Gozo Activities

The small, stunning island of Gozo, surrounded by crystal-clear Mediterranean waters, sits just 5km from its bigger, livelier sister Malta, and takes you to a place where time stands still and life is lived at a much more sedate pace. Our unique blended walking and cycling holiday gives you the maximum opportunity to discover this charming island, where each village tries to outdo the next with the fabulous architecture of its churches and basilicas. Europe's third largest domed church can be found on the island, and ancient fortresses and temples are not in short supply either.

You explore the wonderfully wild coastal paths, with turquoise blue waters shimmering below and spectacular views over to Malta and Comino, with plenty of wildlifewatching possibilities. You'll visit the geographical features of the Azure Window and Fungus Rock and take a trip to the island's capital of Victoria too. Ancient salt pans lie like intricate puzzles along the coastline, and linking the traditional villages are quiet roads through vineyards and fields boasting an abundance of sweet-smelling flora.

You stay at two of the best hotels the island has to offer. The unique and secluded 5-star Ta' Cenc, with two enormous pools, where meals are usually served al fresco on the patio under a 200-year-old carob tree, and the luxurious 5-star Kempinski San Lawrenz which has several pools and one of the best spas in Europe - a true hideaway with large gardens, it's a wonderful place to relax and get away from it all.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive in Malta/Transfer to Gozo

Arrive at the exclusive 5-star Ta' Cenc hotel.

Day 2 - Raiders' Cove, Mgarr and Qala 9km/6mi/4hr or 16km/10mi/6hr (walk)

Today it's a wonderful walk following an old mule track to the coast, with great views of Malta, and on to the creek of Mgarr-ix-Xini (where Turkish raiders landed in 1551). It's a nice spot for dipping your toes in the sea! Continue along the coast for views of the Templar C18 Fort Chambray before reaching the town of Mgarr with its international harbour. As you leave Mgarr, heading past Barn Owl Rock and on to Hondoq Bay, you'll find great views of nearby Comino. A chance for more toe dipping before you head inland, passing the Chapel of Rocks and the Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception. Your final stretch takes you back to the coast and on to Qala Battery, and then the impressive village of Qala.

Day 3 - Xlendi Bay and Layercake Cliffs 9km/6mi/2.5hr or 10km/6.5mi/3hr (walk)

Today you head along Gozo's highest and most dramatic cliffs at Sannat; late spring here will see them bursting with Mediterranean Shearwaters. The views you get of Malta and Comino are stunning. You pass through wonderfully scented Tamarisk trees, on to Xlendi Bay. Then it's up, inland, through manicured terraces, with dark red poppies and row after row of cultivated gladioli.

Day 4 - Ta'Cenc to San Lawrenz 24km/15mi (cycle)

Leaving Ta' Cenc and Sannat behind head across the island passing into Xewkija - this small village has Europe's third largest domed church. Then it's along quiet roads and past vineyards before reaching the coast and the option of visiting Ramla Bay and Calypso's Cave. A long swoosh now takes you down to Marsalforn and its compact harbour where there are many bars and cafes, a perfect place for lunch. Leaving the harbour behind, pass the patchwork of salt pans and Wied il- Ghasri, a narrow inlet and gorge with a beautiful secluded bay. It's then past the Neo-Romanesque basilica at Ta' Pinu, before heading to the wonderfully luxurious Kempinski hotel.

Day 5 - The Azure Window and Inland Sea 10km/6.5mi/4hr (walk)

It's a stunning walk today taking in some of the most beautiful landscapes and features on the island. Heading down to the coast you soon get glimpses of the Inland Sea before you come to pass it, along with the picture-perfect Azure Window. From here you follow a coastal path alongside the south western point of the island with its rock formations and an ancient chapel built into the rock face. Continue inland to see the Roman freshwater ponds and the impressive caves of Ghajn Abdul, before heading back to the hotel for a cool drink.

Day 6 - Churches and the Capital 12km/7.5mi/3.5hr or 14km/9mi/4hr (walk)

Today's walk takes you through the village of Gharb with its stunning Baroque church, before heading to the north western tip of the island, passing the northern coast. Enjoy the awe-inspiring valley of Wied il-Ghasri then continue on with views of the patchwork salt pans, before heading inland through Ghasri, which boasts Gozo's oldest basilica. Carry on up to Victoria, the island's capital, with its famous old citadel, before returning to San Lawrenz via Ta' Pinu, the nation's shrine.

Day 7 - San Lawrenz to Sannat 15km/9.5mi, 19km /12mi or 23km/14.5mi (cycle)

There are a couple of options today: you can visit the UNESCO-listed Ggantija Temples at Xaghra, or spend time exploring the bustling capital of Victoria and the fantastic views over the island from the Citadel. You begin by heading north west past tomato fields, before reaching the wonderful cliff tops which rise dramatically from the gushing sea below. Chapels and basilicas line your route as you pass through pretty villages on your way to Victoria. It's a short ride to Xaghra from here and, after visiting the tombs, you can either follow your first day's route or return to Victoria, following easy roads that pass the villages of Munxar and Sannat, before continuing back to Hotel Ta' Cenc.

Day 8 - Leave Gozo

Hotel Ta Cenc was a massive disappointment and does not provide anywhere near the 5 star classification and is generally grubby with poor attendance and hospitality. Hotel Kempinski is more like the standard expected in hospitality, service facilities and efficiency as expected from a five star rating. We expected a quite island for cycling in Gozo but it really is quite and urban spread with some heavy traffic that are not appreciative of cyclists ad pedestrians. Our pick up driver to Gozo (a local) was rude drove very fast in roads that needed much more caution especially with cyclists, pedestrians and moreover children. Footpaths are not consistent hence the need for caution. It must have been one of our worst paid for private transfer!

A wonderful mix of relaxation and activity on the walking/ cycling holiday. Everything was well organised and we thought the hotel in Ta Cenc was fantastic. Gozo is definitely a place to go back to.

really nice holiday but the food at the Kempinski trattoria was really poor- all freezer to fryier type bought in concoctions with nothing on the menu that appeared to have been bought in fresh and we really struggled to choose anything we would wish to eat. On the other hand the cocktails there were excellent!

I love Headwater but his route was not good. Maybe the person putting the walks and cycles together did not have English as a first language? Gradients were misleading. For the fist time with Headwater we were lost every walk and cycle.\misleading instructions like 'at the open room' or' at the rock kernel' - whathatat does that mean?. A simple right or left would have helped! The map details George gave us were dates 2007 - las updated. Happy to help. Send us out again and we will re write for you so others can follow....just and idea.

The holiday was great and we would go back to Gozo. We did have some difficulties with the directions, they were not always as clear as they could be. We have been on walking holidays with Headwater before and have found the directions fairly easy to follow.

Wonderful weather, hotels and food. However, the route guides were occasionally confusing, which meant we could not relax as easily as we have on other holidays. It would be more helpful if the route guides gave clearer and precise instructions. Too often there was interesting but ultimately superfluous information. Additional descriptions could be in brackets. Breaking down the instructions and numbering them or bulleting them would also be clearer, rather than a paragraph of prose, mixing description with instructions. It would be useful to always have distances between decision points. Sometimes it was impossible to know if you had missed a significant building and were on the wrong track because it was difficult to know if it was just around the corner or half a mile away.

Ta Cenc was a lovely friendly hotel with good food. Beautiful situation. We had a Trullo room lovely. Kempinski was very proud of itself, tried a bit hard in some ways. The chef had left and we had 2 meals that were raw not medium cooked ( slow cooked duck and slow cooked lamb). The waiter told us that the kitchen staff were managing without him, we wondered!!

The only issue we had was with the vegetarin food selection at the Kempinski hotel. The selection for vegetarians was very poor, most of the resturnats were closed while we were there and the vegetarian selection in the open resturants was vey restricted. We found ourselves ordering food we didn't really like because it was the only vegetarin choice on the menu. Very disappointing. The food and staff at the Ta Cenc were fantastic though. We were treated better than the meat eaters. We could have anything of either the daily special menu or the a - la - carte menu and they offered to cook us anything we wanted if we told them in the morning what we fancied. There was no need to do this however as the food was the best I have ever had in any hotel I have stayed at.
