Walking in Gstaad

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

My colleague Clare and I were lucky enough to spend a couple of days walking in Gstaad
last week. Travelling by rail from Geneva is a very relaxing and pretty experience, passing first alongside Lake Geneva and then winding further up through little villages into the mountains - it really makes you look forward to the days ahead and walking through this scenery.

Our hotel is the Steigenberger, positioned on a hillside between Saanen and Gstaad with great views from the private balconies along the valley. The food at the hotel is a real treat, from sumptuous buffet breakfast to tempting afternoon tea and cakes, on to wonderful evening meals in either of the hotels two restaurants. Thankfully the hotel has a great swimming pool and wellness area if the walking is not enough to burn off all the extra calories!

The walks are varied either along the valley through pretty villages or using cable cars to get some height and walk along ridges with great views to some of the highest mountains in Europe.

My first taste of Italy

Monday, August 11th, 2008

Took me to Piedmont, which is a little known area tucked away in north-west Italy and is bordered by the Alps and the Monte Rosa.

I sampled the cycling and the walking- both graded at level 2, the routes were very well planned, capturing the best of what the area has to offer, in terms of the most stunning views and the areas you pass through.

Highlights for me were:

Visiting the Enotecas and the smaller, which offered tasting of the hugely popular wines from this region, namely the world famous Barolo, Barbaresco and the Nebbiolo as well as my personal favourite the Muscat d’asti.

Cycling trough lush green vineyards, which cover the boundless rolling hills, to reach tiny villages like Bra, Mango and Neive that are covered in bright flowers and that have never seen a buss full of tourists. Here we could enjoy a drink with the locals whilst practising our Italian!

Walking in the sunshine to our next hotel, with only the name and few details to hand, we didn’t really know what to expect, but EVERY hotel on both of these holidays was stunning. Many with swimming pools to enjoy a lazy afternoon reading our favourite book!

Sampling the many culinary delights the region has to offer, using the best of Italian and French cuisine the food here will not disappoint!

Finca El Cerrillo re-visited - July 08

Friday, August 8th, 2008

My first visit to the finca was in July 04 and I enjoyed it so much that I added a 3 night stay recently to my stay on the Costa’s.

We always receive such fantastic reports about the food and the hospitality that I knew it would be a brilliant start to my annual summer holiday.
Of course, at this time of year I didn’t anticipate doing any walking, except to the pool or the lovely al fresco terrace!

Just a 50 min drive from Malaga Airport and a drive up into the hills above Nerja, gives you endless views of white, hill top villages and glimpses of the coast.

For a short break in the heat of the summer the pool is delightful and just at the right temperature. Pool towels are provided and there are sunbeds on the pool terrace.

Since my last visit, the rooms have been expanded to offer 12 now, each very different to the other, all are en-suite and baths are offered, if preferred. The individual air-conditioning is a blessing at this time of year. For any sun-seeking guests there is a Moorish style courtyard, which acts as a suntrap.

As meals are offered on alternative evenings at this time of year, it gave us the excuse to leave the Finca to sample local restaurants, a 5 minute drive away. What we did notice was the better value for money for our meals and drinks up here away from the coast!

If you are looking for lazy days around the pool, with a fantastic library to borrow a few items of reading materials, and hosts who are very obliging, then look no further than Finca el Cerrillo.

Sampling Piedmont

Monday, July 14th, 2008

I’m really excited to be going on my first educational next week. Me and my colleague Melanie, are going to Piedmont, and I really cannot wait! We are flying in to Nice, then we will catch the train from Nice to Cuneo- this journey is supposed to be the most scenic route in Europe- so Im really looking forward to that!

We are going to sample a days cycling as well as a days walking, and we may even get chance to sample some of the local wines!

We will also spend a day with our rep, Annie, who will give us a taster for what’s involved in the day to day responsibilities of a headwater rep- which will be really good, because working in the office we don’t really get the chance to meet the reps very often.

I honestly cant say which part of our trip im most excited about, as the area looks so beautiful, the hotels all look really stunning too, and as for the food and wine, that is going to be a real treat! I think im going to have to cycle double speed to burn off the calories!

Ciao ciao

Viva España!- The follow up…

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Kerry and I had a wonderful time in Catalunya, and whilst I had visited the region before, it was a first for Kerry. We really got to know the area well with visits to all our hotels and a day of walking, followed by a day of cycling.

The walk we did on the Classic Catalan Walk was great, starting the day walking through some very interesting small walled towns with their lovely crafty shops and bars to stop and have a pause or lunch in, followed by an afternoon walking through the shade of a wonderfully scented pine forest.

Our cycle day really lived up to the holidays title - Contrasts of Catalunya - we started by the sea and cycled along the beach for a while, passing the Greco-Roman ruins at Empuries, on through the Aiguamolls Nature Reserve (perfect for anyone interested in bird watching), on through fields of sunflower to Castello d’Empuries where we had a lovely tapas lunch and then on through farmland to our hotel.

The hotels are a really good mix and there’s something there for everyone from seaside hotels, to luxury castles to friendly family-run farmhouses.

We also managed a night out in Calella de Palafrugell with our great rep, Ashley to celebrate Kerry’s 10th anniversary at Headwater.

Overall we had a wonderful, relaxing time and I know both Kerry and I will definitely being going back!

Its a hard life… Barb’s visits to Oz!

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Having “retired” to the beautiful Alpujarras, in Andalucia, after working for Headwater for several years, I was delighted to be invited back to promote the company to New Zealand and Australian agents and customers.

For the past four years, I’ve packed my bags in January and headed off, first to New Zealand and then Australia, to support our agent – Adventureworld – during their promotional road show. Although this entails a lot of hard work, it is a real pleasure to meet so many different people. The work is varied and includes travel exhibitions for the public, as well as presentations for agents, training sessions with Adventureworld staff and consumer nights. Each year I meet new people representing other tour operators, as well as catching up with regulars from Adventureworld, many of whom have become firm friends.

The tour of duty starts in New Zealand where I am privileged to have visited several towns and cities, favorites include Dunedin, with a dramatic coastline, in the south, pretty Hamilton in the north and the Bay of Plenty, which offers very good wine! Each day, here, we move to another city or town to spread the word to travel agents, help to impart knowledge to their customers and answer any queries they may have.

In Australia, starting in Sydney, the tour is geared around weekend travel exhibitions in all the major cities. Each city has it’s own Adventureworld representative, who has a program set up including breakfast seminars, office visits and evening presentations, sometimes there is even a bit of beach time thrown in!

In 2008 Adelaide had a session in the city volleyball courts and after the serious business, good fun was had by all, sorry to say Team Headwater did not win the cup, mainly due to my lack of agility on sand. I think the best evening is in Perth, which is always held at the Zoo, we usually manage to have a peek at the animals before the travel agents arrive and as it is our last event, we really make the most of our presentation time, the evening sometimes overrunning by an hour or so. It is a real farewell party, for old and new friends.

Amongst my favorite places in Australia are Hobart on Tasmania, for its beautiful surroundings, Melbourne for the culture and Queensland where I’ve seen Koalas in the wild.

March sees me back in sunny Spain, for a bit of R & R before the summer fiestas begin!!

Viva España!

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

I am absolutely thrilled to bits that I am going to be accompanying Charlotte Oldham our European Programme manager to Catalunya on an educational in July.

I cannot wait, well who wouldn’t be able to wait?…

The opportunity to escape the miserable British weather for sun, sea and sand in Spain is most appealing. Whilst I’m there I will be checking out our lovely hotels in Calella de Palafrugell, L’Escala, Baseia, La Bisbal and Begur, which all look simply gorgeous!

As well as visiting the hotels, I shall be walking and cycling a selection of our routes, so that I can really get to grips with what our Catalunya holidays have to offer!

We shall be travelling on Tuesday 01st July which can you believe is 10 years to the day that I began my career with Headwater - so this is a very special treat and a wonderful reward, I shall celebrate with Tapas and one or two Sangrias!

Classic Lot!

Friday, June 13th, 2008

Well it’s that time of year again when we are all looking forward to our summer holidays, which has also inspired me to think about holidays past, one of which I particularly enjoyed was spent in the Lot Valley, Southern France.

My family and I spent 10 nights in the region exploring all it has to offer from the cliff faced town of Rocamadour, the beautiful village of St Cirq-Lapopie, the fortified town of Villefranche, and the pretty areas surrounding Villeneuve….. not to mention the fantastic food and wines of the area!

It was certainly one of my favourite holidays to date, maybe I should be a little more energetic and re-visit the area on our Classic Lot Cycling holiday!

Tapas, wine and gentle walking…

Monday, June 9th, 2008

I travelled to Andalucia in April with my colleague, we spent 5 days on Headwaters ‘Highlights of Andalucia’ holiday and as a Spanish tapas and hill walking fan myself this was a real treat for me (another added bonus was that I was able to leave the cool English winter behind and head for the sun!)

The combination of gentle walking, visits to Moorish cities like Seville, Cordoba and Granada as well as the delicious food and wines were all just perfect!

I’ve always wanted to see the Alhambra and the Mezquita (in Cordoba) from when I
studied Spanish at A level (Im not telling you how long ago that was!) but I never did visit… So to finally have the opportunity to visit these places was for me, a real perk top my job!

The sunny weather, relaxed southern Spanish atmosphere, visits to beautiful Spanish cities and natural reserves as well as the fabulous food and wine meant I really didnt want to come home!

Chile really is a country of contrasts!

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

Well, I have just returned from my trip to Chile, and what n adventure it was!

The trip was organised by our agent n Chile and we visited lots of different parts of the country - it was great to get a real view of the different regions of Chile and even better because of the internal flights over the Andes!

Favourite parts of the trip for me were the visit to Santa Cruz and the vineyards and particularly the museum at the Santa Cruz hotel - an incredible private collection spanning all of Chilean history - you could spend a week there!

I also loved San Pedro de Atacama with its remarkable scenery - moon valley,
salt lakes and high altitude villages - the wildlife there is also spectacular with friendly llamas and bright pink flamingos.
