General information:
2-cycle level holiday, cycling along the traffic free strade bianche.
Quite a challenging 2 cycle holiday and steep in places. We would only recommend this holiday to children over 10 years old and who are used to cycling.
Location:
This is a wonderful way to explore the south-eastern corner of Tuscany and the Umbrian borderlands, the ‘magic triangle’ between Montepulciano, Castiglione del Lago, and Cortona, one of Italy’s most splendid ancient hilltop cities. The cycling is fairly easy (though there are hills), and is mostly along traffic-free strade bianche, smooth little unsurfaced roads.
The holiday combines wine interest (tasting at Montepulciano and elsewhere) with city visits, water sports on the lake, historical interest (including the ancient battlefield at Tuoro) and bird watching at the Lago di Montepulciano. All this is combined with great Italian food at comfortable hotels.
Who would this holiday appeal to?
Good for couples of all ages. For people who enjoy fine wine and history and people who like comfortable accomodation combined with excellent food and wine.
Similar to which other holidays?
We think this holiday is similar to our 'Secret Provence cycling' holiday.
Other details:
This region really does have it all: - medieval villages, hilltop towns, Renaissance churches and Roman remains.
Good for wine lovers.
Good swimming opportunities.
The views really are breath-taking, you can see the rolling Italian hill top villages wherever you cycle.
