Austria: Salzburg

Austrian Lakes Cycling

  • Excellent 3 star and 4 star hotels, some with spas and pools; warm, friendly hoteliers; lovely local cuisine
  • Exceptional lakeside routes: swimming opportunities every day
  • Fairytale Salzburg: Baroque palaces, historic castles, stunning gardens
  • Masses of 'rest day' choices: boat trips, watersports, mountain rail rides

Our 8-night cycling holiday in the Austrian Lakes is fantastically varied. It's a wonderful mix of spectacular scenic views, shoreline routes and swimming opportunities galore. The cycling is graded as one bike-wheel rating, but you can extend your routes on all days.

Every stop brings new discoveries such as St Wolfgang's antique cog railway to the summit of Schafberg, Mozart's museum in St Gilgen, and Mondsee's frescoed high street; the church here was the location of the famous wedding in 'The Sound of Music'! When you fancy a change from cycling, local buses and boats shuttle between delightful lakeside villages making exploration easy. Regional highlights include Emperor Franz Josef's summer residence in Bad Ischl (he declared war on Serbia here, which led to WW1), Gmunden's 'floating' castle, Seeschloss Ort, and its porcelain town hall bells, and an unforgettable paddle steamer on Lake Traun below spectacular mountain peaks, not to mention a trip to Salzburg itself.

Our hotels are extremely friendly and provide a wonderful contrast throughout your holiday, from the centrally-located Hotel Leitnerbrau to the lakeside retreat in Gmunden. We have included three evening meals on the holiday, leaving you free to choose during your stays in Mondsee and Bad Ischl.

Day 1: Arrive in Mondsee

Arrive at your centrally located hotel in Mondsee, with time to explore before your evening meal.
You stay at the Hotel Leitnerbrau (breakfast included)

Day 2: Mondsee to Weissenbach 21km/13mi

Today you follow the shore of Mondsee before joining Attersee at the pretty lakeside town of Unterach and following the lakeside to Weissenbach.
You stay at the Hotel Post (breakfast and evening meal)

Day 3: Weissenbach to Gmunden 42km/26mi

Follow a route on the eastern side of the lake through Steinbach and the scenic Weyregg, before passing through Schorfling where you can visit the Gustav Klimt museum. The backdrop of 1000m peaks loom over the lake and are mirrored in the water. As you head towards Gmunden and Traunsee you will pass fields of wheat fringed by poppies and cornflowers.
You stay at Landhotel Grunberg (breakfast and evening meal)

Day 4: At Gmunden

Today, take a trip on Gisela, the last coal-fired paddle steamer, once used by Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The cable car at the top of the Grunberg (944m) offers wonderful views at the summit, where you look down on Gmunden's esplanade and the romantic Seeschloss Ort, a 'floating' castle on the lake dating from 17th century.
You stay at Landhotel Grunberg (breakfast and evening meal)

Day 5: Gmunden to Bad Ischl 19km/12mi or 37km/23.5mi

Taking the boat across to Ebensee, you'll stop off at Traunkirchen to visit the church with its famous fisherman's pulpit. Alternatively, you could cycle from Gmunden along the western shore of Traunsee to Ebensee, and enjoy the spectacular fjord-type scenery. From Ebensee, cycling a beautiful riverside route, you'll criss-cross the River Traun to Bad Ischl where you'll spend the next three nights.
You stay at the Hotel Goldenes Schiff (breakfast included)

Day 6: At Bad Ischl

You're spoilt for choice for things to see and do in Bad Ischl: the imperial spa, the salt mines, the ice cave in Obertraun, thermal salt baths, the Katrin cable car, the Siriuskogl viewing platform, museums and villas. Perhaps take a horse-drawn carriage ride, people-watch on the riverside esplanade, or enjoy coffee and cake in the famous Zauner restaurant.
You stay at the Hotel Goldenes Schiff (breakfast included)

Day 7: At Bad Ischl

Continue exploring Bad Ischl or take an optional cycle ride from Halstatt.

Going either north or south of the lake, you'll pass beautiful St Gilgen at the top of the lake before heading onto Mondsee, your home for the last night.
You stay at the Hotel Leitnerbrau (breakfast included)

Day 9: Leave Mondsee

Please note that cycling helmets are compulsory in Austria for all customers under 12 yrs. As we are unable to provide these, we strongly recommend that you bring your own.

Hotel Post , Weissenbach

The Hotel Post sits on the shores of Attersee, offering panoramic views of Austria's biggest lake as well as a stunning mountain backdrop. The hotel has its own private beach - so you can swim in what is said to be the warmest waters in the Salzkammergut lake district!

The hotel is decorated in a traditional Austrian style, and most rooms have lake views and balconies. The hotel also benefits from a lakeside sauna.

Hotel Grunberg, Gmunden

Hair dryer iconNEARBY:

The Hotel Grunberg has a great lakeside location directly below Grunberg Mountain, which soars above the town of Gmunden.

The hotel is right on the lakeside, with a view over to the lights of Gmunden itself shimmering on the water. It takes about 10 minutes to cycle into the centre of town.

Bedrooms are spacious, and the majority have lake views - they are not typically Austrian, but more contemporary in feel.

Markus Sittikus, Salzburg

Hair dryer icon

The 4 star Markus Sittikus is a beautifully presented hotel, based in an 18th century building with a mustard facade located in a quiet side street not far from the Mirabell palace, just a 15 minute walk from the old city.

Inside the hotel the decor is attractive and individual, with bold colours like mustard yellow and red tartan in the comfortable bar area, and some colourful murals painted on the walls throughout the building. Public rooms have period furniture and the upbeat interior, combined with the personal attention you receive from the friendly staff, make a stay here particularly memorable.

The hotel has 39 rooms though it feels smaller, with television (CNN/BBC), direct dial phones and hairdryers. Each one is individually decorated with attractive colour combinations and solid wooden furniture, in keeping with the age and status of the building.

It is also one of the few hotels in Salzburg to have a garden to relax in, if you are looking for some respite after doing the sights.

Reviews

Everyone who goes on a Headwater holiday will be emailed a link to our post-holiday questionnaire where they can give us an honest assessment of all aspects of their holiday - everything from how quickly we answer the phone to how clean the hotels were - plus an overall rating and comments about their holiday.

Any feedback collected is posted to our website, so that people can make an informed decision based on past experiences before heading off on holiday. We don’t edit the reviews, the only thing we do is proofread them and alter any typos, where necessary, to ensure they are easy to read for everyone. All reviews will be published (except in certain extreme circumstances), and a member of the Headwater team will respond to any constructive criticisms/comments under the reviews, at their discretion. So, for the real tales, twists and turns of our holidays, look no further than the reviews from our previous travellers.

Mrs Wall, 21/08/2019

From the very first phone call to Headwater, all e-mails and posts were polite, helpful and welcoming. Helen was always happy to answer any questions and arrange any additional requests promptly and professionally. I was always pleased to talk to her and nothing was too much trouble. This gave both my husband and I so much confidence in the company and our holiday. Our overseas reps (Collin and Jill) sent us a lovely postcard introducing themselves a week before the holiday. This was such a lovely thought and the help and support continued for the duration of the holiday. Collin and Jill were lovely, kind people who offered more than we could have expected. Thank you so much. Hotels were very good and in some lovely locations, swimming in a lake was one of the highlights of the holiday!

Well worth the money and the Austrian scenery and people were brilliant. Would thoroughly recommend this holiday and have "earmarked" a future one for next year!

Mr Cross, 07/08/2019

Lovely scenery, good hotels, mostly flat cycling, excellent reps. Hot sunny weather so had three swims. Museums/excursions and some good walks on the 'off' days. Only drawback was the amount of cycling alongside (or even on) some busy (July) lakeside roads.

Mrs Lucas, 30/07/2019

A lovely holiday in a beautiful part of the world. The hotels were chosen well and we had a couple of lovely lake views. We enjoyed having two and three night stops so we could explore the area at our leisure. We had mixed weather - you have to prepare for rain in mountainous regions - but it didn't stop us getting out and about. We decided to go for electric bikes for the first time and what a revelation they were. It meant that we could enthusiastically head off the beaten track and tackle sights that would have been exhausting to reach with just gears. We would like to thank Colin and Jill who were brilliant reps - so helpful and friendly and very knowledgeable about the area. We finished up with an extra night in Salzburg which Headwater were happy to arrange. One negative aspect of the holiday which is worth mentioning for those planning to bring children - the lakeside roads are very busy with traffic in early July and although 95% have safe cycle paths alongside the road, it can be a bit gruelling at times. So maybe it would be a good idea to take the boat sometimes.

Ms Giles, 08/07/2019

An amazing holiday words can not express the beauty of the lakes

Reps Jill and Collin made the holiday perfect Very helpful and full of tips and advise nothing was to much trouble

Mrs Dadds, 03/09/2018

An excellent holiday overall with the right level of physical activity and leisure time. Many of the stops provided an insight into the 'real' Austria with some excellent opportunities for more major attractions at the multi-night stop overs. The reps were always on hand for help and advice and made it clear that included lifts if required. However our 11 year old daughter who is by no means an avid cyclist completed the whole route (including extensions) without issue.

Mr James, 19/08/2018

A superb holiday, and although not marketed for families, suited our 11 year old kids perfectly. Cycle distances just right for them, routes generally quiet, but with options to skip the busier sections; great hotels and food and such a beautiful area - clean, quiet (even though it was August) and so lovely turquoise lakes at every turn. The reps Colin and Jill are passionate about their area and very attentive. Go now!

Mr Campbell-Smith, 10/08/2018

This was one of the best holidays we have had. We were lucky with the weather perhaps, but it was a joy to cycle through such stunning countryside. The numerous stops en route to swim in the lakes and rivers were wonderful.

Mr Richardson, 29/07/2018

The Austrian Lakes are a fantastic destination and your reps are superb.

Mr Holdsworth, 15/06/2018

Very good holiday. Our room in Bad Ischl was an upgrade (which we had to accept if we wanted this specific holiday). We travelled in a group of 7 and one couple did not get an upgraded room. Although the rooms were lovely we would all have preferred not to have to pay the extra.

Your reps Jill and Colin were excellent. I would go as far to say the best reps I have ever had on any holiday. Friendly, professional and nothing was too much trouble. I hope as a company you realise what an asset they are to you. The sat nav routing was very good. Only at one very awkward junction it was not clear. I would certainly recommend using it but would want the paper maps as back up, especially if the phone ran out of power.

Mrs Rawle, 26/08/2017

An excellent holiday. Lots of good cycling with plenty to do on the rest days. Very convenient with direct flights from Gatwick to Salzburg and transfer by minibus to the first hotel. Very easy cycling with very few steep climbs and mostly on cycle paths or quiet roads.

Mrs Houseman, 08/08/2017

The Austrian Lakes Cycling Holiday met our full expectations, the scenery and the hospitality was superb and the small hills very forgiving to inexperienced cyclists! The majority of the tracks were on very quiet cycle paths through beautiful meadows and villages. However we did find the first hour after leaving the Hotel Post in Weissenbach quite daunting , this may have been because it was a Saturday in high season. So pleased that Jill and Colin suggested that we visit Hallstatt when we were in Bad Ischl , the village and visit to the Salzwelten were most interesting and the scenery breath-taking.

Mrs Hebblethwaite, 21/07/2017

We had a wonderful holiday; the route was varied and interesting with plenty of time for stops, picnics and swimming on most days. It is exactly as suggested a relaxed activity holiday with fabulous scenery. There are enough hills to make the route interesting but not so many to be off-putting; in general I'd say there were more fun down-hills than tiring up-hills with lots of flat in-between. We had standard bikes but were surprised by the number of cyclists in Austria using electric bikes, so if you take this option you will blend in well! We were amazed at the courtesy shown to bikes on the road; we were given space and other road users were really respectful; we could learn from that back home.

As always in the mountains we had varied weather; some really hot days and some very soggy days ... just as you'd expect. We were lucky that we were at the Villa Seilern in Bad Ischl when the weather was really wet so were able to make use of the hotel's pool and spa which are great. The pool is stunning!

The hotels were mostly very good (although the beginning and end at The Post were not the best) and were organised for Headwater guests. In the evenings, food was plentiful and hot, if not always varied but breakfasts were good with lots of choice to fortify for the day ahead. Rooms were lovely and clean.

The bikes were well maintained and modern.... if the weather looks as if it might be wet, take your own lights as there are none provided! Bike storage was no problem; everywhere was expecting us and had good bike facilities. Security of bikes doesn't seem to be such an issue in Austria; many people left bikes unlocked outside shops etc ... we always locked them securely and they were safe.

We had easy access to shops along the way for getting picnic lunches. Eating out in Mondsee was easy and varied.

We used Ride with GPS which is new to Headwater but also had the printed route instructions and maps; if you have the option do both ... there were times when the printed instructions were invaluable (giving more reassuring details) but also times when the GPS was useful as it showed us where we were if we diverted off the route for a reason!) Embrace both and you're covered!

Throughout the holiday we were thrilled with the kindliness and helpfulness of our reps Jill and Colin. The pre holiday postcard was a lovely touch, their were organised, welcoming and very genuine in their desire to help in any way they could. You are in very safe hands with them.

This was our first trip with Headwater and we were very impressed with the organisation of the holiday. We met a couple who were on their 11th holiday with Headwater which we think speaks volumes. We would certainly book with Headwater again.
