please note that cycling helmets are compulsory in France for children under 12. As we are unable to provide these, we strongly recommend that you bring your own.
Please see our Planning you holiday page for full details.
This modern and comfortable hotel is right in the heart of the picturesque port of Dinan. From the bar and restaurant terrace, you can watch the comings and goings of the pleasure boats on the river Rance. The hotel boasts excellent facilities: there is a jacuzzi and fitness room as well as a seasonally heated pool.
Room upgrades: Room with terrace/balcony.
If you'd like to extend your trip with extra nights at the start or end, or if you'd like to arrange a stop off point en-route, then we recommend the following hotels.
The 4 star Le Senat is simply stunning! There are just 41 rooms, all stylishly furnished and a couple of suites with terraces, if you really fancy splashing out! All have satellite television, mini bar, air-conditioning, safe and hairdryer, plus Internet access.
Everyone who goes on a Headwater holiday will be emailed a link to our post-holiday questionnaire where they can give us an honest assessment of all aspects of their holiday - everything from how quickly we answer the phone to how clean the hotels were - plus an overall rating and comments about their holiday.
Any feedback collected is posted to our website, so that people can make an informed decision based on past experiences before heading off on holiday. We don’t edit the reviews, the only thing we do is proofread them and alter any typos, where necessary, to ensure they are easy to read for everyone. All reviews will be published (except in certain extreme circumstances), and a member of the Headwater team will respond to any constructive criticisms/comments under the reviews, at their discretion. So, for the real tales, twists and turns of our holidays, look no further than the reviews from our previous travellers.
My wife and I had an enjoyable holiday (mid-July 2018) staying in Dinan exploring the town, walking and cycling.
From our experience, future holidaymakers should note that:
1.The hotel, Hotel d’Avaugour (3 star), locks its doors at 9.00pm and sometimes up to an hour earlier. Access after this time is by code and keypad, and allows guests into the lobby and the rooms; the bar, lounge and garden (a prime feature of the hotel) are not accessible once the hotel is locked.
2.During weekdays, the owner seems to run the hotel on his own; he both staffs the reception desk and puts out the breakfast. As there is no cooked or hot food provided at breakfast, it only requires stored or freshly-delivered items to be laid out. At weekends (busier times), there seems to be two part-time staff members in addition to the owner.
3.As the owner carefully manages what he provides, three times during our 7-night stay he had to go, when requested,to a local bakery to supplement basic the breakfast items eg bread and croissants.
4.All the staff, when available, were friendly and very helpful.
5.The information provided notes for two cycle rides and four walks, two of which required a taxi ride and two were covered by the cycle routes. If you only want to walk or cycle, be prepared to find your own routes to supplement those covered by the notes.
Thank you so much for your feedback and for sharing your holiday experience. We are very pleased to hear that you found the hotel staff helpful, and we've been assured by the hotelier that should guests wish to enjoy the bar area and gardens they will remain open for them.
Many thanks again and I do hope we can welcome you on a Headwater holiday again soon.
Lovely town. Excellent rep. Long climb back up to hotel/town from port.Hotel limited and closed doors with no reception (just code) or bar after 9pm. Increased number of suggested walks and rides would be helpful
The highlight of our holiday was the wonderful care & attention from our guide/rep, Steve. He was full of good advice & suggestions & nothing too much trouble.
Dinan is a lovely town to visit. I recommend the St Louis restaurant & the outdoor swimming pool for anyone who enjoys that.
