Carinthia Lakeside Activities

Worthersee is the largest lake in Carinthia, famous for its warm, turquoise waters - a dream for swimming and an enviable backdrop to a week of lakeside walking and cycling. You stay in Velden, the most cosmopolitan town on the lake and a popular haunt for Austria's rich and famous. Full of shops, bars and restaurants, Velden combines luxury and activity with effortless ease, offering relaxing ferry cruises and a variety of watersports so you can take things as slow or fast-paced as you wish.

On this seven-night, multi-activity holiday you have a wide selection of self-guided walking and cycling routes to choose from each day, at either 1 boot/1 bike or 2 boot/2 bike level. We've provided a sample itinerary on the next page, to give you a taste of the walks and bike rides available, but you have complete flexibility all week. We also provide you with complimentary use of a Headwater bike throughout your stay and a pass for the excellent Worthersee ferry service, so you can explore the lake's villages and towns at your leisure.

You'll stay at the family-run 4 Star Hotel Post, superbly located just a stone's throw from Velden's bustling centre. You're sure to receive a warm welcome at this charming hotel which offers comfortable, spacious rooms with balconies, a small sauna and a restaurant with large outdoor terrace and its own wood pizza oven, serving both Austrian and Carinthian specialities. The sister Seehotel Europa, just a 10-minute walk away, has a lovely lakeside beach where you can soak up the sun and enjoy the crystal-clear waters.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive in Velden

Arrive at your 4 Star hotel in Velden. There's time for a lakeside walk before dinner.

Day 2 - Cycle to Rosegg’s Castle, Labyrinth and Animal Park 18km/11.5mi

This cycle takes you out of Velden on marked cycle trails through woodland, passing pretty villages such as Bergl Emmersorf to meet the River Drau and the town of Rosegg, located at the mouth of the Rosental Valley. Visit Rosegg’s impressive castle complete with puzzling labyrinth and animal park, full of fascinating wildlife including American bison, ibex, lynx and rare deer species. Pay a visit to the mystical Keltenwelt Frög which traces 3000 years of Hallstatt culture and history then recross the River Drau and take a short climb before enjoying a freewheel back to Velden.

Day 3 - Walk along the southern shores 7km/4.5mi/2.5hr or 14km/9mi/5hr

Follow the lakeshore towards Cap Worth before climbing into rich and fragrant pine forest where a babbling stream lines your route. You’ll follow a mixture of trails through meadows, forests and tiny hamlets before reaching Trattnigteich, a small lake and a pretty spot to stop for a picnic and take in the beautiful birdsong and aromas of wild herbs and flowers. Head to one of the nearby ports - Dellach, Maria Wörth or Reifnitz – and make your way back, by boat, to Velden.

Day 4 - Cycling the Wernberg Castle Trail 24km/15mi

This cycle follows a circular route along quiet country roads, taking you past picture-postcard hamlets like Terlach and Damtschach and deep green meadows. You’ll pass Schloss Damtschach before a forest road lined with scented pine trees takes you down to Schloss Wernberg, an imposing castle dating back to the C13 and well worth a visit. Head back to the hotel on a marked cycle trail, against a spectacular backdrop of the Karawanken Mountains and the Rosental Valley’s gentle Alpine pastures and crystal-clear waters.

Day 5 - Pirker Kogel Circular Walk 11km/7mi/4hr

Take the ferry to the lakeside town of Krumpendorf. Passing through the town, you’ll pick up the Pirkerbach Streamlet, a natural gem which leads you uphill away from the lake. Pass the romantic church of St Ulrich before a short sharp climb takes you through shaded pines to the Pirker Kogel, a 666m-high peak and one of the highest and best viewing points above Wörthersee, offering panoramic views. Head back down to the lake, perhaps finishing with a trip to the lido for a relaxing swim.

Day 6 - Cycle around Lake Wörthersee 17km/11mi or 35km/22mi or 49km/31mi

On this cycle you’ll head clockwise around Wörthersee to Pörtschach, then through Krumpendorf and on to Klagenfurtsee. At this point you could take a relaxing boat ride back to Velden, or alternatively take time to explore the regional capital of Klagenfurt, following the landkanal into the town centre. You then have two choices; the shorter route takes you along narrow tracks, passing the beautiful lakeside village of Maria Wörth which sits on a peninsula on Wörthersee’s southern shore. The church of saints Primus and Felician stands on the peninsula’s highest point, with the Winterkirche beneath it - a major pilgrimage site and, due to its romantic setting, a popular wedding church! The longer route takes you on a scenic climb past Lake Rauschele and its ‘magic’ forest (you might glimpse wood spirits, witches, gnomes and tree hobgoblins!) It’s then onwards to the shores of Kuetschacher See and the pretty village of Sheifling, before a lovely downhill cycle brings you back to Wörthersee and Velden.

Day 7 - Forstsee Circular Walk 12km/7.5mi/3.5hr

Leaving Velden behind, your walk follows a path along the enthralling Romerschluct Gorge through fragrant pines to the shores of Forstsee. Follow a tranquil trail around the shores of the lake, perhaps taking a detour to the small, pretty forest chapel of Josefi. Then return along the gorge into Velden.

Day 8 - Leave Velden

Please note that cycling helmets are compulsory in Austria for all customers under 12 yrs. As we are unable to provide these, we strongly recommend that you bring your own.

Please see our Planning you holiday page for full details.
