TRIP DESCRIPTION

Mallorca (also known as Majorca) has long been an island synonymous with sun, sea and sand, but many forget the treasures hidden away in the lesser known parts of the island. This relaxed itinerary features relatively easy, self-guided cycling taking in the highlights of both the quiet coastal areas and the foothills of the beautiful inland Tramuntana mountain range. The hotels we use are small and family run, and the homemade cooking and local Mallorquin wines are a delightful welcome after a day's Mallorca cycling!

You stay at Family run boutique hotels.



Family run boutique hotels, Mallorca

We stay in small, family run boutique hotels throughout this trip, most have swimming pools. Highlights included a converted farmhouse near the south coast and a lovely rural hotel in the foothills of the mountains. Many of the hotels have their own restaurants and offer mouthwatering delicious local cuisine, and good Mallorquin wines.

All prices are based on 2 persons sharing, so if there is an odd number of people travelling in your party or you are travelling alone, there will be a compulsory supplement for a single room for the tour duration.

For a solo traveller there is an additional charge to cover transfer costs.

Eating & Drinking

7 breakfasts are included and consist of a continental-style buffet.

Suggestions of what to do for lunch and dinner are given in the cycling route notes. Mallorcan cuisine is typically a hearty affair, with meats and stews showing up on most menus as well as the popular suckling pig. Fish is also a staple, and you will find monkfish and sea bream in a whole manner of sauces. Tapas (a selection of small dishes) is also widely consumed, either served as starters or as a lighter meal. Specialities include Sobrasada (soft, spreadable chorizo-like sausage), Sopas Mallorquinas (Mallorcan stew made from liver or seafood), Pa amb oli (bread with oil, often eaten with island cheese, jamon (ham) or chorizo), Parrillada de pescado (mixed grilled fish and seafood). Desserts include Ensaimada (a spiral shaped cake dusted with icing sugar) and Coca de patata (a sweet, bread like bun made from potato flour). Local wine is readily available and usually of good quality, and the local liqueur herbes de Mallorca is often given as an aperitivo after your meal.

Day 2: At Campos (39km/24.2mi)

Cycle to the stunning beaches near your hotel, visit the salt production lagoons and see the local flamingo inhabitants, and enjoy a rest by the hotel pool. The owners of the hotel are especially proud of their local homemade cooking and Mallorquin wines they provide.

elevation

Day 3: Campos to Algaida (38km/23.6mi)

Following small country lanes you cycle down to the coast before heading north to Algaida. The route passes through almond fields (in bloom late January and February) and quaint villages before reaching your hotel in Algaida where a swimming pool awaits you.

elevation

Day 4: At Algaida (41km/25.5mi)

Enjoy a leisurely ride today as you cycle to the market town of Sineu stopping in small villages on the way for a coffee or snack. Slow your pace right down as you enjoy the unspoiled countryside and glorious surroundings.

elevation

Day 5: Algaida to Selva (40km/24.9mi)

Cycling towards the Tramuntana mountains (but not climbing them!), you head towards Moscari and Selva, where you you spend the next two nights in a delightful hotel, based in the centre so ideally located for a promenade in the evenings. The hotel also benefits from a pool so you can enjoy a swim at the end of your cycling days.

elevation

Day 6: At Selva (36km/22.4mi)

Today's circular route from your base of Selva allows an excellent day of cycling through typically Mediterranean landscapes of holm oak woodland, almonds, figs and caper tree groves, one of the most beautiful settings of the island.

elevation

Day 7: Selva to Pollenca (41km/25.5mi)

Cycle towards the old historic town of Alcudia where there are plenty of options for a leisurely lunch. Head further north to the lovely medieval town of Pollenca where you will spend your final night. Enjoy a meander around the cobble-stone streets and street market, or enjoy dinner alfresco in one of the many charming restaurants.

Day 8: Leave Pollenca

End in Pollenca, and take a taxi to Palma de Mallorca for your flight home. If you have time before your flight be sure to visit the historic city centre before you leave.

REVIEWS

We had the perfect holiday - big blue skies, wildflowers, birdsong and the scent of orange blossom accompanied us on our rides through the countryside.

We visited some interesting places, enjoyed wonderful food and restaurant along the way.

Loved the concept of cycling sea to sea.

Angela Sheppard, 31 Mar 2024

I was nervous booking this type of trip without knowing anything about Headwaters. It turns out there was nothing at all to be nervous about, everything was handled with total professionalism. The app worked great, the bikes were great and overall the 3 star hotels were also. We will be doing a trip with Headwaters again!

Denise Mclaughlin, 1 Mar 2024

Everything was dealt with promptly and courteously, including when we had various changes to timings of the trip and people coming on the trip.

The app used on the cycling trip was excellent. Easy to use and incredibly helpful.

Catherine Hurst, 12 Oct 2023

I thought the holiday was really fabulous. The pre-departure info was great, the flights & transfers a pleasure & on time, the cycling routes excellent & the Headwater app was superb. The idea of 2 nights per hotel was really good as it allowed time to relax & unpack. The boutique hotels were terrific & the bikes great. We enjoyed being off the beaten track & away from the tourist havens. The only downside was that a lot of cafes & restaurants were closed in the non-tourist places, which limited our choice. Since half the fun is enjoying the food & drink, it was a bit of a shame. We didn't realise we had booked right at the end of the season, which seemed to be the reason for this.

Catherine Hurst, 12 Oct 2023

Superb quality of accommodation. Sa Bisbal and Can Cota suites particularly lovely

Brendan Mcilroy, 8 Oct 2023

Overall very positive. As I mentioned in the previous comments the bike selection needs to be improved in giving people a choice of type of bike.

Maryanne Kyburz-ladue, 29 Sep 2023

We are long time Headwater customers. We really liked when Headwater had their own staff in situ. Those tours were really special. That said subcontracting to local companies works well in out experience. Appreciate that allows Headwater to offer more tours but there is less opportunity to differentiate from competition.

Steven Chapman, 5 Sep 2023

We enjoyed the four small family-run hotels and there was enough variety in the cycling to maintain interest. There was very little traffic except on the road to the very popular Es Trenc beach. We would recommend the walk to Lluc on the rest day at Caimari as a change from cycling. We are in our sixties but we managed to cycle without the use of e-bikes. There was air conditioning in all the hotel bedrooms. We managed to complete the cycle routes in good time each day, arriving at the hotel in early to mid-afternoon, in time for a drink and swim in the hotel pool. We needed plenty of sun cream and insect repellent as it was sunny and humid. Most of the hoteliers and restauranteurs spoke good English and menus in English were often provided. We navigated with one of us using the mobile phone app and the other using the paper route notes, and this worked well. Either on their own would have sufficed. Overall, a very enjoyable holiday and we will use Headwater again.

Judith Rawle, 3 Sep 2023

Very good holiday, well organised, lovely hotels. Warm welcome from all hotel staff. Have holidayed with Heatwater for over 20 years and this holiday was one of the best. Thank you.

Dianne Dey, 1 Sep 2023

Well organised and excellent cycle trip on mainly good rural back roads. Generally very good hotels and excellent transfers. Electric bikes were brand new and easy to use-much needed in 30 degree heat.

Susan Eland, 2 Aug 2023

A really pleasant and relatively easy-going cycling holiday on peaceful country roads in an area of Mallorca that relatively few visitors - apart from cyclists - see. Excellent welcome and very co-operative staff at all four hotels - Finca Es Torrent, Petit Algaida, Sa Bisbal (using Con Cota facilities) & Son Sant Jordi.

MERRYWEATHER, 8 May 2023

Our holiday was exactly what we had hoped for. The cycling grade and distances were suitable for our ability and central Mallorca offers fantastic countryside to explore. The villages were lovely and the hotels gave great service and accommodation. Although we used the paper maps at times, the Headwater App. has inspired us to look into what Apps. we can acquire for ourselves. A highly recommended trip and we will holiday with Headwater again in the future.

Mr Carter, 28 Apr 2023

We have holidays with Headwater/Exodus for over 20 years - on both self-guided and group holidays. This was our first time using the app. I was anxious about this but it was fantastic - easy to install and easy use during the cycling. Thank you to Megan Wyatt who looked after our booking and answered initial queries.

Otherwise excellent service from the team and from all of the people who looked after us in Mallorca.

Mr Chestnutt, 15 Apr 2023

Our Mallorca cost to coast trip was another great Headwater holiday for us. We loved the variety going across the island and stayed in some quirky but fantastic places. I would recommend it to others as a great way to see some of the real Mallorca and have a varied holiday at the same time. The travel arrangements were great and the bike rental was no problem at all, even when we had a puncture on a small country road. Someone attended to it very quickly. All in all a great holiday.

Mrs Macalister Hal, 4 Sep 2022

Note this has already been published on the Exodus website:

This was our first self-guided holiday in a long time although we have done many group holidays. Mallorca is very well set up to cycle covered in good condition country lanes and feels very safe. In my opinion the rides were grade 2 some days, and 3 on others. The hotels were of varying quality. Hotel es Torrent was a lovely place to start but there was no choice over the evening meal and was some way away from the village. At Reco de Randa we were given an upgraded room, and the pool and restaurant were both lovely. Food was really good everywhere we stayed. However in Pollenca we were put in an apartment which wasn’t really appropriate for a hotel holiday (shame as the hotel itself seemed lovely).

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Do cycle (or walk) up the hill to the Sancturi de Cura in Randa.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Because Headwater didn’t provide them, I mapped all the rides on RideWithGPS (if you would like them please let me know). Google maps was very good as a back-up if you take a detour.

Mr Robinson, 16 Sep 2019

A great way to see parts of the country you wouldn’t normally see. The hotels were first class and the people we met were so friendly.
