The local spirit is arak, flavoured with aniseed and served with ice and water. Wine and beer are quite easily available, which reflects the cosmopolitan nature of modern Jordanian society. However, most Jordanians prefer coffee, served strong and sweet, sometimes flavoured with cardomom, or tea flavoured with mint and also served extremely sweet. Offering tea or coffee to visitors is common, and it is considered polite to drink several small cups.
