Lakes and Mountains of Carinthia Walk

Welcome to Austria's sunniest region! Lying at the crossroads where Austria, Italy and Slovenia meet, Carinthia is a wonderful mix of cultures, surrounded by jaw-dropping mountains, lush green valleys and crystal-clear lakes. Although relatively unheard of, this region is surely one of the most beautiful in Europe and has inspired the likes of Mahler, Brahms and Worlf to name but a few.

Your eight-night holiday combines serene walking trails with lively cosmopolitan towns, starting at 1900m on the top of the Gerlitzen Mountain. With 360 degree views of Carinthia you'll pick up the famous, transnational Alpe-Adria trail, passing through peaceful, scented forest with wonderful views of shimmering Ossiachersee, your next stop. Climbing across a bubbling gorge you head up to the Ossiach Tauern, past fish- filled mountain lakes and ruined castles on your way to vibrant Velden and the beautiful waters of Worthersee. Your next two days lead you along marked lakeside trails, through a mixture of pine forests, lush green meadows, mountain lakes and tiny hamlets - you'll discover some breathtaking viewpoints offering sublime vistas over the whole province, before arriving in the lively town of Portschach. On your free days you'll have time to explore more of this stunning region using the excellent local trains and ferries. Klagenfurt and Villach are good choices for days out and there are plenty of optional walking trails to choose from.

We've hand-picked four atmospheric hotels for your holiday: the modern Seepark Hotel in Klagenfurt offering luxurious spa facilities; the Stiftshotel Ossiach, located in the C11 Ossiach Abbey; Velden's Seehotel Hubertushof (with its own private beach) where you'll receive a warm welcome from Robert Kennedy - his grandfather came to Carinthia during WWI and found it so beautiful he never left; and the Park Hotel in Portschach, wonderfully situated on its own island.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive in Klagenfurt

Arrive at your hotel in the regional capital of Klagenfurt. There's time to explore the lakeside or wander along the canal into the town centre before dinner.

Day 2 - Gerlitzen to Ossiach 17km/11mi/5hr

After a transfer to Annenheim (25 mins by cable car, 40 mins by car), take the chairlift to the top of Gerlitzen Mountain (1900m) and enjoy the superb 360o views of the valleys and turquoise lakes of Carinthia. You'll descend the mountain along the Alpe-Adria trail, heading through fragrant spruce and larch forest, catching occasional glimpses of the stunning Ossiachersee. Perhaps stop at a mountain inn for some traditional fayre before passing through the pretty village of Steindorf and through Bleistatter Moor, home to a variety of plants and wildlife such as marsh iris, lakeshore bulrush and great crested grebe. Follow a final forest path with lake views before pretty meadows take you to the charming Ossiach Abbey, your base for the next two nights.

Day 3 - At Ossiach

Your hotel in Ossiach is a former Benedictine monastery right on the lake shore, and is the home of the Carinthian Summer music festival. Today you could explore the charming village of Ossiach, take a boat trip or follow a forest trail to the impressive ruins of the C14 Landskron Castle.

Day 4 - Ossiach to Velden 18km/11.5mi/5.5hr

Follow a steep trail of wooden steps over the gushing Schluctweg Gorge today - an impressive sight! You'll climb up to the wooded mountain ridge of Ossiach Tauern and the Tauern Pond, a fishfilled mountain lake in the middle of idyllic forest. Head on, passing the pretty hamlets of Oberdorf and Kostenburg, sun-kissed meadows and the crumbling castle ruins of Hohenwart, until you reach Saissersee - catch the breathtaking views of Worthersee and Velden. Next, follow a streamlet into bustling Velden where you stay for the next two nights.

Day 5 - At Velden

Today you could relax on the hotel's lakeside beach or head into historic Velden and indulge in a spot of people-watching from one of the town's lively bars. If you fancy exploring further afield, take the train to Carinthia's second city, Villach, with its wonderful cosmopolitan feel and impressive Italianate buildings. Or why not head across the lake to visit the Pyramidenkogel, the highest wooden viewing tower in the world from where you can enjoy stunning views across Carinthia and beyond the Austrian borders? Alternatively, follow a path south of the lake to Trattnigteich, a charming small lake and a perfect spot for lunch - enjoy the sound of birdsong and aromas of wild herbs and flowers!

Day 6 - Velden to Portschach 13km/8mi/4hr or 17km/11mi/5hr

Today you leave Velden behind, following a path along the thundering Romerschluct Gorge. You'll pass pretty Lake Forst with the option to circle its waters on a mainly lakeside path, before a narrow trail takes you past flowering meadows, pine forests and tiny hamlets including Sekull, to reach Hohe Gloriete, perhaps the best viewpoint on Worthersee. Enjoy wonderful views across the lake as far as the Karawanken Mountains before following a trail of steps down to Portschach and your island hotel.

Day 7 - At Portschach

Today you could relax on your hotel's private beach and bathe in the lake's warm waters or perhaps take a boat trip around Worthersee. You also have the option to head across the lake to Reifnitz, from where you can enjoy a walk to Klagenfurtsee, passing the Spitnik Ponds, a nature reserve teeming with wildlife such as birds, frogs, deer and fire salamanders, before following a streamlet down to the lake front at Klagenfurt.

Day 8 - Portschach to Klagenfurt 18km/11.5mi/6hr

It's a wonderful walk to finish your week, taking you to fantastic viewpoints such as the impressive Pirker Kogel, a 666m-high peak boasting panoramic views over Worthersee - be sure to bring your camera! You'll pass pretty meadows which could be straight out of The Sound of Music and traditional castles like Schloss Hernstein - perhaps stop for a drink here before following a flowerfilled trail, with a final, superb view of Worthersee's glistening waters, back to your lakeside hotel for your final night.

Day 9 - Leave Klagenfurt

a great holiday with a good balance between activity and rest and lots to occupy on rest days

Whilst the hotels on the walking trip were very good they were generally a lot larger and less traditional than places we had stayed in before when travelling with Headwater. The exception was the hotel at Bodensdorf which had far more character.
