Austrian Riviera Walk

Lying at the crossroads where Austria, Italy and Slovenia meet is Austria's sunniest region, Carinthia. It's name derives from an old Celtic word meaning 'Friend', and you're sure of a warm welcome here. Although relatively unknown, this striking region of cosmopolitan towns, turquoise clear lakes and breathtaking mountains has provided inspiration for the likes of Mahler, Brahms and Worlf.

Our six night holiday leads you around Lake Worthersee, the largest in the area and famous for its warm clean waters, and up above the lake to explore traditional villages built around onion-domed churches. The towns you pass through are wonderfully varied, from the regional capital Klagenfurt to quiet Portschach and lively Velden. Wildlife is in abundance too: look out for wild deer, hares, eagles and falcons in the pristine flower-filled meadows and pine scented forests. There's plenty of time to explore on your rest days, and you will receive a Worthersee ferry pass which allows unlimited travel on the lakes ferries.

You stay in 4* hotels throughout - the historic Hotel Sandwirth in the heart of Klagenfurt, and two lakeside hotels. The Park Hotel sits on its own island in Portschach, and the wonderful Seehotel Hubertushof in Velden, with an intriguing family history, has its own private beach. the food of the region takes elements from its neighbours with exciting pasta dishes, freshwater fish and tasty soups, all washed down with very good Austrian white wines or Italian reds.

These walks are mainly easy and follow well marked routes, however there are some forested sections where the terrain is inclined and loose underfoot. Whilst the distances and heights would traditionally give this holiday a 1+ boot rating, due to the amount of ascents and descents we deem this to be a 2 boot walk.
