This holiday is based on our Auxerre to Avallon Walk holiday. On this 'lite' version, in order that you have complete flexibility, we have left evening meals and travel arrangements to you. If, however, you wish for these to be included, it's no problem, we'll just apply the relevant supplements. We do not include bike hire either, as many people like to bring their own, however bike hire (with panniers) can also be arranged.
This is one of France’s best rambles, following the GR13 south. It starts in mediaeval Auxerre, one of the prettiest cities in France, with its narrow streets of half-timbered houses. Joan of Arc slept here (twice). You go on to stay in the fortified mediaeval town of Vézelay, from where St Bernard of Clairvaux launched the Second Crusade. You pass through the Côte de l’Auxerrois vineyards (with opportunities for wine tasting at Irancy), and cherry orchards with lovely views down across the Yonne. Then across hillsides crowned with
little woods and pretty riverside villages, including Arcy and St Moré (with onceinhabited caves).
In certain places, you can use the local train service to give extra flexibility. It allows you to shorten or lengthen the walks, and take in more on your rest days. We provide tickets on walking days, and timetables.
For more infomation about this holiday, including hotel descriptions, travel options and full holiday itinerary, please see our new 'further details' section.
The hotels and restaurants are fantastic.
