Headwater cycling holidays have just become even more relaxing!
First introduced in the late 19th century, electric bikes have, over the years, often been portrayed as stylistically naff, cumbersome contraptions and just a step down from motorised zimmers or mobility scooters!
But, right across the globe things are changing, as e-bikes are losing their “potting shed” status and instead becoming the uber-chic, cool choice for lycra-shy, leisure cyclist: in China, sales have already topped 120 million; in Germany, sales have increased threefold in the past couple of years, with leading German car manufacturer, BMW, having launched their very own e-bike earlier this year; and, in european cycling capital, Holland, 1 in every 8 bikes sold is now electric, despite their being 3 times more expensive than a regular model.
Heawater’s Managing Director, Tina James, gives her view on the exploding electric bike market: “Electric bikes provide all the benefits of a normal bike – gentle exercise, fresh open air, no experience needed, interaction with nature and other cyclists – PLUS they have the added bonus of making light work of longer rides with the occasional climb and uphill section! They are great fun for competitive couple who want to race to the next hill village (but, as the power is capped at 25kph, there’s no real risk of losing control!) and they are the perfect solution for people wanting to share holiday experiences, but who don’t necessarily share the same levels of fitness. Having power assistance means guests will be able to comfortably cycle further too (if they so wish), meaning more places are within visiting distance, and we know people will be amazed at how easy they are to use.”
For summer 2013, Headwater are trialling electric bikes on 8 selected cycling holidays in Italy, Portugal, Austria and Switzerland, with supplements from just £50 per person for those wanting to upgrade to an electric bike for their trip. If the trial is a success, the company expects to roll out the initiative to include many more holidays in 2014.
