This is a 7-night independent walking holiday with the option each day to do either a 2 or 3 boot walk (easier/more challenging).
Our walks follow mountain paths through a spectacular landscape with breathtaking, panoramic views. You’ll pass through a network of lush green valleys; pretty flower-strewn meadows, pristine, pine-scented woodlands and traditional rural villages idyllically perched steep on the hillside.
The walks will take in a whole range of unique flora & fauna; wild flowers ranging from dramatic blue gentians, purple monkshood and golden-yellow globe-flowers to countless alpine gems that thrive in this area.
You’ll be able to spot marmots and deer foraging in the hillside whilst griffin & bearded vultures circle in thermals overhead, you may even spot a rare black woodpecker!
This holiday has both 2-boot and 3-boot options each day. A reasonable level of stamina is required as you move on most days (bags moved for you) and your walks take you from the valley floors to around 1500m. Walking boots are essential.
The “département” of the Hautes-Pyrénées is our base for the Heart of the Pyrenees Walk. It’s one of eight départements in the region of the Midi- Pyrénées, subdivided into 3 districts, with which there are 34 cantons and 474 communes.
You’ll start your holiday in Asté, a small rural village of less than 500 inhabitants, set on the river Adour in the foothills of the Pyrenees. It’s located 3½km from the much larger thermal spa town of Bagnères-de-Bigorre.
Then on to the busy little spa town of Barèges, located on the banks of the fast-flowing river Bastan - A traditional Pyrenean mountain village; nestled in an impressive, steep-sided valley and surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery. Bareges is right on the edge of the Neouvielle Nature reserve and the Pyrenees National Park
Finally, on to the delightful town of Luz St.Sauveur on the edge of the National Park. Luz is quite an animated little place with narrow lanes leading up to a fortified church. Close by is the Pic de Midi (2865m) with its observatory and breathtaking views of the chain of the Pyrenees.
Serious and reasonably fit walkers who are looking for a challenge. Walkers capable of 2 or 3 boot walking, people who who enjoy spectacular scenery and appreciate flora & fauna. Not suitable for children under 12.
