La Haut Plantation, Soufriere
This wonderful hotel is located in Soufrire, the original French capital of St Lucia. It sits on a steep mountainside high above the town, facing the most impressive view St Lucia has to offer – the two pitons. The views of the sea below and the pitons across the bay are really enthralling.
La Haut Plantation grows a variety of tropical plants on its 52 acres of land such as: Coffee, cocoa, nutmeg, cashew nuts, soursop, guavas, mangoes, avocadoes, breadfruit, papaya, bananas and plenty of coconuts.
The gardens are also teeming with many colours of flowers and tropical plants like
bougainvillea, oleander, ginger lily, bird of paradise, crotons and hibiscus.
Rooms at La Haut are painted in white with pale blue trim, in the style of the colonial Caribbean with fretwork trim. All rooms have king size beds, private balconies and en-suite bathrooms. They each have a ceiling fan, fridge, electric kettle and ample storage space. The furniture in all rooms is antique white rattan and blends well with the architecture of the building itself.
The rooms do not have televisions, direct dial telephones or air conditioning, though nights are generally cool, with trade wind breezes to keep the temperatures and humidity down. Further details on the hotel website.
Auberge Seraphine, Castries
Auberge Seraphine is a colonial villa style property located around Pointe Seraphine at the entrance to the main harbour of Castries.
The hotel itself overlooks Vigie Yacht Marina from where yachts and boats take out daytrippers, and is just next to a natural water feature providing a home for dozens of white egrets who come home to roost here every evening in the surrounding trees.
The twenty-four rooms are spacious and presented in a simple Caribbean style with white walls and floors, wicker beds and white embroidered bed covers. All are air-conditioned and come with cable TV and direct dial telephone. Further details on the hotel website.
