Mont Blanc Snowshoe Week
This 7-night holiday is based in Les Contamines, a small family-friendly French village with a surprising amount of terrain for winter activities. In the shadow of Mont Blanc this is a wonderfully dramatic setting for snowshoeing and most walks are conveniently based directly from your hotel.
Throughout the week you'll explore forest trails, alpine valleys and mountain plateaux, enjoying some of the finest views in the Alps. On your free day, you'll have the chance to explore Chamonix and you can choose how to spend your time: try some downhill or cross country skiing, take a glacier walk, ride on one of Europe's highest cable cars or enjoy some shopping and sightseeing. You'll also visit Le Plan de la Cry, where you'll follow forest tracks towards some seriously spectacular views of the Mont Blanc range.
You'll enjoy the services of a tour leader throughout your holiday and no previous experience is necessary.
Typical holiday itinerary
Day 1 - Arrive in Mont Blanc
Arrive in Geneva, transfer to Les Contamines.
Day 2 - Introduction to the area and snowshoe lesson
Your first day on snowshoes begins directly from the hotel as we walk up in the direction of the Hamlet les Baptieu. This route is relatively undiscovered and a good introduction to the area, with some good views of Mont Blanc. Initially starting in the forest, the trail then opens up with a panorama with a small alpine village directly below us. If luck is on our side, today is also a good day to potentially spot some of the wilder residents of the area.
Day 3 - Snowshoe to the Mayeres Chalets and explore the Aravis mountain range
After a private transfer to the hamlet of La Charmette above Sallanches, today's snowshoe begins in the direction of the Mayeres Chalets. We will then explore the Aravis mountain range which offers a completely different perspective of the area in an open terrain. As we gain a bit of altitude during the walk today there is a possibility of seeing the whole side of the Mont Blanc chain. Mont Blanc and Les Drus are particularly impressive to see from here. The descent will be in the fresh snow of the north east where the snow is at its best.
Day 4 - Snowshoeing to Le Truc Auberge at the foot of Domes de Miage and Aiguille de Bionnassay
After a 5-minute shuttle transfer our snowshoe begins in the direction of Mont Blanc. Once at the Truc chalet, we will truly appreciate this high mountain sanctuary, being at the foot of Domes de Miage (3640m), Aiguille de Bionnassay (4062m) and the giant glaciers of the Mont Blanc range. It's also possible to observe wildlife like chamoix, ibex or deer.
Day 5 - Free day
For your free day there are many options available: downhill skiing (lessons available), cross country skiing, a glacier walk with a UIAGM mountain guide, ice climbing, tandem paragliding, helicopter sightseeing flights over Mont Blanc, a trip on one of Europe's highest cable cars - the Aiguille du Midi, a ride on the Montenvers train to view the Mer de Glace, free rides on the Mont Blanc express train and local buses to Chamonix for shopping and sightseeing or a visit to Chamonix's sport centre with swimming pool, hammam, sauna, gym, indoor tennis and squash. The choice is endless!
Day 6 - Exploration from Le Plan de la Cry
There's a short transfer by private bus this morning to the village of Le Plan de la Cry, from where you'll follow a forest track. After 2 hours of walking the view opens up to the spectacular scenery of the Mont Blanc range. It's as if you can nearly touch the Mont Blanc summit and the glaciers with your fingers.
Day 7 - Exploration from Les Contamines valley
After a short shuttle transfer to the end of Les Contamines valley, we begin by following an old Roman track to Nant Borrant. The area around here is beautiful, with a succession of Alpine meadows and old chalets which are still very well preserved. This day is also perfect to observe some remarkable geological features like moraines, evidence of erosion and different rock types.
Day 8 - Leave Mont Blanc
