Hotel Bergrose, Stobl

This a beautiful 30 room hotel based a 5 minute bike ride from the eastern shore of Lake Wolfgangsee on the outskirts of the village of Strobl.

It is a traditional building with wooden balconies and Gothic script on the exterior, and is located on a riverbank next to a meadow. It has a lovely secluded garden, and three floors of perfect Austrian wood panelled luxury inside.

Rooms here are suites with shower or bath, direct dial phones, satellite television (CNN and BBC), hairdryers. All the rooms are luxuriously decorated with quality pine furniture and comfortable beds.

Markus Sittikus, Salzburg

The 3 star Markus Sittikus is a beautifully presented hotel, based in an 18C building with a mustard façade located in a quiet side street not far from the Mirabell palace, just a 15 minute walk from the old city.

Inside the hotel the décor is attractive and individual, with bold colours like mustard yellow and red tartan in the comfortable bar area, and some colourful murals painted on the walls throughout the building. Public rooms have period furniture, and the upbeat interior; combined with the personal attention you receive from the friendly staff, make a stay here particularly memorable.

The hotel has 39 rooms though it feels smaller, with television (CNN/BBC), direct dial phones and hairdryers. Each one is individually decorated with attractive colour combinations and solid wooden furniture, in keeping with the age and status of the building.

It is also one of the few hotels in Salzburg to have a garden to relax in, if you are looking for some respite after doing the sights.

Hotel Amadeus, Salzburg

This 3 star, 24-room hotel is on Linzergasse -a partly pedestrian shopping street about 10 minutes walk from the old city. It is a beautiful historic building – an original town house now converted into charming hotel accommodation. It has a frescoed exterior and a typical wrought iron sign hanging outside. The lack of traffic combined with the thick walls means it is quiet, with only the bustle of shoppers and café goers in the street outside.

Bedrooms at the back look out onto a secluded graveyard, and the ones to the front overlook the street. They are beautifully presented with wrought iron beds, antiques and oil paintings, some of them with stripped wooden floors, which together give a stay here some real charm.

Modern amenities are not forgotten either - rooms come with CNN and BBC, direct dial telephones and hairdryers.

Hotel Wolf Dietrich, Salzburg

The 4 star Hotel Wolf Dietrich enjoys an excellent position at the end of Linzergasse, the most popular street on the modern side of the city. Technically, however, it is still in the old town, as the confines of the old city are seen to be the Mirabell Gardens, the 17C summer palace that once marked the end of Salzburg.

The rooms are all en-suite and each has satellite television, mini-bar, and direct dial telephone. Some look over the street and others look over the San Sebastian church, whose graveyard houses the Wolf Dietrich mausoleum, the Archbishop after whom the hotel is named. The hotel also has a small fitness centre including a sauna and small swimming pool.

Hotel NH Salzburg, Salzburg

The 4 star NH Salzburg is a modern hotel, located just a 10 minute walk from the center of the city. It is quite a substantial size with 140 bedrooms, and is a good option in Salzburg for its excellent location, perfect for both the historic sights in the old town and the shopping in the newer part of the city.

The traditional light stone exterior of the building gives way to a very modern interior, which is carried throughout the hotel with a spacious, light marbled lobby and café where snacks are served throughout the day on the ground floor in reception.

Bedrooms are smart and professionally presented either in burgundy and cream colours, or light pastels, and furniture is modern and of a very high standard. Each room has direct-dial telephone, satellite television, internet access, independent modem telephone line, mini-bar and hairdryer.
