This relaxed cycling holiday explores the totally peaceful Jura
Wine Route - a network of mediaeval villages strung out
along the sunny, fertile lower slopes of the Jura mountain range.
The region boasts no less than six official vintages or appellation
controléewine producing towns, including Arbois and Château
Chalon, and there are plenty of excellent mountain hams and
cheeses to try along your way!
Each cycling day is varied, with routes winding through oak
forests, emerald vine terraces and along lazy rivers to discover
mediaeval hilltop villages, ancient abbeys and thundering
waterfalls. You can taste wine in Arbois’s ancient Château
Poulsard, explore the amazing Moidon Caves - 1000’s of
stalactites and stalagmites - and drink in the most incredible
valley views from Château Chalon’s feudal castle.
A warm welcome is guarenteed at all of the charming, family run
hotels that you stay in along the way. At Arbois, you stay in a
restored water mill that enjoys a stunning setting by a limestone
waterfall. In Passenans, you dine on the hotel terrace that
overlooks row up row of swaying vines. And at Poligny,
M Masson’s delightful hotel with its quaint galleried balconies
enjoys wonderful views over the surrounding countryside,
especially from its tempting pool. Dinners everywhere are a
celebration of the rich local cuisine. Expect to taste poulet aux
morilles(chicken stuffed with wild mushrooms) or truite au vin
jaune(trout cooked in the delicious local amber coloured wine).
