THE HILLS OF SOUTHERN TUSCANY (FURTHER DETAILS)

General information:
This holiday is a upper 2 Boot level independent, hotel to hotel walking holiday.

Location:
This walk takes you on a journey through varied landscapes and gives you the chance to visit some of Italy’s finest and best-preserved hilltop towns and villages on the way. The southern part of Tuscany is a land of rolling hills, the Crete Senesi ridge and broad valleys; it is dominated by the thickly forested Monte Amiata, Tuscany’s only volcano.

The area was often disputed between the powers of Florence and Siena, and there are imposing fortresses perched on hilltops.

The hills and valleys are extensively farmed, with vineyards between San Quirico and Montepulciano. In May the fields are bright green with great red splashes of poppies. The fields turn golden in June, brown and textured from July, and then to rich autumn colours in September and October.

The countryside feels emptier and definitely less touristy than the ‘classic’ area of Tuscany between Siena and Florence.

Who would this holiday appeal to?
Those who enjoy wine, history and sightseeing on Stay Put Days. The holiday is suitable for children but especially older children because of the towns clients visit whilst walking and the scenery which older children would appreciate, aslo taking into consideration the level of the walking required.
