Walking with Headwater

10 Good Reasons to put your best foot forward...

With the 2008 Olympic games due to start in just 2 weeks time, there's no better time to think about getting into shape. We all know that exercise is a good thing; however finding the time/motivation to get started can often be as much of a challenge as the activity itself!

But you don't have to be a gym-a-holic or potential 2012 Olympic athlete to enjoy and benefit from gentle exercise. Here are just a few reasons why you should put your best foot forward:

Walking in France

1. You'll be wealthier
Walking is free, so think of all the money you could save on fuel and parking. Think before you drive less than a mile, and remember walking boots are cheaper than tyres and will almost certainly last a lot longer!

2. You'll be helping reduce greenhouse emissions
By walking you are actively contributing to the fight against global warming. Keep up the good work!

3. You'll be healthier
Walking strengthens your heart, your bones and your muscles, and is an excellent cardiovascular exercise. It's a great way to get in the recommended 10,000 steps a day! A decent-paced 4-mile round trip five times a week will burn off an additional 2000 calories a week - but start slowly and build up gently.

4. You'll save time
It may sound silly, but in many busy towns, especially at peak times, it can be quicker to walk than to sit in slow moving traffic!

5. You'll feel better
If you're feeling "a bit down", then walking in the fresh air usually improves your mood and helps to lift your spirits. The combination of fresh air and sunshine can stimulate your circulation and take your mind off minor problems.

6. You'll increase your chances of living longer
Regular walking helps to reduce the risks of many serious health problems - such as osteoporosis, coronary heart disease and high blood pressure in old age.

7. You'll make new friends
Joining a local walking club can be a great way to get out of the house and meet like-minded people. It's sociable, fun and free!

8. You'll sleep better
Walking reduces tiredness and promotes better sleep. Go for a walk in your local park or woods, and you'll discover how nature can reduce stress. Just absorbing the different sights, scents and sounds around you relaxes your mind in a way few other activities ever can.

9. You'll be safe
Walking is one of the safest physical activities. There is very little risk of injury, and it doesn't hurt!

10. You'll be in control
You set the pace. You can do it anywhere at any time and you don't need any special equipment.
