Day 1: Arrive in Kings Lynn

Arrive at your hotel, just outside of Kings Lynn.
Stay overnight at Knights Hill Hotel & Spa

Day 2: Kings Lynn to Old Hunstanton - 34km/21.5mi

After your briefing you'll set out on the quiet country lanes of Norfolk. Just before arriving in the first village of the day, Castle Rising, you'll pass the fortifications the village is named for. Continue on, along tree-lined avenues, through the Sandringham Estate, before cycling on country lanes through farmland and the villages of Shernborne and Fring on your way to the coast. Discover the lavendar fields at Heacham and then cycle along the promenade with the wide sandy beaches of the Wash beside you to your overnight stop at Old Hunstanton.
Breakfast included
Stay overnight at Le Strange Arms Hotel

Day 3: Old Hunstanton to East Rudham - 53km/33mi

Today your route follows gently undulating country lanes towards Burnham Market, a traditional North Norfolk village, with a detour on route to Titchwell Marsh Nature Reserve where you can spot bitterns, bearded tits and marsh harriers in the reedbeds. Pass Bircham windmill which looks much as it did 100 years ago and is one of the best remaining before continuing to your overnight stop in East Rudham.
Breakfast included
Stay overnight at The Crown Inn

Day 4: East Rudham to Holt - 50km/31mi

Heading back towards the Norfolk Coast AONB stop at Holkham Hall, an 18th Century Country House where you can visit the Hall before continuing through Holkham National Nature Reserve to the sea to enjoy a picnic on the beach at Wells. Follow the estuary along to Wells-next-the-Sea, a pretty harbour town. Cycling along gravel tracks and lanes reach the monastic ruins of Binham Priory. The Benedictine priory was founded in 1091, the nave of which, with its 13th century west front and Norman arches, is now the parish church. Continue to Holt, an historic Georgian market town where you will spend the next 3 nights.
Breakfast included
Stay overnight at The Lawns Hotel

Breakfast included
Stay overnight at The Lawns Hotel

Day 6: At Holt - 48km/30mi or 54km/34mi

A choice of routes again today, both routes take you to Aylsham from where you have the option of going on the Bure Valley steam railway to Wroxham where you can go on a boat trip of the Norfolk Broads.
Option 1 takes you via Mannington Hall, a moated medieval country house and the Blickling Estate, a National Trust property before returning from Aylsham along the Marriott's Way, which follows a disused railway line. Continuing back towards Holt visit the village of Heydon, a charming cul-de-sac village in a Conservation Area.
The second option takes you on the North Norfolk Railway steam train (payable locally) to Sheringham and over the 'Norfolk Alps' to the Blickling Estate and then follows the same route.
Breakfast included
Stay overnight at The Lawns Hotel

Day 7: From Holt to Kings Lynn 61km/38.5mi

Today you will cycle mainly on quiet country lanes, through a series of villages. Of note is Little Walsingham, which has a long history of religious pilgrimage. Reviews

Everyone who goes on a Headwater holiday will be emailed a link to our post-holiday questionnaire where they can give us an honest assessment of all aspects of their holiday - everything from how quickly we answer the phone to how clean the hotels were - plus an overall rating and comments about their holiday.

Any feedback collected is posted to our website, so that people can make an informed decision based on past experiences before heading off on holiday. We don’t edit the reviews, the only thing we do is proofread them and alter any typos, where necessary, to ensure they are easy to read for everyone. All reviews will be published (except in certain extreme circumstances), and a member of the Headwater team will respond to any constructive criticisms/comments under the reviews, at their discretion. So, for the real tales, twists and turns of our holidays, look no further than the reviews from our previous travellers.

Mr Ingram, 23/06/2022

The North Norfolk tour was a new area for us and was definitely worth doing. The scenery was varied and there was scope to visit a number of places of interest (e.g. Sandringham, Holkham) but booking in advance is necessary.

Mr Struthers, 31/05/2022

Excellent cycling in pretty north coast of Norfolk mostly along quiet country lanes . The 3 nights in Holt with suggested circular routes was particularly good . We recommend the steam train trip from Holt to Sheringham which had volunteers dressed up as train staff of old and was fun. Once at destination we cycled to Cromer which was a bit like a trip down memory lane to an old, seaside resort with a pier, albeit past its best now. Suggested stopoffs elsewhere en route were very good . The Hat shop in Burnham Market was a surprising highlight en route but we also enjoyed lunch at the windmill and of course a visit inside Sandringham and having morning coffee at holkham Hall. At Cley next the sea, it is worth going slightly east along the coast off the route to go to a cafe with viewing at the nature reserve and then cycling down a track to get right on to the beach

Mrs CREANEY, 26/10/2021

Great cycling route along the coast and inland through very pretty villages in Norfolk. Great hotels and very welcoming staff and very helpful at all times.

Mrs ORR, 17/10/2021

Cycling round the countryside and coast of North Norfolk. Bird reserves and stately homes and gardens en route.

Mrs WALTON, 28/09/2021

Really great experience but overpriced.

Dr MONTE, 16/09/2021

This was one of the best holidays we have ever had. Being able to cycle for long distances on quiet country roads in the UK has been a dream come true. The car drivers in Norfolk were certainly used to cyclists and both car drivers and farm workers were very considerate and we felt very safe. The Norfolk scenery was beautiful and the hotels well selected. The 09:30 baggage pickups for transportation to the next hotels was a very welcome and civilised time and we didn’t have to rush our breakfast before setting off for the day. Although everyone kept saying to us that Norfolk is flat, it would be prudent to be cognisant of the fact that there are rolling hills and the 1.5 rating is appropriately reflective of that.

Mr FRANCIES, 02/08/2021

Expensive but reliable

Ms HIRST, 28/07/2021

It was a wonderful tour with a true taste of the contrasts of Norfolk and we will definitely return. There's almost too much to see this is why we will happily return. All the accommodation and onsite restaurants were great and so were the bikes. I am used to a high standard from Headwater so now I expect lovely hotels and great food! Why choose another company when you know you'll get quality with Headwater?!

Mr DOW, 08/07/2021

We have enjoyed our two previous Headwater holidays very much. We thought this option in Norfolk lacked the local presence of dedicated H/W rep representatives. The standard of hotels was not as good as on previous trips and the wine options with dinner were limited and on occasions of fairly poor quality. We did have some issues with the electric bikes and felt this could have been handled better and the support meant some issues were unresolved unless we sorted it ourselves. The cost did not seem as good value as our trips to Piedmont and Burgundy. Perhaps when the UK presence is more established and COVID is not affected hotels quite so much things will improve. We were certainly not put off Headwater and did enjoy travelling the routes provided across some lovely countryside, towns and villages.

Headwater response:
Thank you Mr Dow for taking the time to talk to us on the telephone regarding your recent holiday experience. We shall pass on your feedback and additional comments to our locally appointed agent and support them in making improvements where necessary. We look forward to arranging a future holiday for you very soon.

Mrs MICHAEL, 05/07/2021

It was interesting to explore a part of the country we did not know. The countryside was very attractive, as were the villages we passed through, and fortunately there was only one day of rain and a few showers on our last day. This was the first time we had cycled from place to place and it was a good way to see more places than if we had stayed in one place. The hotels were mostly excellent , though in one of them we had to store the bikes outside overnight so they were rather damp in the morning. The local food was delicious and much appreciated and staff were all friendly and helpful.

Mr RAYNES, 18/06/2021

The notes on attractions on route we not comprehensive. Very little was said about the historic building passed (some really significant mediaeval churches for instance). We cycled past Holkam and Houghton on the days when they are closed. If the weather had been less good this would have been really annoying. The tea shop at Heydon (one of the Holt optional routes) is fabulous for scones. Also on the last day there are tea shops at Walsingham (the Read and Digest tea shops does great scones) but then no food till Sandringham

Headwater response:
Thank you for your feedback following your recent holiday, we have passed your comments on to our Programme Manager so we can look at ways in which our holiday literature can be improved. We are thankful for your suggestions of afternoon tea shops, very welcome and very much needed whilst out cycling.

Mrs WARDLE, 12/06/2021

Great cycling holiday. Very comfortable welcoming hotels in great locations. Lovely undulating routes on mainly quiet roads with varied views and lanscapes. Plenty of places to stop for coffee or something to eat. Possible to cycle less or extend as individuals wish. We loved it.

Headwater response:
Thank you for your review of our Norfolk cycling holiday, it was a pleasure to read that you had a great time with us. We look forward to welcoming you on many more trips with us in the future.
