Hotel Agathae , CataniaThis pretty 3* hotel is set right in the heart of Catania's historic town centre, on one of the city's main streets, Via Etnea, with lovely views onto the city's gardens and just a few minutes walk from all the main attractions and many of the city's best restaurants and cafes. The hotel is named after the 3C martyr and patron saint of Catania, Sant'Agata, who according to local legend protects the city from the mighty Mount Etna. The hotel dates back to the 1800s when it was rebuilt following an earthquake in 1693 which almost completely destroyed the city. It therefore features some detail typical of this period, including high vaulted ceilings and beautifully frescoed walls, which allude to the grandeur of times gone by, as well as Sicilian artisan-made furniture which compliments the hotel's interior. The hotel benefits from a terrace overlooking the Villa Bellini gardens, where weather permitting, you can take a leisurely breakfast before setting off sightseeing!
