Meet the Expert: Pedal the Possibilities with Headwater Holidays

Megan Wyatt is a Sales Consultant at Headwater Holidays. She is an expert in crafting our cycling holidays, packed with unforgettable experiences from which you’ll make lasting memories.

We asked Megan to tell us what she loves most about a Headwater cycling trip, and her expert tips on getting the most from your holiday.

Which is your favourite Headwater cycling trip?

My favourite trip has to be my first cycling experience with Headwater – the Julian Alps to the Adriatic Cycling.

Why do you love this trip the most?

The Julian Alps has an incredible contrast of jaw dropping scenery. You’ll start off in the mountains, cross the border of Slovenia and Italy and finish by the seaside in Grado.

What equipment were you given for the trip?

When you do this trip, you’ll get detailed route notes, maps and essential holiday information about the hotels and areas you will be visiting en route.

In resort, Miroslav our local agent kitted us out with our bikes (e-bikes also now available). Our bikes also had a set of panniers which included a bike lock, puncture repair kit, flash-light and a holder for our route notes.

What type of bike did you have?

Our bikes were high quality hybrid bikes, featuring 21 gears, flat peddles, gel saddle seat and straight handlebars.

What did you enjoy the most about cycling?

Cycling the Julian Alps allowed us to delve further into Slovenia and Italy and discover hidden gems which are perhaps not as well-known, such as Udine and Grado. The ride also allowed us to pass the border between Slovenia and Italy and be in two places at once!

What were you able to see and do along the cycle routes?

The highlight has to be Lake Bled. You’ll stay at Hotel Triglav which has stunning views over Lake Bled. You can also arrange your own boat trip on the Lake to the mini island in the middle.

With your very own mountain background you make your way to Tarvisio, an alpine ski village in the winter. When en route to Tarvisio, take time at stop at the charming village Kranjska Gora which is a great for a spot of lunch.

Day 9 offers a second highlight to the route as a little detour allows you to spend time at the UNESCO-listed, ancient Roman city of Aquileia.

Finally, the perfect end to your trip is cycling over a lagoon which takes you to the final stop, Grado. A short walk from your hotel is the beach – perfect for dipping your toes in the Adriatic.

Why choose a Headwater cycling holiday?

We’re proud to give everyone who books with us a personalised experience. All our accommodation is handpicked by our talented team, we love to make your holiday special with a variety of hotels, castles, chateaus and much more.

Not to mention our customers and staff at Headwater love our Navigation App which means you can enjoy the ride without stopping to check the map.

Do you have to be an experienced cyclist to go on a Headwater cycling break?

Not at all, the trips are designed for all abilities. I would recommend some road experience when cycling to help with entering and exiting the towns and villages en route.

What is your top tip?

To cycle at your leisure. The beauty of our Headwater Holidays is that there is no rush to your next hotel so absorb the culture of your destination and enjoy!
